You’ve heard it by now. Whether it be the manufactured narrative about Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields’ work ethic and love for the game, or his inability to progress through his reads or his lack of arm strength, there are questions. Questions that don’t make sense when you look at the film and evidence, but yet, somehow there they are.
There have been a lot of people come to Fields’ defense — including head coach Ryan Day — but perhaps nobody’s opinion means more than his teammates.
On that note, one of his offensive lineman who is also looking for his name to be called early in the 2021 NFL draft, had some things to say about all the nonsense brewing about “his quarterback” while appearing with Andrew Siciliano on the NFL Network. Wyatt Davis spent two years protecting Fields from would-be rushers, and he did the same to him as a player and person.
When asked if Justin Fields was a good leader:
“Absolutely,” said Davis.”
When asked if Fields works hard:
“Yes,” Davis continued bluntly.
And … answering the question that Justin Fields doesn’t always lock on the first read.
“Yeah — yes,” said Davis emphatically”
Davis then touched on what he says about all the naysayers that seem to be making noise out of nothing.
“Honestly, I think that this certain narrative that you’re talking about, that’s getting pushed out, I just sit there and laugh,” Davis said. “One, I know the type of guy that he is, and the type of guy he is in the film room. I mean, this is a guy that is the last one to leave the facility, and is the last one to leave the film room, and he’s doing everything in his power when it comes to the game to make sure there’s no mistakes. And, as far as him loving football — as far as that goes — he was the main one that was pushing the Big Ten to have a season.”
Davis then wrapped it up beautifully and said that teams are going to find out, maybe the hard way.
So, you know, I just kind of sit there and laugh at that narrative. I know the type of player he is, and I have to believe that these organizations (NFL teams) know the type of player he is. And if they slip up on him, I think it’s going to be a mistake that they’ll regret.”
