Adonai Mitchell, Byron Murphy go in first round of latest NFL mock draft

Adonai Mitchell is the first Texas player taken off the board at No. 17.

Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports released his updated 2024 NFL mock draft on Friday.

We’re about a month away from the three-day event and several Texas players are still being projected to be selected within the first three rounds.

Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy is widely viewed as the Longhorns highest rated draft prospect, but wide receiver Adonai Mitchell significantly improved his draft stock at the NFL Combine and Pro Day over the last month.

In Fornelli’s mock draft, it was Mitchell who was taken off the board first. Mitchell lands with the Jacksonville Jaguars at No. 17 overall.

Mitchell is a player whose name I hear pop up more often as the draft approaches. Although his overall production isn’t there compared to the other top receivers in the class, teams are intrigued by Mitchell’s combination of size, speed and physicality when attacking the football.

Murphy landed one spot behind Mitchell to the Cincinnati Bengals at No. 18 overall.

Whether or not this is Cincinnati’s most pressing need is up for debate, but Murphy is as disruptive an interior defender as you’ll find in this class. The Bengals have addressed some holes on offense already, and this pick is a boost to the defensive front.

The 2024 NFL draft will begin on Thursday, April 25.
