Coaches, players, alumni and fans expressed their excitement via Twitter on Saturday night as Texas defeated the UTEP Miners in dominating fashion.
You could say they’re on cloud nine.
With two new coordinators and seven new assistants on the coaching staff, no one quite knew how this Longhorns team would operate. When you factor in the minimal offseason work due to the COVID-19 pandemic with several new faces on the roster, the question marks began to rise in terms of which players would receive the most opportunities.
That uncertainty was short lived after Texas took the field against UTEP. Their season opener was unexpected in the best ways possible. Texas looked fundamentally sound, prepared, crisp and showcased plenty of depth at each position.
Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger made his mark in the first half with 429 passing yards and five touchdowns, the most in any half in school history. Offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich couldn’t have had a better start in Austin. Texas’ offense operated quickly, aggressively and was able to spread the ball around to several different receivers.
Joseph Ossai lived up to the preseason hype and led the team in tackles, while defensive backs Josh Thompson and Chris Admiora each impressed in the secondary.
Dozens of other players could be listed here due to their individual highlights against UTEP, which is why Twitter was electric and full of positive energy throughout the game.
