Arizona Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wildcats miss from the Pac-12 slate?

The Wildcats keep all of the same teams on the slate from what was the Pac-12 South, They catch a bad break missing Cal, but not having to play Oregon obviously matters. The divisions are gone, but getting Washington and Oregon State to come to Tucson is a plus.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Arizona Football Schedule What Really Matters

Last year the Wildcats had to deal with San Diego State and North Dakota State – both very, very dangerous – along with Mississippi State.

They came through just fine with good wins over the Aztecs and Bison, but they lost at home in a good battle with the Bulldogs. Expect 2-1 again with Northern Arizona and UTEP to go along with the trip to Mississippi State.

There’s a rough stretch of three road games in four weeks, but that’s followed by a week off. The team only leaves Arizona once – for Colorado – from October 14th on.

Arizona Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not a bad schedule for a program looking to take a big step forward.

Of the five Pac-12 road games, going to Stanford, Colorado, and Arizona State are all more than manageable. If the Cats can improve a bit, beating Washington State is a possibility, too.

The schedule is decent enough to get to at least six wins and a bowl game. It’s going to take an upset somewhere, but Washington, UCLA, Utah, and Oregon State all have to make the trip to the desert.

If all goes well, this shouldn’t come down to the date with Arizona State to get bowl eligible.

Iowa State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cyclones miss from the Big 12 slate?

There are a whole lot of positives to this schedule, including in Big 12 play, but there isn’t much of a break in who the Cyclones miss.

On the plus side, Texas Tech is going to be dangerous, and it’s not on the slate. However, all things considered, you’d rather play the American Athletic Conference guys than the normal Big 12ers. There’s no Houston – that’s not great – and there’s no UCF. You’d like to have West Virginia on your Big 12 schedule, too, but it’s not there.

Iowa State Football Schedule What Really Matters

There are two ways to look at how this Iowa State schedule works. There aren’t two home games in a row after the opening two weeks of the season, so there’s no real chance to settle into a groove. On the plus side, there aren’t two road games in a row.

The other negative is the six road games – one of them Ohio from the MAC – with five Big 12 away dates to deal with.

Iowa State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

The Big 12 is going to be tough from top to bottom, but at least Iowa State gets Oklahoma State TCU, and Texas at home.

Going to Kansas State to play the defending Big 12 champs to end the season is rough, and going to BYU won’t be a peach, but there are enough manageable games to bounce back from 2022 and go bowling.

Houston Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cougars miss from the Big 12 slate?

It’s sort of an interesting call for the Big 12 newbie.

Houston doesn’t miss any of the Texas teams.

Texas, TCU, Texas Tech, Baylor – they’re all there. It also gets to keep its date with its former American Athletic Conference brothers, going to UCF and hosting Cincinnati. However, there’s no BYU to deal with.

There’s bit of a downside here, especially with the geographical aspect to how the schedule plays out. Not facing Oklahoma and BYU is great, but not playing Iowa State – it has to prove it can bounce back after last year – and missing Kansas – even the improved version – isn’t great.

However …

Houston Football Schedule What Really Matters

No, really. Houston is all about Texas, Texas, Texas – the state as well as the program.

Yes, Texas is a big place, but it’s still part of the overall branding puzzle that three of the road games are at Baylor, Texas Tech, and out of conference – but in the same city – as Rice. Throw in home dates against UTSA and Sam Houston, and ten of the 12 games are against teams from Texas or home games.

To take this even further, the first game outside of Texas isn’t until October 28th at Kansas State. The only other date outside the borders is at UCF to close out the regular season.

Houston Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Can Houston put together the team to match the promising schedule?

Getting TCU, Texas, and Oklahoma State at home is a massive help, there isn’t a run of three road games in four weeks like others have to deal with, and there isn’t anyone on the slate the team can’t handle – really, UTSA is the toughest non-conference game?

With that said, just because there are so many big games in Texas, and even with all of those home games, it doesn’t mean the Cougars are about to rip through 2023 considering how much the team struggled in 2022.

Cincinnati Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Bearcats miss from the Big 12 slate?

The Bearcats gets a nice welcome present as they enter into Big 12 life.

Not having to play Texas is a sweet deal, and this year, not getting Texas Tech on the schedule is a huge plus. If that wasn’t nice enough, they don’t have to play either team from the 2022 Big 12 Championship – there’s no Kansas State or TCU.

It’s not all perfect with a run of three road games in four weeks in the second half of the Big 12 season, but …

Cincinnati Football Schedule What Really Matters

Considering all the changes for the program and the coaching staff as the new era begins, Cincinnati should be able to ease into the schedule.

Going to Pitt isn’t easy, but at least that’s relatively close. Three of the first for games are at home, and there are just two road games before the end of October.

The Bearcats get Oklahoma and UCF at home, playing Houston at Houston is just like life in the old American Athletic Conference dates, and going to West Virginia isn’t all that awful.

Cincinnati Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Yeah, Cincinnati is jumping up in weight class, but all things considered there’s not a whole lot to complain about.

There isn’t a true week off in the loaded and balanced Big 12 – outside of the actual week off before playing Iowa State, of course – but the home games are all manageable, there isn’t a road game that’s a no-chance loss, and there are enough winnable dates to assume at least seven wins.

As long as the Bearcats can own home, it should be a terrific season with this schedule.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

BYU Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cougars miss from the Big 12 slate?

The Cougars don’t get to play with enough of the new guys.

They get most of the old school Big 12 experience, and they’ll get Oklahoma and Texas before those two are off to the SEC (maybe), but they don’t have to deal with Houston or UCF. They do, however, host Cincinnati in late September.

They also don’t have to play Baylor or Kansas State – that’s not a horrible thing to miss the defending Big 12 Champion. Not helping the cause are the road dates at TCU and Oklahoma State, but …

BYU Football Schedule What Really Matters

There are a whole lot of road games packed into this.

Starting out the season against Sam Houston and Southern Utah helps – those aren’t scrimmages, but they’re easy ways to gear up for the season. And then it’s on with six of the last ten games away from Provo.

Unlike a slew of other Big 12 teams, the Cougars have to deal with three road games in four weeks, and two of them are at TCU and Texas. To make this worse, they have back-to-back road games twice.

Going to Arkansas isn’t going to help, but it’ll season the team up before diving into the new conference life.

BYU Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

BYU will never be an easy out, but in this 14-team Big 12 season there are too many road games and too many landmines. it’s going to be a fight to get to the conference title game without having a whole slew of breaks.

There shouldn’t be any issues getting to six wins, and two of the road games are against Kansas and West Virginia, but it’ll take something special to get into a groove with no more than two home games in a row.

NFL Mock Draft: Top 23 Order and Picks Post 2023 Wild Card

Mock drafts are always a work in progress, and this year it’s going to be even more fluid than 2022.

Seriously, who had Travon Walker going No. 1 overall last year at this time?

I did my first published NFL mock draft for the college paper in 1989. Ever since nailing the first two picks – Troy Aikman to Dallas and Tony Mandarich to Green Bay, and totally whiffing everything else – I’ve had one unwavering belief I’ve never strayed from.

Never, ever, ever project a trade, and totally ignore any and every mock draft that does. You can’t make a trade happen, or even accurately project one without totally screwing up the rest of the order.

So why this pretentious ramble before getting to the fun? The Chicago Bears are going to trade the first overall pick.

They have to, and if they don’t it’s all-time draft malpractice with a combination of 1s, 2s, and 4s – along with a delightful array of meats and cheeses – there for the taking from some desperate team that needs one of the amazing quarterback prospects in this draft.

Until the Bears actually make the trade, I’m still playing this straight.

Kentucky QB Will Levis will – probably – be the first overall pick, but no, Chicago isn’t taking a quarterback and it’s not trading away Justin Fields. So for now, here’s the first NFL Mock Draft of the silly season.

The next one will be done after the Divisional Round.

National Signing Day – early version – 2022. 25 Players You Should Know

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews

National Signing Day and college football recruiting have become Blockbuster in a streaming world, so it’s okay if you’re not constantly hitting refresh hoping beyond reason that your school’s NIL deal is strong enough to pry away a talented teenager from someone else’s offer.

However, Signing Day – the early version – is still a big deal when it comes to the top prospects.

Either 1) most of the 25 players on this list will be the foundation of their respective schools for the next two years before they turn pro, and/or 2) several will transfer, and/or 3) a slew of them will be just okay and won’t live up to the hype.

No matter how they all pan out, these are the names who’ll be a part of your college football life – and possibly the NFL, too – for several years.

25. Brandon Inniss

Position: Wide Receiver
Committed: Ohio State
What He’s A Big Deal: Oklahoma was close getting him, but Ohio State closed this summer. The Florida native has the skills to be the next great Buckeye receiver.

24. Reuben Owens

Position: Running Back
Committed: Texas A&M
What He’s A Big Deal: A speedster who fits the Texas A&M style, he was going to Louisville … and then he wasn’t. He’s got the talent to be an instant factor.

23. Cedric Baxter

Position: Running Back
Committed: Texas
What He’s A Big Deal: Originally he was thinking about Florida State, but the big banger of a back from Florida changed his mind and chose Austin over Florida and Texas A&M.

22. Hykeem Williams

Position: Wide Receiver
Committed: Florida State
What He’s A Big Deal: Alabama, Georgia, and Miami all made the full court press, and Pitt was on the radar, but the big target might be the star of the FSU class.

21. Justice Haynes

Position: Running Back
Committed: Alabama
What He’s A Big Deal: The shifty all-around back got away from Georgia and should quickly be a big part of the rotation at Bama.

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

20. Nicholaus Iamaleava

Position: Quarterback
Committed: Tennessee
What He’s A Big Deal: Josh Heupel got him early in the process, and now the spotlight is on. The Vols are already strong with quarterback options, but the 6-6 size and arm are enough to be in the fight right away.

19. Jurrion Dickey

Position: Wide Receiver
Committed: Oregon
What He’s A Big Deal: Very big, very physical, and very, very fast, he’s got No. 1 target talent who might be the offensive standout in a loaded Duck class.

18. Samson Okunlola

Position: Offensive Tackle
Committed: Miami
What He’s A Big Deal: Mario Cristobal is rebuilding the program on the offensive front, and he was able to get the 6-4, 300-pounder away from Alabama to potentially be the anchor.

17. James Smith

Position: Defensive Tackle
Committed: Alabama
What He’s A Big Deal: It was a fight to get him. The 6-3, 300-pound ultra-quick interior defender perfectly fits what Alabama does. All the other big-name SEC schools thought so, too.

16. Peyton Bowen

Position: Safety
Committed: Oklahoma
What He’s A Big Deal: He was going to Oregon, and then flipped late to Oklahoma … that was all after originally appearing to be a lock for Notre Dame. He still needs to add some bulk, but he’s going to be all over the field in a free safety way.

15. Damon Wilson

Position: Edge Rusher
Committed: Georgia
What He’s A Big Deal: Ready right out of the gate, he might be the best pass rusher in the 2023 recruiting class. He’s versatile, but the Dawgs are going to bring him off the edge.

14. Makai Lemon

Position: Wide Receiver/Cornerback
Committed: USC
What He’s A Big Deal: If you liked what the USC wide receivers did this year, get ready for more with Lemon – with more of a physical element. He might be too dangerous as a receiver to move to defense.

13. Peter Woods

Position: Defensive Tackle
Committed: Clemson
What He’s A Big Deal: Yet another great Clemson defensive tackle, he’s versatile enough to play just about anywhere on Dabo Swinney’s front. He might not be a massive anchor, but he can move.

12. Keon Keeley

Position: Edge Rusher
Committed: Alabama
What He’s A Big Deal: The Florida native was in the mix for Notre Dame and Ohio State, but he might just be the next Will Anderson for the Tide defensive front.

CFN Experts Picks CFP, NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

11.Jaquavious Russaw

Position: Linebacker
Committed: Alabama
What He’s A Big Deal: You want to talk about fitting the Alabama mold at linebacker, he already has the size with the guided-missile toughness to eventually be the team’s leading tackler.

10. Kadyn Proctor

Position: Offensive Tackle
Committed: Alabama
What He’s A Big Deal: Really, really big, he’ll be around 320 pounds on his 6-6 frame to work at either tackle spot for the Tide. It might take a year to get there, but he’s an all-conference caliber starter somewhere on the front five.

9. David Hicks

Position: Defensive Tackle
Committed: Texas A&M
What He’s A Big Deal: Texas A&M knows defensive tackles, and it just got a great one away from Oklahoma. He’s big with the quickness to live behind the line.

8Dante Moore

Position: Quarterback
Committed: UCLA
What He’s A Big Deal: He was off to Oregon, Bo Nix decided to stick around for another year, Moore switched to the Bruins late in the game. He’s a pro style passer with next level skills.

7. Caleb Downs

Position: Safety
Committed: Alabama
What He’s A Big Deal: Just like some of the other top parts in the loaded class, Nick Saban got a guy who fits the Bama type. Very physical and very fast, he’s not huge, but he hits.

6. Jackson Arnold

Position: Quarterback
Committed: Oklahoma
What He’s A Big Deal: He’s not all that big, but he’s quick, has a good arm, and he works with what the Oklahoma offense does. Think Dillon Gabriel with more running.

5. Francis Mauigoa

Position: Offensive Tackle
Committed: Miami
What He’s A Big Deal: Samson Okunlola might turn into one of the main men of the Miami class for Mario Cristobal’s offensive line at tackle, but Mauigoa has the bigger upside as a massive mauler who can move. The NFL look and skills are all there.

4. Zachariah Branch

Position: Wide Receiver
Committed: USC
What He’s A Big Deal: Really, really, really fast, here’s the deep threat explosive star for the passing game. Makai Lemon is the physical prospect for the receiving corps, Branch should be the playmaker.

3. Cormani McClain

Position: Cornerback
Committed: Miami
What He’s A Big Deal: He needs to add a little weight, but he’s got the range and talent to potentially work just about anywhere in the Hurricane secondary. He’ll end up being the team’s top corner.

2. Malachi Nelson

Position: Quarterback
Committed: USC
What He’s A Big Deal: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that Arch Manning guy is the big name in the process, but Nelson is every bit the star prospect. He’s got arm and accuracy to be USC’s next statistical superstar.

1. Arch Manning

Position: Quarterback
Committed: Texas
What He’s A Big Deal: He’s got the game to go along with the last name. Talent-wise he’s as strong a quarterback prospect as any since Trevor Lawrence. Having the family tutoring takes his upside to another live.

2023 Heisman Candidates: Early Top Ten Watch List

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

Sure you had Caleb Williams on the short list of 2022 Heisman candidates last year at this time, but it wasn’t a done deal he was going to USC.

CJ Stroud and even Stetson Bennett weren’t tough to call, but Max Duggan?

Two years ago no one would’ve put Kenny Pickett on any Heisman list after a 13 touchdown season. In 2000, who thought a wide receiver – even one as good as DeVonta Smith – would win over one of the tremendous quarterback prospects?

Don’t even start with Joe Burrow.

And then there’s the truly crazy part about the 2022 race when it comes to basing any future Heisman predictions on talent. Bryce Young, Michael Penix Jr., Hendon Hooker, and Will Levis – and throw in Anthony Richardson – are all potential top ten overall draft picks, and none of them got to New York this year.

This is always tough to do because of all the stars coming out of the blue. This year it’s almost impossible, and it’s mainly because of the transfer portal.

Just assume a few of the guys on this list will be on a different team by the time it all starts, and a few others will end up being on here after they find a new home.

Who’s going to be Deion’s quarterback running Kent State’s FlashFast style of offense at Colorado?

Really, who’s going to be the quarterback at Ohio State? Alabama? Texas? Who’s going to bomb away for a gajillion yards, and who’s going to rise up out of nowhere and go full Duggan on the season.

Just assume that if you don’t see your guy here – CJ Stroud, Bryce Young, Bijan Robinson, Spencer Rattler, Cam Rising – that’s because he’s a mortal lock to leave early for the NFL. If needed, we’ll add those and other stars to the list on the fly.

The goal is getting the early 2023 Heisman call close to the pin – last year we did got two of the four finalists – but there will be some massive misses to go along with easy base hits.

Remember, this isn’t a list of the best players. The Heisman is a popularity contest. It’s about who has the big, splashy moments in the big, splashy games for the big, splashy teams.

2023 Heisman Candidates Watch List: Just In Case

The first ten are the Johnny Manziel/Cam Newton//Joe Burrow/DeVonta Smith honorary list of fliers, just in case one of them rises up and becomes amazing.

20. The Field

There are a whole slew of cop-outs on this list, and it starts with a big one. It’s never a bad call if the betting world gives you The Field.

Again, Duggan, DeVonta, Burrow, Manziel, Lamar, Cam – you never know who’s going to rise up and be a big Heisman thing. It’s guaranteed that at least two players who’ll be deep in the 2023 Heisman race aren’t currently on this list.

19. Brock Bowers, TE Georgia

He’s a tight end, so of course he’s not going to win. He could be a finalist, though, if everything aligns correctly. The hype is going to be off-the-charts as he becomes the cause célèbre for the Best Player In College Football Heisman voting types.

18. KJ Jefferson, QB Arkansas

Like it is for every SEC quarterback, the chances to shine will be there. As is he’s going to be one of the conference’s best all-around playmakers and leaders, and his Heisman stock could go through the roof with slightly better passing numbers and a win over an SEC West big name.

17. DJ Uiagalelei, QB UNDECIDED

If I put Bo Nix here last season you’d all mock, laugh, and ridicule. And then Nix put up a Heisman-caliber season at Oregon. Uiagalelei might make the same transformation for the Ducks, or UCLA, or Auburn, or … he’ll get his shot to shine somewhere large.

16. Georgia starting quarterback

Unlike other top teams later on down the list, the quarterback who takes over Georgia likely won’t have the stats or responsibility to crank up a Heisman-level season. Even so, being the starting quarterback of another national title contender puts you on second base in the Heisman race.

Tennessee and Texas will probably have the nation’s most interesting quarterback fights this spring, but Brock Vandagriff, Carson Beck, and Gunner Stockton are big-time prospects who’ll be worth watching.

Ranking the 86 all-time Heisman Winners

15. Braelon Allen, RB Wisconsin

There are a whole slew of things that could make a Braelon Allen Heisman run go one way or another. Is he really going to stay at Wisconsin? For the moment he says he is. Will the Badgers dominate on the ground under Luke Fickell? Yeah, almost certainly. He’s one of the few backs with everything in place to push for a massive-stat run. The other should be …

14. Quinshon Judkins, RB Ole Miss

Bijan Robinson. That’s the problem – he wasn’t even a finalist – and that’s why there aren’t a lot of running backs on the list. You can be the best back in college football and not come all that close to winning the Heisman – it’s mostly a quarterback award now.

Judkins, though, might have the stats to go along with the elite talent and a ton of high-profile SEC games to break through the position pack.

If it’s impossible to win now as a running back, try …

13. Marvin Harrison Jr., WR Ohio State/Kayshon Boutte WR LSU

It took an insane set of circumstances and a perfect storm of factors – including a global pandemic that cut the season in half for a slew of key teams – for a receiver to win the Heisman when DeVonta Smith did it in 2020.

Boutte (chose to come back) and Harrison Jr. (not eligible until next year) are top ten overall NFL draft pick-caliber targets with the ability to be like Smith or, more likely, 2014 Heisman-finalist Amari Cooper. Either one might go from ultra-talented to finalist with an unstoppable season.

12. Jordan Travis, QB Florida State

Travis might not be all that big, but he’s got next-level skills and upside. Fortunately for Florida State, this was the wrong year to enter the draft as a quarterback if you’re not a sure-thing first rounder.

The stats will have to boost up a bit, but he’s got the all-around game, five years of experience, and the offense around him to be one of the ACC’s signature stars in a slew of high-profile games.

11. Drew Allar, QB Penn State

Here comes the hype.

The 6-5, 238-pound super-recruit had to wait behind better-than-you-think veteran Sean Clifford – I’ll save that rant for another time – but it’s going to be his team now. Penn State is loaded with young talent, and Allar should be the signature star who leads all of it. 2023 is expected to be the breakthrough season to maybe be what Michigan has been over the past few seasons.
