Steelers vs Browns game status report: No JuJu Smith-Schuster this week

The Steelers will be without JuJu Smith-Schuster again this week.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Cleveland Browns this weekend they will be without starting wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. Smith-Schuster is the only Steeler on the team’s injury report listed as OUT for this week’s game.

Smith-Schuster continues to work through a knee injury but has been removed from the concussion protocol. With Smith-Schuster out again it’ll be Diontae Johnson and James Washington doing the heavy lifting in the passing game.

Running back James Conner is doubtful for Sunday’s game. Translation is he’s not playing. This will be Conner’s fourth missed game of the season. Conner only has 102 carries on the year and has taken a significant step back after a Pro Bowl season in 2018.

Benny Snell Jr. was a welcome addition last week at running back after missing a month with a knee injury. He should get the bulk of the touches again this week with Jaylen Samuels as more of a change of pace.

Steelers vs Browns: 4 players who must step up this week

These four Steelers need big games against the Browns.

Mandatory Credit: Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Cleveland Browns this weekend, they understand this is a game they cannot lose and still think in terms of the playoffs. But after losing to the browns 21-7 in the last matchup, what has to change to turn those results around?

It has to start with these four guys. Here are the four Steelers who must step up this week.

RB Benny Snell

Last week, once the run game got going it was because of Snell. The last times these two teams squared off, running backs only mustered 43 rushing yards. With James Conner almost certainly still out of action this week and Jaylen Samuels seemingly out of the mix for carries, it is Snell or nothing if the running back hopes to succeed.

Steelers LB T.J. Watt understands the spark Devlin Hodges gives

Devlin Hodges certainly seems to have the confidence of his teammates.

Over the course of the last six games, the Pittsburgh Steelers defense has been doing most of the heavy lifting. But on the rare occasion, the defense can’t do its part, the Steelers offense hasn’t been there to pick up the slack.

This was never more evident than when the Steelers took on the Browns two weeks ago. Pittsburgh lost to the Browns 21-7 and while the failings of quarterback Mason Rudolph got all the headlines, the Steelers defense got off the hook for a seriously down performance.

But head coach Mike Tomlin understands the last game against the Browns was an outlier for the defense but a change had to happen on offense. This is why head coach Mike Tomlin made the move to name Devlin Hodges starting quarterback.

Tomlin talked about the team needing a spark and linebacker T.J. Watt was asked if he felt like Hodges gave the offense that. Watt didn’t disagree, citing Hodges’ moxie and how he carries himself that does it. This brings up an interesting point when you contrast that to Rudolph. Has the team lost confidence in him not only because of his play but how he carries himself when things aren’t going right?

We will find out if Hodges can spark the Steelers for a second straight week.

Steelers vs Browns: Updated roster for NFL Week 13

Here’s a roster update for this week’s game.

Just two weeks ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns squared off and the Steelers playoff hopes took a hit. Now they two AFC North squads will square off again this weekend. The Steelers gameday roster has been in a serious state of flux in recent weeks because of injury and this week promises to be no different.

Here’s the Steelers current 53-man roster sorted by jersey number. If Pittsburgh makes any roster moves, check back and we will have it current.

Steelers vs Browns practice report: Still no JuJu Smith-Schuster at practice

The Steelers got James Conner back at practice on Thursday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t take Thanksgiving off as they prepare to take on the Cleveland Browns this weekend. The practice report is out and it’s something of a mixed bad.

The Steelers did see a partial return to practice by running back James Conner and Artie Burns. We don’t know the status of Burns after missing so much time but it would be good to have him back in the fold. But I couldn’t read too much into Conner back at practice. This shoulder problem has been lingering and with Conner’s style of play, re-injury is too risky right now.

Finally we have offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva. He was a full participant on Thursday as he also deals with a shoulder injury

But there’s still plenty of bad news. Despite being removed from the NFL concussion protocol on Wednesday, Smith-Schuster still did not practice due to his knee injury. If Smith-Schuster can’t go, look for James Washington to see a heavy workload.

Steelers communications director squashes rumor about Browns jerseys

Steelers communications director squashes rumor about Browns jerseys

There’s plenty of bad blood between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns after their game two weeks ago. It’s the biggest media event in either city. And because of that, everyone thinks they need to be part of the story. This is what happened with Pittsburgh radio host Andrew Fillipponi who claimed he spoke to a Heinz Field employee and they said they were not going to allow Browns fans into the stadium in Myles Garrett jerseys.

It sounded completely ridiculous at the time and Steelers director of communications cleared up Fillipponi’s misinformation quickly with a tweet to the contrary.

Having said that, you can bet tensions will be running high in the stands. Security at Heinz Field will need to be on top of their game after the fiasco at the end of last week’s matchup between these two teams.

Steelers vs Browns injury update: Multiple starters DNP

The Steelers were once again shorthanded at practice on Wednesday.

Wednesday’s practice was a mix of good news and bad news for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The bad news is starting running back James Conner and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster both missed the first practice of the week. The good news is Smith-Schuster has been removed from the concussion protocol so it’s only his knee keeping him out. That is good news, right?

Additionally, reserve cornerback Artie Burns missed practice with a knee and a shoulder injury limited starting left tackle Alejandro Villanueva. In his place, Chuck Okorafor took the first-team reps on the left side.

Pittsburgh is looking for some payback this week after falling to the Browns 21-7 just two weeks ago. This time the Steelers get the Browns at home and with a new starting quarterback. It’ll be Devlin Hodges running the Steelers offense this week with or without Smith-Schuster and Conner.

Report: Steelers teammates agreed it was time for Duck

Report: Steelers teammates agreed it was time for Duck

According to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler, players withing the Pittsburgh Steelers organization were on board with the idea of Devlin Hodges as the starting quarterback even before head coach Mike Tomlin made the announcement he was benching Mason Rudolph in favor of Hodges for this week’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

The real key for Hodges over Rudolph seems to be his confidence. Rudolph didn’t look like himself against the Browns two weeks ago and he did look like himself last week against the Cincinnati Bengals. Hodges might not be a superior talent over Rudolph but he comes in confident and with the confidence of his teammates.

According to Fowler, the Steelers’ defense believes it can win games as long as the offense takes care of the football. Right now, if you had to guess which quarterback is less likely to give it back to the other team, you’d have to go with Hodges. But this holds true for the entire offense. After Benny Snell Jr. had such a big game last week Tomlin pointed out his ball security was a big reason the team kept going back to him over other backs on the roster.

Steelers vs Browns: Pittsburgh remains home underdogs vs Cleveland

The Steelers find themselves in unfamiliar territory this weekend.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, it will be under rare Circumstances. According to Bet MGM, the Steelers are 1.5-point home underdogs to Cleveland. If you wonder how long it’s been since this happened you have to go all the way back to 1989.

It’s not a surprise the smart guys are leaning toward Cleveland. The Browns roughed up the Steelers 21-7 just two weeks ago in Cleveland. Pittsburgh is making a quarterback change, going with Devlin Hodges, in hopes of sparking the offense. The last time these two teams squared off, Mason Rudolph threw four interceptions and was completely ineffective.

Pittsburgh is in a fight for the final playoff spot in the AFC. They are currently 6-5 and sitting as the No. 6 seed. If the Steelers lose they would slide back to .500 and a tie with the Browns. However, Cleveland would have swept the season series and hold all tiebreakers if it comes down to that.
