Big 12 announces date to resume voluntary workouts

Many positive steps have been taken within the Big 12 to provide hope that the college football season could take place as scheduled.

After months of uncertainty, normalcy appears to be within arm’s length.

The Big 12 Board of Directors announced on Friday that student-athletes are able to resume voluntary activities on June 15. Players will be allowed to access campus athletic facilities and participate in workouts and strength and conditioning exercises.

Football players are able to access the facilities and begin workouts ahead of volleyball, soccer and cross country. This is a realistic measure in terms of eliminating large groups in the same vicinity as well as the necessary time needed to prepare for the start of the college football season.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby has been very articulate in abiding by all health and safety precautions while monitoring the ongoing situation regarding COVID-19. In an interview with Big 12 Radio on SiriusXM on Thursday, Bowlsby believes if it is deemed safe for athletes to be on a field in close contact, fans should be able to attend games while practicing social distancing measures.

In what appeared to be a farfetched idea of a college football season this year, many positive steps have been taken to provide hope that it could take place as scheduled.
