NCAA Academic Progress Rate Football Rankings 1-130: Which 5-7 Might Go Bowling?

The NCAA announced the 2020-2021 version of the Academic Progress Rate. Where do all 130 college football programs rank?

The Academic Progress Rate, or APR, was released measuring the improvements and academic success for the 2020-2021 school year. It didn’t exactly skip a year, but these are the first rankings since coming out since May of 2020.

And you care, why?

Besides wondering just how good the schools and teams are in the classroom, this is a big deal in the bowl world.

If there aren’t enough teams that finish with a bowl-eligible six wins, the teams that finish 5-7 are selected based on the APR ranking below – this is why Rutgers got the call last bowl season.

What does this mean? There are currently three projected open bowl spots, but it could be two if Buffalo beats Akron on Friday. Who are the top 5-7 teams according to APR?

Rice and then UNLV. After that, Michigan State and Auburn are tied.

From the NCAA, the APR is calculated as follows:

  • Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible.
  • A team’s total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by 1,000 to equal the team’s Academic Progress Rate.
  • In addition to a team’s current-year APR, its rolling four-year APR is also used to determine accountability.

CLEMSON, S.C. – Ten Clemson programs set or tied multi-year records for Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the NCAA’s data release on Tuesday, including six perfect 1,000 multi-year scores, and 14 single-year scores at 1,000. As a whole, Clemson set a department-record 997, which set a new mark for all sports. The release, which returned after a one-year hiatus, includes the 2017-18 through 2020-21 academic years.

“We’re incredibly grateful to our student-athletes, coaches and Nieri staff who continue to push us to new heights and congratulate them on this accomplishment,” said Director of Athletics Graham Neff. “We often talk about being able to achieve on and off the field at Clemson, and this report validates that.”

Women’s Golf, Men’s Golf, Softball, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Cross Country and Women’s Cross Country comprised the perfect 1,000 multi-year scores, while Football (999), Women’s Track (998), Women’s Basketball (991) and Men’s Track (988) also set program records.

All seventeen of Clemson’s eligible programs were above 967, with 14 of those coming in at 980 or better. Every women’s sport had a single-year APR of 1000 for the 2020-21 year.

Program Notes:

  • Baseball, Men’s Cross Country, Football, Men’s Golf, Women’s Cross Country, Women’s Golf, Softball and Women’s Tennis were each among the top ten percent in their sport, which historically has earned a Public Recognition Award.
  • The football program’s 999 multi-year score matched the highest among Division I Power Five institutions in this data release, and was tied for second behind only Columbia University. During this period, Clemson football won four ACC championships, advanced to four College Football Playoffs, and won the 2018 National Championship.
  • Football has been among the top ten percent of all football programs nationally in ten of the last eleven years.
  • Softball earned a 1,000 in its first data release, one of four ACC programs to record a multi-year rate of 1,000.
  • Baseball’s multi-year rate of 995 is tied for fourth among Power-Five schools, and second in the ACC (Duke, 997)
  • Women’s Golf has recorded a 1,000 in all seven years in which they’ve been eligible.
  • Men’s Soccer’s 989 was its third-highest on record
  • Women’s basketball’s 991 was 13 points higher than its’ previous record, a 978 in 2009-10.
  • Women’s Soccer has been above a 990 for each of the six previous years.

ABOUT THE APR

The Academic Progress Rate is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team.

The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years. Under the revised penalty structure, the Division I Board of Directors has set a cut score of 930 (out of 1,000) as a threshold for teams to meet or face possible sanctions. An APR of 930 projects a 50 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR). The goal of the NCAA’s academic performance program is improvement, not punishment. Not only does the program ensure accountability for student-athletes, teams and institutions, but also it provides fairness by considering individual circumstances per team and school.

Clemson Sets Graduation Success Rate Record

Clemson Athletics earned a department record 95 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for the 2011-14 cohort in data released by the NCAA on Thursday. It’s the eighth consecutive cohort in which Clemson’s department-wide GSR was at 91 percent or higher.

“The most important thing our student-athletes can do is graduate, and they have done so at an incredible level,” said Dan Radakovich, Director of Athletics. “To be above 91 percent for eight years, and at 95 percent in this data release, is a remarkable accomplishment by our student-athletes, the staff at the Nieri Family Student-Athlete Enrichment Center and our coaches.”
Among public institutions, Clemson’s department rate was tied for first in the ACC and third in the Power Five, just one percentage point behind the national public leaders. A Clemson-record eight programs earned perfect 100 percent scores for the cohort – baseball, men’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s golf, rowing, women’s soccer, women’s tennis and volleyball. Volleyball maintained its streak of 17 consecutive cohorts at 100 percent, while women’s tennis (12), men’s golf (6), baseball (5), men’s basketball (4) and women’s golf (3) also have active streaks at 100 percent.
Football’s cohort, which encompasses student-athletes from the 2016 and 2018 National Championship teams, set a program record (88), the ninth Clemson program to set or tie a record this cohort.

University of Alabama athletic teams record impressive APR scores

All 21 University of Alabama athletics teams scored above the national cutoff standard in the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR.)

The University of Alabama has once again placed at the top, this time in the classroom. In addition to excelling on the fields and courts, the Crimson Time athletic teams have also been excelling in the classroom. All 21 University of Alabama athletics teams scored above the national cutoff standard in the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR), 5 of which were in the top 10 percentile.

The APR is not a measure of the academic credentials of a school, but it’s really a way to show how schools are managing the academic progress and success of its athletes.

The figures and data released were from a 4 year period from the 2015/2016 season through the 2019/2019 season.

5 Alabama teams (football, basketball, gymnastics, women’s golf and volleyball) earned recognition from the NCAA for their APR scored that were in the top ten percentile nationally.

Alabama football posted a program record of 990, which is not only better than the national average for FBS teams by 22 points, but it also ranks second in the Southeastern Conference, behind Ole Miss who scored a 997.

Alabama men’s basketball also posted a 990 APR, which is 24 points higher than the national average.

Baseball posted an APR of 998, which is 11 points above the national average.

Women’s golf, gymnastics and volleyball all posted a perfect 1,000.

Women’s rowing and soccer both posted a 998.

Women’s softball posted a 997.

Women’s swimming and diving posted a 994, and the Men’s swimming and diving posted a 993.

Women’s tennis posted a 992.

Baseball and Women’s track and field both posted a 988, Men’s golf posted a 984, and Women’s cross country posted a 985.

Overall, 13 Alabama teams posted scores above the national average.

Ohio State athletics continues to post outstanding APR numbers

The new APR numbers were released on Tuesday and Ohio State continues to excel in the classroom just as much as on the field.

The Ohio State athletic department doesn’t get nearly enough credit for the job it does in the classroom, and the latest APR numbers are just another case in point. Known mainly for success on the field of play, and stereotyped as a win at all costs culture by many that don’t do the research, Ohio State has turned into one of the best in the country with its academic performance.

The APR, or Academic Progress Rate, has been in place for most institutions for sixteen years now. It measures a scholarship student-athletes’ progress by semester in the classroom. The APR accounts for academic eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance. The most recent mulit-year APR scores are based on average scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.

And, wouldn’t you know it, Ohio State has once again blew perceptions out of the water across all of its varying sports according to numbers released Tuesday. Ohio State Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. John Davidson was proud to tout the historic year.

“This was a remarkable year for the Buckeyes in the Academic Progress Rate, a key measure of student-athlete academic success,” Davidson said in a statement. “The most recent single-year statistics show that 21 Ohio State teams received all the points possible for academic eligibility and retention and our athletics programs as a whole averaged an amazing 995/1000 – by far the highest in recent memory.”

For football alone (again, remember Ohio State recruits “athletes” as a win-at-all-costs measure), The Buckeyes finished just behind Wisconsin (986) for third place in the Big Ten with a multi-year average of 985. Northwestern led all Big Ten football programs (shocker) with a score of 995.

Here are some more impressive notes from the latest APR data released Tuesday as it relates to Ohio State.

  • For the 2018-19 school year, Ohio State student-athletes combined for a 995 single-year APR, with 21 teams posting perfect 1000 scores.
  • Teams with 1,000 scores: men’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s gymnastics, men’s soccer, men’s swimming, men’s tennis, men’s track and field, men’s volleyball, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s fencing, women’s golf, women’s gymnastics, women’s ice hockey, women’s lacrosse, softball, women’s swimming, women’s tennis, women’s volleyball and rifle.
  • Twenty-three teams either increased their single-year score or maintained a perfect score.
  • Looking at multi-year scores, 11 teams have scores of 990 or better and 23 are at 980 or higher.
  • 990+ teams: men’s cross country, men’s fencing, men’s golf, men’s tennis, men’s volleyball, women’s golf, women’s gymnastics, women’s soccer, women’s swimming, women’s tennis, women’s volleyball.
  • Teams with 980-989: football, men’s ice hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s cross country, women’s rowing, women’s fencing, field hockey, women’s ice hockey, women’s lacrosse, softball, women’s track and field and rifle.

Well done again on the athletics front from Ohio State, the academic institution.

2020 NCAA Academic Progress Rate: College Football APR Rankings 1-130

The NCAA released the latest Academic Progress Rate, or APR, for all college football programs. Here are the rankings of all teams for 2020.

The NCAA released the latest Academic Progress Rate, or APR, for all college football programs. Here are the rankings of all teams for 2020.

The Academic Progress Rate, or APR, has once again been released by the NCAA – it measures the improvements and academic success for each school for the 2018-2019 school year.

And why do you care about the APR? It shows the commitment by each school to improving the academic side of the football programs. It also matters to the bowl world.

If there aren’t enough teams that finish with a bowl-eligible six wins, the teams that finish 5-7 are allowed to be taken based on their respective APR rankings below.

Which football schools are doing the best job at putting the college in college football?

From the NCAA, the APR is calculated as follows:

  • Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible.
  • A team’s total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by 1,000 to equal the team’s Academic Progress Rate.
  • In addition to a team’s current-year APR, its rolling four-year APR is also used to determine accountability.
