2020 Preseason CFN MAC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Jaret Patterson, Jr. Buffalo

It’s not just Patterson.

Give junior Kevin Marks a little credit – a lot of credit, actually – for being more than just a No. 2 guy in the Buffalo offense with close to 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns over the last two seasons. Great in the rotation, he’s able to keep Patterson fresh.

The MAC is loaded with terrific backs this year, but the 5-9, 195-pound Patterson is the star of the bunch coming off a 1,799-yard, 19-touchdown season. He’ll catch a little bit, but one of the toughest pound-for-pound runners in college football – he carried the ball 181 times over the final six games with 15 touchdowns – is there to take over the offense and make it his.

2020 Preseason CFN MAC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Treshaun Hayward, Sr. Western Michigan

The guy found his stride after being an okay backup in his first two seasons.

The 6-1, 225-pounder turned into the best player on a solid Western Michigan defense, coming u with 142 tackles with 4.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss as he seemed to get in on every play.

Consistently great, he came up with ten tackles or more in nine games including an 18-stop performance against Eastern Michigan, and he turned into a rock in the open field.

Watch out for teammate Ali Fayad to be in the mix for the MAC Defensive Player of the Year with his pass rushing ability, but Hayward should be in for a special season again.

– The offense just didn’t work in any way. The Zips were last in the nation in scoring, last in the nation in total offense, and last in the nation in third down conversions. They were able to score 20 points or more just three times, they never scored more than 30, and they were held to seven points or fewer seven times. The attack will continue to try moving with more of a tempo, but it has to find one thing that works. Fortunately …

– Experience isn’t a problem. QB Kato Nelson is back along with seven other starters. The team went young, suffered through a whole slew of major growing pains, and now the O has to start moving despite losing three starters. It starts with the ground game that was dead last in the country, averaging just 48 yards per game. Both offensive tackles are gone, and losing guard Brandon Council to Auburn is a killer. There’s not a lot of size, but there’s enough experience to work around.

– The skill parts need more time to work, but they also have to connect. Junior Brandon Lee led the team with just 179 rushing yards for an attack that ran for a grand total of two scores. There”s depth at running back, though, and the ten top pass catchers are back. Now it’s up to Nelson to run it all in his fourth year with the team. He’s mobile enough to get by, but he has to be more accurate and consistent.

Well that didn’t go so well.

25 college football head coaches are going into their second seasons at the helm, and now is where the production is supposed to start to kick in.

There’s usually a reason as head coach is taking over a program, and most of the time it’s because the last guy got canned. So there’s a grace period because of all the work there is to do, but there’s usually not enough of one.

Even so, Year Two is when the turnarounds are supposed to come. Unfortunately, unlike our piece last season on the 5 Instant Impact New Head Coaches – which turned out to be close to the pin – the 5 Year Two Coaches Who’ll Be Much, Much Better really, really didn’t work.

And why?

Chad Morris at Arkansas … oops. Willie Taggart at Florida State … dropped too soon, but fired. And it goes on from there, so this time around these five have to be right.

Which five got through a slew of first year problems and are about to blow up?

The five coaches about to make the biggest instant impact in their second seasons are …

5. Tom Arth, Akron

There’s nowhere to go but up.

Win one game, and it’s already going to be an improved season. Win three, and it’ll be a huge step forward. Go bowling, and Tom Arth is your coach of the year.

Akron was easily the worst team in college football last season.

It was the only team that failed to win a game. It was dead last in the nation in total offense, couldn’t generate a lick of production on the defensive front, and it got worse as the year went on scoring six points or fewer in five of the last seven games.

But to give Arth a little bit of credit, he had plenty of work to do after taking over a team team that closed out 2018 on a five-game losing streak.

The 38-year-old worked his way through D-III John Carroll – his alma mater, which he took to three D-III playoff appearances – before taking on the Chattanooga gig. He went 9-13 with the Mocs, but that was enough to get him the Akron job.

So what are things possibly going to be better in Year Two? Experience has to count for something.

With the season slipping away, Akron went young to get the time logged in. Now, if all goes according to plan, ten starters will be back on O, six should return on D, and there’s hope to get off to a hot start with Youngstown State, New Mexico State, Clemson …

Starting 2-0 is a possibility, with home games against UMass and Bowling Green to potentially crank up a few wins.

0-12 to 4-8?

5-7: The Zips beat Youngstown State to quickly get up off the mat after a winless 2019. With a win at New Mexico State, there’s a lot to start to have fun with. There aren’t a slew of big wins, but they’re able to get by UMass and Bowling Green at home, and pull off one other stunner to at least flirt with a six-win season.

1-11: Akron loses to Youngstown State. That sets off the panic siren that the misery  of last year will keep on going. It’s not going to be so bad that it goes winless again, but it loses everything on the road and only splits the dates with UMass and Bowling Green.

Ohio is now in get-to-a-bowl mode.

Head coach Frank Solich became the winningest head coach in MAC history in a 66-24 destruction of Bowling Green last week. That might have come in a disappointing year when the Bobcats were supposed to be in the mix for the MAC title, but it was still a great performance by a team that needed to win its last two games to get to six wins and bowl eligibility.

And here comes needed win No. 2.

Akron shockingly pushed a Miami University team that didn’t need to play last week. The RedHawks won the East and they’re playing for the MAC title, but they still won 20-17 against a Zip team that’s been the worst in college football in an 0-11 season.

This is Akron’s bowl.

It’s a home game with a chance to royally ruin Ohio’s year. No trip. No swag bag. No nothing but a loss to this awful tam that hasn’t managed more than 17 points in any of the last six games.

Ohio will have this without a problem.

The running game that rumbled all over Bowling Green for 342 yards will be at it again – the Bobcats have rushed for close to 1,300 yards and 18 scores in their last five games – against a miserable Zip defensive front.

Akron is dead last in the nation in total offense, dead last in turnover margin, and dead last in rushing behind an offensive line that’s dead last in fewest sacks allowed.

It’ll all be on display as Ohio gets bowl eligible.
