August 5 is here and one of Texas’ top targets, four-star edge Derion Gullette, is set to make a big decision at 3 p.m. CT.
Gullette is set to choose between Texas, Texas A&M and Ohio State.
We have discussed the importance of Gullette’s commitment at length. Undoubtedly, he is the type of player that could elevate the Texas defense.
While I have stated that edge is not a pressing need after last year’s class, missing here could make it a need for the 2024 class.
Texas A&M appears to be the main competition for Texas. The Aggies made a strong pitch in regards to career and academics this past weekend.
Gullette left the visit using Aggie talking points like “40-year decision,” among other things. Clearly, the message resonated with the program-changing player.
As for Texas, Gullette has strong relationships with Texas coaches and the Longhorns’ 2023 recruiting class.
Academically, the University of Texas can more than hold it’s own with its competition. But the relationship factor may be the deciding factor that wins out for Steve Sarkisian and company.
