What a whirlwind of news coming out of the college football community the past several days.
It appeared that all Power Five conferences had agreed to move forward with a conference-only schedule. However, the Big Ten and Pac-12 suddenly chose to postpone the college football season on Tuesday.
The SEC, ACC and Big 12 are continuing to move forward with a fall season. It’s going to be a bumpy road navigating this new norm due to COVID-19, but these three conferences trust their medical professionals enough to at least give it a chance.
Stadium Network reporter Brett McMurphy was the first to release a glimpse of the new Big 12 schedule. Although the Red River Rivalry remains on Oct. 10 at the Cotton Bowl, the season opener for the Longhorns has changed.
Big 12 schedule notes sources told @Stadium
*Big 12 games begin Sept. 26; title game Dec. 12 (Arlington)
* Start of season can be delayed to Oct. 10 & end Dec. 12 w/title game Dec. 19
* Sept. 26 KU at BU, UT at TT, WVU at OSU, KSU at OU, ISU at TCU
* OU-UT still Oct. 10 in Dallas— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) August 12, 2020
Texas now travels to Texas Tech on Sept. 26. There appears to be cushion in terms of delaying the season to as late as Oct. 10 if needed. The Big 12 title game is expected to take place on Dec. 12, but it can be pushed back to Dec. 19 if anything prevented the season from kicking off on Sept. 26.
It’s been an offseason of unknowns. Under these circumstances, team’s have had to be ready for whatever may come their way. This is now the third opening opponent that the Longhorns have had to prepare for.
Before the COVID-19 outbreak, Texas was scheduled to open the season in Austin against South Florida. There were then reports that the Longhorns would kick off against UTEP, but it appears we’re finally getting closer to finalizing the schedule.
At this point, the players would be happy to compete on any field against any opponent.
