No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Alabama Crimson Tide Offense 3 Things To Know

– The offense was amazing – scoring the second-most points in the history of the program – and it’s going to be fantastic again after averaging 511 yards and 47 points per game.

It’s only sins were that 1) it couldn’t outgun an LSU team that put together – possibly – the greatest season in the history of college football, 2) leaving Tua Tagovailoa in too long against Mississippi State, and 3) it couldn’t overcome a few bad throws against Auburn – 45 points weren’t quite enough.

Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian lost four players – Tua Tagovailoa, Jedrick Wills, Henry Ruggs, Jerry Jeudy – to the first 15 picks of the NFL Draft, but that’s just the cost of doing business for the Crimson Tide. What’s almost as important is who didn’t leave early.

RB Najee Harris, WR DeVonta Smith, and OT Alex Leatherwood would’ve all flirted with the first round, and almost certainly would’ve been taken in the top 50.

CFN in 60 Video: Alabama Crimson Tide Preview
[jwplayer XE96sYXz]

But the loss of Tagovailoa is the big one. It’s not like his early departure wasn’t expected, and it’s not 100% certain his injured hip would be completely and totally ready to roll for the season opener, but he was one of the all-time most efficient quarterbacks completing g 69% of his passes for 7,442 yards and 87 touchdown s with 11 picks, and averaging 10.9 yards per attempt.

He was pretty good.

Junior Mac Jones is the safe call to step in and run the attack. He’s the veteran who saw plenty of action in mop-up duty before stepping in when Tagovailoa went down for the year. He’s got the arm, can hit the deep ball, and can spread the ball around, throwing 14 touchdown passes with three interceptions – two of them, though, were killers against Auburn.

Taulia Tagovailoa transferred to Maryland, and there’s a reason – welcome to Bryce Young.

Remember when Alabama used to win big things with decent quarterback recruits? That went bye-bye with superstar talents Jalen Hurts, Tua, and now with Young, one of the 2020’s top national prospects. He’s only 6-0 and 190 pounds, but he can sling it, and he’s devastating in the open field. USC had him, and Bama stole him away.

What’s amazing about Alabama is how it lost Jeudy and Ruggs to the first round of the NFL Draft, and it still might have the nation’s best receiving corps. DeVonta Smith – forever famous for catching the 2018 national championship game-winner – returns after leading the team with 1,256 yards and 14 scores on 68 catches. He’s great, but do-it-all playmaker Jaylen Waddle – who averaged 17 yards per catch with six scores, and almost beat Auburn by himself – might be even more explosive.

Start with those two, hope for relatively untested talents like Slade Bolden and John Metchie to be ready for primetime, expect the excellent freshman to provide the depth, and look for tight ends Miller Forristall to and North Carolina transfer Carl Tucker to get plenty of work.

The receiving corps is great, but the running back situation is even stronger. The 1-2 punch of Najee Harris – who came up with a nationally underappreciated 1,224 yards and 13 touchdowns – and Brian Robinson Jr. was ready for the NFL before last year.

Landing star recruit Jace McClellan – pulling him away from Oklahoma – to go along with Trey Sanders and third-leading rusher Keilan Robinson is almost unfair.

Harris is the guy, but the rotation will be strong behind yet another great line. Alex Leatherwood continues to be an all-star at left tackle, Landon Dickerson is back at center, and as long as a right tackle emerges right away in place of Jedrick Wills, all will be fine.

Georgia vs Alabama Fearless Prediction, Game Preview, Preseason Version

Georgia vs Alabama early preseason fearless prediction and game preview.

Georgia vs Alabama early preseason fearless prediction and game preview.

How crazy is it to try predicting a college football game months in advance when 1) there wasn’t any spring ball, 2) there aren’t any real depth charts to go off of, 3) no one has ANY clue how to get sports going again, and 4) we don’t even know what the 2020 season is going to be?

Just crazy enough to potentially get some fantastic values on the early lines.

You can bet now at BetMGM on a whole lot of college football games – including going really insane looking at lines in November – with the possibility of hitting something big.

We’ll be diving in a whole lot deeper when we do this for real just before the season – crossing fingers that there is one. But for now …

Georgia vs Alabama Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why Georgia Will Win

The defensive front seven should be in place to hold up against the pounding that Alabama is going to try to apply.

Georgia might have lost a whole slew of parts to the NFL, but the defense was hardly gutted. A few good starters are done – including the starters on the front three – but there’s going to be a strong enough rotation to hold up against a Tide O that’s going to start out the season trying to flatten everyone.

The Bulldog secondary, though, will be the strength early on. It might have been hit for 230 passing yards or more in five of the last seven games last season, and it’ll give up its share of big plays to this wonderful Bama receiving corps, but it’s not going to get ripped up.

It’s going to be one of the nation’s best defenses after getting dates against Virginia and East Tennessee State to tune-up, but …

[vertical-gallery id=512537]

Why Alabama Will Win

Just how quickly will that Georgia O line come together?

It’s Georgia, so there’s more NFL talent about to rise up and produce, but four starters are gone from last year’s line, the backfield has to hope the new stars are ready for the massive game, and the passing attack that was game-managed throughout last season has to be ready to keep up if this gets into any sort of a shootout.

It might not have been a vintage Alabama killer D last year, but the youth movement should rise up early on against the still-emerging Dawg O.

Getting back LB Dylan Moses won’t hurt.

On the other side, the Tide offensive line is expected to return four starters to pave the way for Najee Harris and Brian Robinson when, arguably, the nation’s best receiving corps isn’t trying to hit the home run. Talent-wise, Georgia can matchup with Bama, but experience will matter.

What’s Going To Happen

Assuming it’s Jamie Newman taking over the Georgia quarterbacking job, will he be ready to be the best offensive player on the field? That’s what he might have to be to pull this off.

He’ll be good, but the offense won’t get enough out of the ground game to get by.

Be somewhat shocked if this isn’t a good defensive battle – at least for a little while. Bama will win with experience and home field playing big roles, but looking several months ahead – again, this will be done in far more detail once the time comes – that’s an awfully big early line considering how strong the Dawg D should be.

Georgia’s NFL talent will keep this close, and it should be a fantastic game in what might be the SEC Championship preview, but not having new-Indianapolis Colt kicker Rodrigo Blankenship will be a factor.

Alabama vs USC Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why USC Will Win

Exactly how much reworking does Alabama have to do?

It’s Alabama, so it’s going to have more talent than just about everyone else no matter what, but it still has to hope that Mac Jones is ready at quarterback. Or Bryce Young. Or Taulia Tagovailoa. And the secondary that had its down moments last year – relative for the Crimson Tide – has to replace four of the five normal starters.

Can Kedon Slovis and the high-powered, up-tempo USC passing game find a groove right away?

The only way this works is if the veteran Trojans are sharper out of the gate. They’ve got the experience on both sides of the ball, and they’ve got the weapons to keep up if this turns into a track meet.

Why Alabama Will Win

Pound, pound, and pound some more.

What do you do with a team full of new – but talented – starters? You make it easy by grinding out drives behind the offensive line full of NFL prospects that gets back four starters.

The Bama defense might be welcoming in a whole slew of new parts, but the offensive side should be just fine. Mac Jones has enough experience to be okay, the receiving corps lost Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs and might still be the best in college football, and RB Najee Harris appears to be ready for a massive year.

The USC run defense has good players to work around, and the 2019 stats are fine, but when teams tried to run – like Notre Dame and Utah – they didn’t have much of an issue.

What’s Going To Happen

The Trojans will be surprisingly sharp.

This isn’t going 2016 when they – okay, enough time has passed to go here – all but quit in the 52-6 loss to Bama when they managed just 194 yards of total offense.

Slovis and the passing game will be effective enough to come up with a few scoring drives, but the power of the Bama lines will make the difference in the second half.

The 2014 33-23 win over West Virginia was the last time the Tide won a regular season opener by fewer than 17 points.

The last time they won a regular season opener by fewer than double-digits? 2006 over Hawaii 25-17. The last time they lost a regular season opener? 2001 over UCLA.

The Tide will win, and they’ll score late to make it look better, but USC will provide a surprising push.

NFL Draft 2020: SEC

It’s borderline obnoxious, but hardly unexpected.

As much as fans of other college football conferences might want to argue and complain, yeah, the SEC is usually just better.

And why? This isn’t hard. The league has better players than everyone else.

The SEC has owned the recruiting rankings by 85 miles ever since the beginning of the internet, and it comes across year after year in the NFL Draft.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

Last year, nine SEC players were selected in the first round. Granted it was still 28% of the first 32 picks, but it was still a tad light for the league that handed over ten of its finest players in the 2018 first round, and 12 in 2017.

But is it even possible to for a conference to own half of a first round by accounting for 16 picks?

11 SEC players were selected in 2014 first round, 12 got the call in 2013, and let’s just cheat a little bit and give a little boost to the league in 2011, considering Missouri and Texas A&M were making the move from the Big 12 to the SEC. With the newcomers added, the current SEC programs accounted for the first seven picks of the 2011 NFL Draft and 13 of the first 32.

It took a big bend of the criteria and the SEC still wasn’t even close to getting up to 16 first round picks.

By the way, the BetMGM line for total SEC players drafted in the first round is set at a ridiculous 15.5.

Is it even possible? Helped by Alabama and LSU, yeah.

LSU QB Joe Burrow, Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa, Bama receivers Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs, fellow Tide star OT Jedrick Wills, Auburn DT Derrick Brown, Florida CB CJ Henderson, Georgia OT Andrew Thomas, LSU edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson. That gets you to nine.

South Carolina DT Javon Kinlaw will go in the first round, as will LSU LB Patrick Queen. That’s 11, and a long, long, long way to go to get to 16 and the over.

There are others like LSU WR Justin Jefferson and Alabama S Xavier McKinney, who both have a shot of going in the top 32. There’s a chance RB D’Andre Swift and OT Isaiah Wilson from Georgia are both going early, and DE Terrell Lewis and CB Trevon Diggs from Alabama also could get the Day One call.

It’s not entirely insane to make a call that more than half of your 2020 NFL Draft first round will be made up of SEC players.

Let’s try this a different way.

[lawrence-related id=434326]

How Many SEC Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

How many players outside of the SEC are guaranteed to go in the first round?

Rapid-fire – Chase Young, Jeff Okudah, Isaiah Simmons, Justin Herbert, Tristan Wirfs, Mekhi Becton, CeeDee Lamb, Kenneth Murray, Jordan Love, AJ Terrell. That’s ten, and then it’s all hit-or-miss from a pool of around 15 players who could slide into the top 32.

But SEC players are in that same bucket of first round tweeners.

How crazy do you want to get? Is this really going to be one of the most historic drafts ever in a chest-puffing moment for the It Just Means More league?

Yeah. There are more than enough SEC players to get to 16, and that’s where the value is – minimal as it is.

NFL Draft 2020: Alabama

Three Crimson Tide players were selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, four were selected on Day One in 2018, and four were picked in 2017.

Indianapolis Colt center Ryan Kelly was the only Bama player taken in the 2016 first round, Amari Cooper was the only first rounder in 2015, and just two were gone early in 2014.

In fact, the last time more than five Alabama players were selected in the first round was …

Never.

And the last time Alabama had more than four players selected in the first round of an NFL Draft was …

Never.

But the over/under line on the total number of Alabama players drafted in the first round is a whopping 5.5.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

So can the Crimson Tide obliterate its own record for the number of players picked early, and do it from a team that didn’t even make it into the College Football Playoff last season?

Yeah. It’s possible.

Start with the sure things. QB Tua Tagovailoa, OT Jedrick Wills, WR Jerry Jeudy, and WR Henry Ruggs are all certain to go in the top 20, if not top 15.

But that’s just four, and you need two more to hit the over on the 5.5.

Safety Xavier McKinney is a wee bit of a wild-card. He should be a top 25 pick, but that’s hardly a sure thing with the safeties likely to slip this year. But  realistically, McKinney is a first rounder, and there’s five, and there’s Bama’s record-setting first round.

It’ll take one more to hit the over.

Trevon Diggs, come on down.

The talented corner is a mid-second round prospect who could sneak into the end of the first round with a little bit of luck, but that’s a massive call. Defensive end/edge rusher Terrell Lewis is the only other Bama player who’ll be within sniffing distance of Round One, but … nah.

So …

How Many Alabama Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

Five.

McKinney will make it five in the first round, and you’ll have to hold your breath on Diggs. Lewis won’t go in the top 32, but Diggs could go anywhere from 30 to 45.

The value might not be there on the under, but there isn’t enough upside to roll the dice on the over.

We’ll keep on doing what we do whether or not there’s a season, but all thoughts go out to those suffering and struggling, and to all the health care workers battling above and beyond the call. Please … stay safe.

If there’s a College Football Playoff, who’s going to be in the thing?

There’s nothing fluky about a College Football Playoff national championship. Maybe you can get there with a relatively light schedule and a few big breaks – Utah and Baylor almost did it last year – but if it was so easy, a whole lot of others would be able to do it.

After six years, we sort of know how this all goes.

1. Go unbeaten and win your Power Five conference championship, and you’re in. It would take a historic anomaly – like all five conference champs going 13-0 – to miss out.

2. Go 12-1 with a Power Five conference championship, and realistically, you’re in. 2018 Ohio State is the first and only one to be left out.

3. Be an 11-1 powerhouse Power Five team that lost one tough battle, and  you have a chance. You need help, but you can get there like 2016 Ohio State and 2017 Alabama.

Other than that, be Notre Dame and go 12-0 – and get a little help – and it can be done. The Group of Five programs, though, have yet to crack the code, and there has yet to be a two-loss team in the CFP.

With all that in mind, if we’re able to get a season this year, here are five possible College Football Playoff scenarios.

CFN in 60: 5 Possible College Football Playoff Scenarios
[jwplayer 78Nlb02I]

5. College Football Playoff Scenario: The Chalk

Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma

There are two ways to look at this.

Either you have powerhouse fatigue and you’re bored of seeing the same teams over and over again – even LSU didn’t seem all that new, considering it was the SEC Champion – or you’re geeked out that these four programs are killers and should make for a strong tournament.

Could Oklahoma finally get over the hump and get into the national championship? Is it possible for Alabama to win a third one of these after not getting it done the last two seasons?

Will Clemson be able to come through with a third national title in five years, or could Ohio State get back to the CFP national championship in its fourth trip in seven playoffs?

Even if it’s not these four exact teams, if it’s any SEC champion, maybe a big-time Big Ten champ, and even a second SEC team in to go along with Clemson, it would be a whole lot of fun.

We’ll go into the problem if it’s anything other than a four-team powerhouse chalk CFP in a moment, but first …

With no spring football, the battles for the starting quarterback jobs are going to be more interesting than ever.

Whenever there’s college football again, it’s going to be a mad dash to figure out who’s ready to step up and shine at the most important position. Throw in the transfer portal and grad transfer aspect of this, and this list can and will change around wildly over the next several months.

Which Power Five quarterback situations are the most interesting? Here we go, starting with …

ACC: Duke Blue Devils

The Blue Devils went from Daniel Jones under center, to Quentin Harris, and the results were sensational …

For a while.

Harris was a dominant passing force over the first four games of the season, but the offense stalled as the year went on, and he finished with just 16 touchdown passes with 11 interceptions after throwing ten scoring throws in the first four games.

Harris is gone, and the heir apparent should be Chris Katrenick, the No. 2 guy last year who only completed 3-of-13 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown with a pick. He’s a 6-3, 215-pound passer with the upside to shine as David Cutcliffe’s quarterback, but it’s going to be a fight.

6-3, 190-pound redshirt freshman Gunnar Holmberg is an elite athlete, but who can do a little bit of everything, but he’s coming off a knee injury. Once practices kick in, his mobility will be a big part of the puzzle.

And then there’s the wild card. Clemson transfer Chase Brice.

The guy who saved the day two years ago for the Tigers in the win over Syracuse wasn’t going to see the light of day again as long as Trevor Lawrence could stay in one piece, but he’s looking to fill the void at Duke, take the gig, and potentially be a statistical star under Cutcliffe.

They were among the best players in college football in 2019, but they either flew a bit under the radar or they didn’t become household names. That’s about to change.

The perfect player who fits the description was on last year’s list. Oklahoma State RB Chuba Hubbard is back, but he’s an established superstar. These five are on the verge of being there.

5. QB Sam Howell, Soph. North Carolina

He’s not all that big, and he’s not all that mobile, and he doesn’t have the biggest arm, but as a true freshman, he showed it.

Originally a key part of Willie Taggart’s 2019 Florida State recruiting class, Mack Brown and company swooped in and flipped Howell to be the main man to run the North Carolina offense. In a rebuilding job, the hope was for the true freshman to be ready right away, and then let him work through his mistakes as the team matured and the talent started to come in.

Instead, Howell came out rocking, bombing away for 245 yards and two touchdowns in the season-opening win over South Carolina, and hitting Miami for 274 yards and two scores with no picks in either one.

The Tar Heels won both games, and the season was off and running.

There were a string of losses the middle of the season, but Howell handled himself like a seasoned pro in close game after close game.

There were a few multi-interception games – the two in the loss to Appalachian State were a problem – but he only threw seven picks on the season and had two or more touchdown passes in every game.

He needs to be more consistent, he took a few too many chances, and there were too many misfires in key moments, but for a true freshman to hit 61% of his passes for 3,641 yards and 38 touchdowns with just seven interceptions in his first year, he wasn’t bad.
