Steelers HC Mike Tomlin on the switch to Devlin Hodges: ‘He has not killed us’

Mike Tomlin didn’t hold back about Devlin Hodges.

On Tuesday, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced that Devlin Hodges would start at quarterback on Sunday when the Steelers take on the Cleveland Brown. This sends Mason Rudolph back to the bench, at least for the time being. When Steelers beat writer Tim Benz asked Tomlin why he made the change, Tomlin leaned hard into the microphone, smirked and answered in the least Tomlin way possible.

“He has not killed us.”

There are going to be plenty of people out there, fans and media alike who will try to make this comment from Tomlin about Rudolph. But it really isn’t that complicated. Tomlin wasn’t implying that Rudolph had killed the Steelers. He was simply indicating Hodges has taken care of the football and not done anything to lose games based on a small sample size.

The last time the Steelers squared off with the Browns, Rudolph turned the football over four times. I think it’s safe to assume Tomlin is banking on Hodges not turning the football over like that.

What did you make of Tomlin’s comments? Was he taking a shot at Rudolph or was this simply about Hodges’ small body of work?

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin names Week 13 starter

The Steelers have their starter vs the Browns.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have their Week 13 starter at quarterback. According to NFL reporter Andrew Siciliano, Devlin Hodges will get the start this week against the Cleveland Browns.

Hodges came in off the bench last week and led the Steelers to a win over the Cincinnati Bengals last week. Mason Rudolph struggled and forced Tomlin to make the change. Pittsburgh was wise to make the move because watching Rudolph play with so little confidence last week was a warning of just how bad things could be for him if he faced the Browns again in just three weeks.

The Steelers currently sit at 6-5 on the season and are holding onto the final playoff spot in the AFC. They need to keep winning to hold their place in the conference so getting some revenge on the Browns who beat them two weeks ago is a top priority.

Did Devlin Hodges earn the Steelers starting QB job?

Which quarterback starts for the Steelers this week?

On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a move to try to give the offense a boost and it worked. Devlin Hodges came in and got the Steelers their only touchdown of the game in place of Mason Rudolph. This now creates a quarterback controversy head coach Mike Tomlin will have to address.

Tomlin now must decide if Hodges did enough to earn the starting job this week against the Cleveland Browns.

The reality of the situation is this decision about which quarterback is better. Neither player is playing good football right now. Rudolph’s confidence seems shot and his arm went with it. And while Hodges is the gritty and all those other cliches, he doesn’t offer much in terms of skills.

This decision is about who gives the Steelers a better chance to win this week. The Steelers have five games left and who is under center must be a unique choice based on the circumstances. Based on everything this week, I don’t see how Tomlin goes with Rudolph.

Steelers vs Browns: 3 big worries for this week

There is plenty to worry about this week with the Browns.

Mandatory Credit: Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Just a week ago the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns squared off in a game that not only ended in a loss for the Steelers but the fight at the end has had a lasting impact on the roster. The NFL schedule makers decided to butt the two games with the Browns up in a three-week span so the two sides get back together this week in Pittsburgh.

Here are out three big worries.

The Browns are in Mason Rudolph’s head

We saw the after-effects of the fight on Rudolph this week against the Bengals. His focus was way off and his ineffectiveness led to him being benched in the second half. If this is the case against Cincinnati you have to wonder if he can hold it together against the Browns.

Browns defender takes not-so-subtle shot at Mason Rudolph

Will Mason Rudolph play against the Browns this week?

In just a week the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns will square off for the second time in three weeks and you can bet this one is going to get weird. The first time around the Browns beat the Steelers 21-7 and Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Rudolph was made a fool by the Browns defense.

Rudolph was benched in this week’s game and Cleveland defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson was asked about it after his game. He fired back quick he didn’t care but then answered back he hopes he plays against the Browns.

When asked why he made it clear. “You see him against us?”

That stings but he isn’t wrong. Rudolph threw four ugly interceptions against the Browns and probably should have been benched well before then. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has a serious decision to make about which quarterback to start this week. Does he go back to the quarterback with the hot hand in Devlin Hodges or does Tomlin hope Rudolph can bounce back?

Steelers vs Browns Week 13 kickoff moved up to avoid drama

The NFL might be avoiding a repeat of the last time the Steelers and Browns played.

The NFL has decided to move the Pittsburgh Steelers Week 13 rematch with the Cleveland Browns to the 1 p.m. timeslot as opposed to the national game at 4:25 p.m. on December 1 as reported by multiple sources including Steelers beat writer Gerry Dulac.

And I think we all understand why this happened. After the debacle at the end of the last game between these two teams, the NFL would probably be happier if these two teams played at some high school field in Pennsylvania where there is no access to cameras or the internet.

But before the Steelers get to this one Pittsburgh needs to focus on traveling to Cincinnati and beating the winless Bengals. Then they can bring the Browns to Pittsburgh to exact some revenge.
