Steelers survive Ravens despite anemic offensive performance

The Pittsburgh Steelers failed to score a touchdown, relying solely on kicker Chris Boswell to outscore the Baltimore Ravens.

Despite a lackluster offensive showing, the Pittsburgh Steelers narrowly defeated the Baltimore Ravens 18-16. The Steelers failed to score a touchdown, relying solely on kicker Chris Boswell, who delivered six field goals, including a decisive 50-yarder late in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Russell Wilson completed 23 of 36 passes for 205 yards but never seemed on his game. Wilson couldn’t find the end zone except to throw a critical interception, stalling a promising drive. The Steelers’ ground game was equally ineffective, with running back Najee Harris managing only 32 yards on seven carries — his least productive game since Week 4 at Indianapolis.

Pittsburgh’s offense struggled on third downs, converting just one of nine attempts in the first half, and failed to capitalize on red zone opportunities, going 0-for-4.

The defense compensated for the offensive shortcomings by forcing three turnovers, including a pivotal fourth-quarter interception by rookie linebacker Payton Wilson.

The Steelers’ defensive resilience and Boswell’s clutch performance proved crucial in securing the win.

The victory allowed Pittsburgh to maintain its lead in the AFC North, but the offensive inefficiencies highlighted the need for significant improvements to sustain success for a tough seven-game stretch to close out the season.

Still, the Steelers extend their win streak to five games after defeating two legit playoff contenders in the Ravens and Washington Commanders.

Justin Tucker struggles again in Steelers’ win over Ravens

A Pittsburgh Steelers game ball should be given to Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker

A Pittsburgh Steelers game ball should be given to Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker, who missed two field goals that could’ve meant the difference in the game for the loathed visitors.

In a pivotal Week 11 matchup, Pittsburgh edged out Baltimore 18-16, largely because of the contrasting performances of the teams’ kickers. Chris Boswell was flawless for the Steelers, converting all six field goal attempts, including a crucial 50-yarder late in the fourth quarter. Baltimore’s Justin Tucker, renowned for his accuracy, missed two first-quarter field goals from 47 and 50 yards. These misses proved costly in a game decided by a mere two points.

Tucker’s struggles in this game are characteristic of his subpar season. Entering this week, he had a field goal conversion rate of 79%, placing him seventh-worst among kickers with at least 10 attempts — a notable decline for a player who holds the NFL record for career field goal accuracy at 89.7%.

The Steelers’ offense was anemic and couldn’t get a rhythm going. They got lucky that Tucker was off his game and Boswell saved the day.

Chris Boswell carries Steelers to huge win over Ravens

Chris Boswell continues to be the most consistent scoring threat on the Steelers team.

Go ahead and announce Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Chris Boswell the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. On a day when the Steelers offense sputtered, Boswell carried the scoring going six-for-six on his field goals to beat the Baltimore Ravens 18-16.

The win was the first division win of the season for the Steelers and the team improved to 8-2 on the season. This is especially important given quarterback Russell Wilson had a dreadful outing and was pulled in the vital closing moments in favor of Justin Fields. Fields athleticism helped close things out when Wilson could not.

On defense, the Steelers continue to have Lamar Jackson’s number. Jackson only threw for 206 yards and rushed for 46 more. Pittsburgh also kept the league’s leading rusher, Derrick Henry bottled up. Henry finished with only 65 yards rushing and was a non-factor for much of the game.

The Steelers now have to turn around on a short week and take on the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night on the road.

George Pickens seemingly mocks injured Ravens’ defender

George Pickens is under scrutiny again for seemingly mocking an injured Ravens player during the Steelers’ Week 11 clash against Baltimore.

George Pickens just can’t seem to keep his immature antics out of the spotlight, as he displayed another poor example of decision-making in the Steelers’ Week 11 contest against the Ravens.

Around the halfway point of the second quarter, Ravens DT Travis Jones, who was nursing an ankle injury heading into the contest, went down to the turf clutching his leg. While Jones was surrounded by concerned teammates, Pickens seemingly began to mock the Ravens’ injured player.

It is difficult to make out exactly what Pickens was saying to the Baltimore Ravens defenders; however, fans can infer from his body language that he was not there to check on the injured player, and was intent on trash talking the Baltimore defense.

Jones would ultimately limp off to the blue medical tent and was quickly cleared to return to the Week 11 contest. While the bad blood between the two AFC North rivals was obvious throughout the game, it never bodes well for one’s public perception to openly trash talk an injured player, let alone in the exact moment of injury.

Puzzling calls/execution hampers Steelers offense early

The Steelers offense was stuck in neutral in the first quarter against the Ravens.

The Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t even gotten out of the first quarter against the Baltimore Ravens and the Steelers offense already has some questionable calls and head scratchers.

First up was the decision by quarterback Russell Wilson to take a shot deep on third and short that ended up bouncing off the shoulder of wide receiver Calvin Austin III. The issue with this play is twofold. First, if you are going to take a shot downfield on third down, you have to take that shot to your best guy. That means George Pickens and not Austin.

Bigger still is that if you are going to take a low-percentage shot like that, you’d better do it knowing you will go for it on fourth down if you don’t get it.

Then, later in the quarter, the Steelers had another third and short and instead of throwing deep, Pittsburgh went with a more traditional quarterback sneak. But the offense completely teleghraphed the call, Wilson messed up the push as the snap and running back Jaylen Warren just stood in the backfield and offered zero push. The offense then came back and went for it on fourth down with an even more telegraphed run that ultimately failed.

Thankfully, two missed field goals by Baltimore kicker Justin Tucker and one made field goal by Chris Boswell and the Steelers hold a slim 3-0 lead.

Steelers injury updates: RB Jaylen Warren expected to play vs Ravens

Jaylen Warren is listed as questionable but expected to play vs the Ravens.

Despite being unable to practice much at all this past week, Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren could play on Sunday versus the Baltimore Ravens. This is according to ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter.

Warren appeared on the practice report on Thursday with a back injury that forced him to miss practice on Thursday and was limited on Friday. This is in addition to starting running back Najee Harris who dealt with an ankle injury all week but has no injury designation for this week’s game.

The Steelers are averaging 138.3 rushing yards per game. This is good enough for No. 8 in the league. The run game has taken off since Russell Wilson took over the starting quarterback job.

Did Cam Heyward discover the fountain of youth?

Cam Heyward’s elite 2024 play has been pivotal for the Steelers’ defense, proving age is just a number for the veteran DT.

Cam Heyward has either perfected time travel, discovered the fountain of youth, or is doing his greatest Benjamin Button impersonation in 2024, as the Steelers’ DT continues to turn back the clock with his elite play at 35 years old.

With an impressive five sacks, 14 QB hits, six tackles for loss, and a whopping 31 QB pressures, PFF considers Heyward the best defensive lineman of 2024 so far.

Throughout Heyward’s illustrious 14-year career, the Steelers’ DT has accumulated 85.5 sacks, 127 TFLs, 193 QB hits, and eight forced fumbles.

Heyward’s play in 2024 has been a pivotal factor in not only the team’s fourth-ranked defense against the run but also the overall success of the 7-2 Pittsburgh Steelers.

While teammate T.J. Watt is considered a favorite for the Defensive Player of the Year award, Heyward is looking more and more like a dark horse candidate with each passing week.

Heyward will face a tough challenge in Week 11 as he and the Steelers take on the 7-3 Baltimore Ravens on November 17th at 1:00 PM EST.

How Pitt-Clemson game could impact Steelers’ Week 11 field conditions

Subpar field conditions may impact the Steelers’ Week 11 matchup against the Ravens, adding uncertainty to this AFC North rivalry.

As if there couldn’t be more uncertainty surrounding the 7-2 Steelers’ matchup against the formidable 7-3 Ravens, subpar field conditions at Acrisure Stadium may add an additional layer of intrigue to the meeting between these AFC North rivals.

Less than 24 hours before the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Baltimore Ravens in Week 11, the Pittsburgh Panthers hosted the Clemson Tigers in an ACC CFB matchup at Acrisure.

While fans of the Steel City are treated to watching their city’s CFB and NFL teams play this weekend, the Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t as fortunate.

When the Pittsburgh Panthers have played at Acrisure just before the Steelers, the field conditions from the game have significantly deteriorated.

One of the most recent examples was in 2022 when the Panthers hosted Georgia Tech on October 1. Weather conditions and the worn-down field made the Steelers’ Week 4 playing conditions against the New York Jets less than ideal, ultimately costing Pittsburgh the game, 24-20.

Could a similar issue present itself in Week 11? Fans would be disappointed if poor field conditions cost the Steelers a chance at furthering their lead in the AFC North divisional race over the Ravens.

Steelers CB downgraded to OUT vs Ravens

The Steelers had hoped to get Cory Trice back this week but he will not play vs the Ravens.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had hoped they would have the services of second-year cornerback Cory Trice Jr. on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. But his return will have to wait at least one more week as he has been downgraded to OUT for this week’s game.

Fortunately, with Cameron Sutton back off of his suspension, Trice has some time to get well. However, with his 21-day window a week old, he could find himself out of time to be back on the roster if he isn’t 100 percent. Pittsburgh selected Trice in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL draft but was lost of the year after a promising rookie offseason
