Lincoln Riley says Oklahoma would play Ohio State if it could, itching to play a game

Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley said the Sooners would play Ohio State this weekend if it was possible to do so.

Oklahoma had their game with West Virginia get called off for a second time on Thursday, this time for good. The Sooners will finish their regular season at just nine games and look ahead to the Big 12 Championship Game next week.

Of course, when news broke of the game with the Mountaineers getting the axe again, fans immediately started to speculate of a possible replacement opponent to fill the open weekend. The most juicy of those options to most would be a matchup with No. 4 Ohio State, who had their game with Michigan get canceled earlier this week.

When Riley was asked if he would be open to playing the Buckeyes on such short notice, he said he was in to do it if Ohio State was.

Riley went on to say he understood the logistics of it probably made it impossible, but that he would love for it to happen if it could.

The Oklahoma head coach had said multiple times earlier in the week the team’s desire to play this weekend despite having already locked up a spot in the Big 12 title game.

“We know the schedule,” Riley said after the Baylor game Saturday night. “In all years, but especially this one, the opportunity to play another game? If we can do it, we’ll be there.”

“I think just for our football team, we need to play games,” Riley said on Tuesday. “We’ve had so many bye weeks. And obviously had one bye week that was completely unexpected, and it wasn’t a normal bye week. Again, having the facilities shut down that long in the middle of the season was a different deal. Just for us to play the quality of ball and to make the improvements that we need to make, we need to play. I’m excited that we have the opportunity to play.”

As it stands currently, the Sooners will have another weekend off meaning they will have played only once since Bedlam way back on Nov. 21st.
