Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will choose between entering the 2020 NFL draft or returning to school for another year

One of the biggest wild-cards in the 2020 NFL draft class has made an announcement about his future, but only to set the stage for the real announcement.

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will make his decision on Monday, January 6th as to whether to enter this year’s draft or return to school for another year.

One of the top quarterback prospects in college football, Tagovailoa was widely regarded as a potential No. 1 overall pick before a hip injury ended his 2019 season prematurely.

Even with the injury, many projections still had Tagovailoa as a likely top-10 pick, though with the caveat that his medical evaluations would be key to maintaining that high draft stock.

Instead of taking those question marks into the predraft process, Tagovailoa could opt to Tuscaloosa for one more year, where he would try to lead the Crimson Tide back to the College Football Playoff after a disappointing finish to the 2019 season.

One of the more intriguing wide receiver prospects in the nation is returning to school instead of making the early jump to the pros.

Oklahoma State’s Tylan Wallace is returning to the Cowboys for the 2020 season, rather than entering the 2020 NFL draft. He announced his decision on Twitter.

Wallace was considered by some to be a top-10 prospect in his position group in the 2020 draft class, Wallace finished the 2019 season with 903 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Unfortunately for him, a tear in his ACL cut his season short. Wallace is electing to return to school for a chance to finish his college career on a better note.

If he’s able to stay healthy and return to the level of play he enjoyed before his injury, Wallace will be a wide receiver to keep a close eye on next season.

Widely considered to be a top-10 prospect in the 2020 draft class, Moses missed the entire 2019 season with a knee injury. Though many projected him to still be a first-round pick were he to enter the 2020 draft, Moses is electing to return to school for a chance to finish his college career on a better note.

If he’s able to stay healthy and return to the level of play he enjoyed before his injury, Moses could easily be a top-10 pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

One of the top defensive line prospects in the nation is spurning the pro ranks for one more season at the college level.

Florida State’s Marvin Wilson is returning to school for the 2020 season, instead of entering the 2020 NFL draft. He made his announcement via FSU Football’s official Twitter account Monday.

Listed at 6-5, 311 pounds, Wilson is a massive presence in the middle of FSU’s defensive line, giving the unit a dominant, disruptive anchor that NFL scouts will surely enjoy watching for another year. His return to school will give him a chance to further refine his promising skill set, and could end up making him a first-round pick in 2021.

2021 NFL draft: Battle for No. 1 pick starts with Fiesta Bowl

We’re still more than a year away from the 2021 NFL draft, but this year’s College Football Playoff is giving us an early preview of the top two candidates to go No. 1 overall in that class.

Saturday afternoon, Ohio State and Clemson will battle it out in the Fiesta Bowl for the chance to play for a national title. Leading them will be the two best prospects in the 2021 draft class.

After he torched Alabama in last year’s title game, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence was immediately crowned a future No. 1 pick, albeit two years before he could even be eligible. He’s experienced his rough patches throughout his sophomore season for the Tigers, but still has a rare skill set that should have him firmly planted in that conversation next offseason.

Once buried behind Jake Fromm at Georgia, Justin Fields transferred to Ohio State, replacing first-rounder Dwayne Haskins and leading the Buckeyes to a Big Ten title and a berth in this year’s playoff. His athleticism and versatility and well-documented, but it’s his prowess as a passer, both inside the pocket and when things break down, that will have him challenging Lawrence for the chance to go No. 1 overall in 2021.

Obviously, plenty can change in a year. Both of these talented passers will have to avoid major injury, and continue their development at their current pace to fend off the other in the race to the top of next year’s draft.

But they both have the talent and potential, along with the coaching staff and supporting cast, to end up at the top of the draft board when April 2021 rolls around.
