Longhorns Wire Roundtable: Who will be the next head coach at Texas?

Numerous names are being floated around to become Tom Herman’s successor at Texas.

Chris Del Conte will be making his first and possibly only head football coach hire during his stint as an athletic director at Texas. No matter who he picks, it must be the correct hire. If Urban Meyer is not available, Mario Cristobal of Oregon would be a fantastic hire. In Year Four, Cristobal has taken the Ducks to an elite program out West. He is also seen as one of the best recruiters in the entire country. Cristobal may not have any connections to the Longhorns but would still be a home run hire.

If you take a look at two of Chris Del Conte’s recent hires at Texas, he prefers proven coaches who have shown that they can consistently compete for championships. Urban Meyer’s resume speaks for itself. He’s clearly the top choice for Texas and it would be crushing to have to look elsewhere as no other available candidate comes close. Even if Meyer only commits to Texas for a few short years, the impact on the program would extend far beyond that. All of my eggs are in one basket, it’s Meyer or bust at this point in time.

It is certainly all hands on deck for this coaching search. While Tom Herman has yet to be relieved of his duties, all reports indicate that it’s coming. The No. 1 guy is Urban Meyer but the longer this flirtation goes along, the less confident one should feel about landing him. The No. 2 guy on that list in all likeliness could be Matt Campbell. While he has the feel of Herman 2.0, he has beaten a more talented team two years in a row. What would happen if you combine a five-star culture with five-star players? My dark horse would be Steve Sarkisian from Alabama.
