Longhorns Wire Roundtable: Who will be the next head coach at Texas?

Numerous names are being floated around to become Tom Herman’s successor at Texas.

Rumors are running rampant about the head coaching job at the University of Texas.

Coincidentally, the job isn’t even vacant yet. Tom Herman is navigating through his fourth year in Austin, but he continues to suffer inexcusable losses to lesser quality opponents each season.

The issues go far beyond that. Player development is notably lacking, game management has been poor and the recruiting classes are beginning to suffer from the underwhelming performance.

According to recent reports, Herman is likely to get the boot within the next few weeks. Texas has two regular season games left on their schedule — Kansas State and Kansas — but Herman could be let go at any moment if Texas’ top coaching candidate is interested in coming to Austin.

Several names have been thrown around as potential successors to Herman. Three-time National Championship winning head coach Urban Meyer is at the top of the list for obvious reasons. However, he may not be interested in returning to the sidelines due to health and family implications.

If the Longhorns were forced to take the Plan B route, they’re looking at candidates such as Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell, Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian and Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal.

It’s certainly realistic for Texas to test the waters and dip their toes into the NFL for a candidate such as Eric Bieniemy, the Kansas City offensive coordinator.

Regardless, the general consensus is that Texas will have a new head coach for next season. Longhorns Wire staff members each chose who they expect will land one of the most prestigious jobs in all of college football.
