2024 NFL draft: Updated Carolina Panthers draft needs

The Panthers have to get help for quarterback Bryce Young in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Carolina Panthers find themselves in a tough spot this season. After trading up to draft quarterback Bryce Young and now they find themselves as one of the worst teams in the NFL and don’t have a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Carolina is going to have to be smart in free agency as well as the draft if they want to take some real strides next season after investing so heavily in the guy who might not have been the best or even fourth-best quarterback in the last draft.

Saints make an unconventional pick in this 2024 NFL mock draft

The Saints made an odd pick in this 2024 mock draft. Alabama’s Dallas Turner is a talented pass rusher, but he needs to get his weight up get on their radar:

It’s no secret that the New Orleans Saints pass rush needs to step up. They’re going into Week 10 tied for the fourth-fewest sacks around the league (17) and ranking tenth-worst in pressure rate (19.7% at Pro Football Reference). Carl Granderson is a productive rusher, but Cameron Jordan is past his prime, and the Saints haven’t gotten much out of backups Tanoh Kpassagnon and Isaiah Foskey with Payton Turner on the mend.

So it’s no surprise that the latest 2024 mock draft has the Saints picking a dynamic young pass rusher. Pro Football Focus analyst Trevor Sikkema has the Saints going with Alabama edge rusher Dallas Turner at No. 19 overall, who would add a lot of juice for New Orleans up front:

“It feels like it’s going to be a trench pick for the Saints this offseason, whether that’s the offensive or defensive line. With a lot of the top offensive tackles already off the board, Turner is a good value pick here for New Orleans. He is more of an outside linebacker type of edge player and is having a career year as a pass-rusher for the Crimson Tide, sporting a 17.3% pass-rush win percentage. Turner has always displayed good explosiveness, but he is flashing added strength this season, too.”

Turner’s talents aren’t in question. It’s whether his playmaking ability could convince the Saints to break from their established prototypes at defensive end. Turner weighed in at 6-foot-4 and 242 pounds for spring camp this year, up a couple of pounds from his playing weight last season. And that doesn’t compare favorably to the players Allen has picked in his stops with the Saints, Raiders, and Broncos.

That’s almost ten pounds lighter than Khalil Mack (6-foot-2.5, 251) was coming out of college; Von Miller was a little heavier (6-foot-2.5, 246), too. That was a decade ago and these days Allen has a preference for heavier players out on the edge. Barring a sudden change, he’ll continue to stick to it. Look at the listed weights on the Saints’ website roster:

  • Tanoh Kpassagnon: 6-foot-7, 289 pounds
  • Cameron Jordan: 6-foot-4, 287 pounds
  • Kyle Phillips: 6-foot-4, 277 pounds
  • Payton Turner: 6-foot-6, 270 pounds
  • Jordan Willis: 6-foot-4, 270 pounds
  • Niko Lalos: 6-foot-5, 269 pounds
  • Isaiah Foskey: 6-foot-5, 265 pounds
  • Carl Granderson: 6-foot-5, 261 pounds

These listed weights aren’t all accurate (Granderson, for example, bulked up to 285 pounds for training camp last year) but the point is that Turner would need to put on at least 20 pounds to even get on the field for the Saints — at least in the role he’s best at, rushing against left tackles off the edge.

If the Saints did draft Turner he’d likely be stuck in the same role as Zack Baun. Another accomplished pass rusher coming out of college, the Saints converted the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Baun to an off-ball linebacker role where he’s dropping into coverage on 55.2% of his snaps on passing downs. For comparison, Turner is playing in coverage on just 25.7% of passing plays this season, an uptick from the 22.2% he experienced earlier in his career. Maybe his college coaches are preparing him for the kind of assignments he would see from NFL coaches like Allen.

Still, it’s frustrating to see a skilled pass rusher coming up from the college ranks and projected to go off the board when the Saints are expected to be on the clock while knowing they wouldn’t play him to his strengths — if they’d even consider drafting him. Turner’s proven production as a pass rusher and high-end athleticism will likely put him on their radar, but if the team is still running Allen’s defensive scheme, it’s tough to see Turner fitting into it.

2024 NFL draft: Giants go quarterback in most early mocks

It’s officially mock draft season for the New York Giants and most 2024 NFL draft projections have them selecting a quarterback, but not all.

Following a 30-6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9, the New York Giants dropped to 2-7 on the season and lost quarterback Daniel Jones (knee) for the year.

Although unofficial, the latest defeat essentially propels the Giants into draft mode. General manager Joe Schoen is personally scouting some of the nation’s top quarterbacks and what remains of the regular season is basically moot.

The decade-plus of misery continues in East Rutherford.

So here on November 7, just a week removed from Halloween, we’re already looking ahead to mock drafts — most of which have the Giants selecting a quarterback, but not all.

2024 NFL draft: Giants currently slated to pick 4th

If the season were to end today (and we know, it doesn’t), the New York Giants would select fourth overall in the 2024 NFL draft.

Following Sunday’s embarrassing loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, the New York Giants dropped to 2-7 on the season.

If the season ended today, the Giants would pick fourth overall in the 2024 NFL draft, per Tankathon.

The Arizona Cardinals (first overall) and Chicago Bears (second and third overall) would pick ahead of them. The Bears own the second overall pick from a previous trade with the Carolina Panthers.

Expectations that the Giants to explore options at quarterback in the draft will surely amplify following the season-ending injury to Daniel Jones.

General manager Joe Schoen was in attendance at the USC-Washington matchup this weekend with two top quarterback prospects, Caleb Williams and Michael Penix, on display.

Although quarterback is the likely scenario, they could instead target Ohio State wideout Marvin Harrison Jr., an expected generational talent at his position — something the Giants have lacked since trading Odell Beckham Jr.

With nine weeks remaining, there’s plenty to be determined in terms of draft position.

Giants fans will keep a close eye on the teams with worse records for the remainder of the season, including this Thursday’s matchup between the Bears and Panthers.

The Giants’ Week 12 matchup against the New England Patriots could end up being a big game for draft positioning as well.

Athletes can cry too

Caleb Williams gets criticized for crying after a tough loss but he deserve better treatment

There has been a ton of noise over last Saturday’s game between USC and Washington, and one would think it’s because we saw a legendary duel between two future first round draft picks in Caleb Williams and Michael Penix Jr., but that did not end up being the case.

After a hard fought and quite frankly exhausting performance by Caleb Williams and this USC offense that saw the game come down to the wire, Washington was eventually able to run down the Trojan defense and claim victory from the grasps of the Heisman hopeful. In the moments following this defeat camera panned to Williams heading to the stands and leaping into the arms of mother and sobbing.

There has been much made over this action, quite frankly too much. Opinions have flown from all levels of professional and social media weighing in on how this affects Williams’ ability to be a ‘leader of men’ or how franchises should evaluate this moment as ‘too emotional’. It is a sobering reminder that too often we see these athletes as less than human and certainly less than the young adults they are playing the game they love. It is no secret that, win or lose, Williams wears his emotions on his sleeves; he clearly loves the game of football to a perceived fault. To punish this young man in the draft room or in the media seems almost cruel to a person who left his heart and soul on the field that Saturday.

This dehumanization of athletes happens far too often, and this is just the latest example of it. Whether the false ideals of hyper-masculinity or the projected perception of what an athlete should be is to blame seems irrelevant at this point. We should embrace the highs and lows of the competitive nature of the figures we love to watch on Saturday and Sunday and let them exist in their highs and lows just like each of us. These athletes at the end of the day are just like you and me, and whether we admit it or not, couldn’t we all use a big hug from one of our parents?

Giants’ Joe Schoen personally scouted Caleb Williams, Michael Penix on Saturday

New York Giants GM Joe Schoen and several other shot callers from the organization personally scouted USC-Washington over the weekend.

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen was among a large contingent who attended the USC-Washington game on Saturday.

Schoen was flanked by assistant general manager Brandon Brown and director of player personnel Tim McDonnell as they got an up close and personal look at two of the nation’s top quarterbacks — Caleb Williams and Michael Penix.

Both Williams and Penix put on quite the show, too.

In a 52-42 Washington victory, Penix completed 22 of his 30 passes for 256 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Williams completed 27 of his 35 passes for 312 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and one fumble in a losing effort.

With the Giants likely headed for a top pick in the 2024 NFL draft, it makes sense that Schoen & Co. would want a good look at the top available quarterbacks — even after signing Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million deal.

The Giants dropped to 2-7 on the season following a 30-6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9, and Jones appears to have suffered a season-ending torn ACL, putting his future very much in doubt.

In addition to Washington-USC, the Giants also had scouts at the following games:

2024 NFL draft: Updated Buffalo Bills draft needs

The Bills can use help at all levels on defense.

When you think of the Buffalo Bills, you think of quarterback Josh Allen. Although he struggles with consistency at times, he has become a star in the league in part because of his ability to elevate the play of those around him.

Looking ahead to the 2024 NFL draft, the Bills must continue to build around Allen and make his life easier. This means not only getting him more weapons but dedicating a lot of resources to all three levels on defense. Here are our updated Bills draft needs.

Texans go first-round edge again in CBS Sports mock draft

The Houston Texans take Florida State DE Jared Verse in the latest CBS Sports 2024 mock draft.

The Houston Texans don’t have glaring roster needs — at least not compared to last year when they were 1-6-1 following Week 9. Entering the 2024 offseason will have Houston putting the finishing touches on a roster that should be competitive by that ensuing autumn.

According to Chris Trapasso from CBS Sports, the Texans use their first-round pick in his latest mock draft to take Florida State defensive end Jared Verse.

Verse is too good for the Texans to pass on here. Fun edge-rushing duo with him and Will Anderson Jr. for the long-term future.

Selecting Verse would be an interesting choice at No. 22 overall. What the selection would signal is the Texans allowed defensive end Jonathan Greenard to get away in free agency. However, the club may not be sold on the progress of fourth-round defensive end Dylan Horton and undrafted free agent Ali Gaye.

Going with a defensive end at that point in the offseason also indicates the Texans shored up the linebackers and secondary in free agency. Other picks on the board include Penn State cornerback Kalen King, Clemson linebacker Barrett Carter, and Miami safety Kamren Kinchens.

Greenard has blossomed in his contract season. The former 2020 third-rounder has generated 6.0 sacks, eight tackles for loss, and 10 quarterback hits for the Texans through seven starts. Houston would have to weigh allowing certain production that Greenard provides against the unsure proposition a rookie could bring.
