Ohio State athletics continues to post outstanding APR numbers

The new APR numbers were released on Tuesday and Ohio State continues to excel in the classroom just as much as on the field.

The Ohio State athletic department doesn’t get nearly enough credit for the job it does in the classroom, and the latest APR numbers are just another case in point. Known mainly for success on the field of play, and stereotyped as a win at all costs culture by many that don’t do the research, Ohio State has turned into one of the best in the country with its academic performance.

The APR, or Academic Progress Rate, has been in place for most institutions for sixteen years now. It measures a scholarship student-athletes’ progress by semester in the classroom. The APR accounts for academic eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance. The most recent mulit-year APR scores are based on average scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.

And, wouldn’t you know it, Ohio State has once again blew perceptions out of the water across all of its varying sports according to numbers released Tuesday. Ohio State Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. John Davidson was proud to tout the historic year.

“This was a remarkable year for the Buckeyes in the Academic Progress Rate, a key measure of student-athlete academic success,” Davidson said in a statement. “The most recent single-year statistics show that 21 Ohio State teams received all the points possible for academic eligibility and retention and our athletics programs as a whole averaged an amazing 995/1000 – by far the highest in recent memory.”

For football alone (again, remember Ohio State recruits “athletes” as a win-at-all-costs measure), The Buckeyes finished just behind Wisconsin (986) for third place in the Big Ten with a multi-year average of 985. Northwestern led all Big Ten football programs (shocker) with a score of 995.

Here are some more impressive notes from the latest APR data released Tuesday as it relates to Ohio State.
