Bills draft history without a first-round pick

2015: Ronald Darby

The player whom the Bills selected in 2014 won his first Super Bowl ring in February. Buffalo wanted a dynamic option for their offense, someone whom they could pair with their second-year quarterback, EJ Manuel. The Bills swapped 2014 first-round picks with the Cleveland Browns and sent their 2015 first-round pick to the Browns in order to move up five spots in the draft order that year. Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins was the pick. His potential and skill set was stellar. However, with a lack of consistent quarterback play, a longing for Watkins to play at 100-percent consistently, and a new regime in charge, Watkins was sent packing to the Los Angeles Rams prior to the 2017 season.

The pick:

In 2015, the combination of Doug Whaley and Rex Ryan selected Florida State cornerback Ronald Darby. Darby fared well under the Ryan regime, having a particularly productive rookie season. In the early preseason of 2017, Darby was traded to Philadelphia for Jordan Matthews and a third-round draft pick. Interestingly enough, the trade was made on the same day that the team shipped Watkins out west for EJ Gaines.
