A lot in the middle
The Bills have utilized wide receiver Cole Beasley out of the slot plenty this season. In fact, after Week 12, he had more yards out of the slot than any player in the NFL this season, according to Pro Football Focus. Having said that, Buffalo offensive coordinator Brian Daboll used the middle of the field more than any other time in 2020 against the 49ers.
Beasley was the clear favorite target for the Bills, which is a great game plan. The Niners were without cornerbacks K’Waun Williams and Emmanuel Moseley, two nickel defenders. But again, Buffalo went above and beyond because tight end Dawson Knox, by far, also had his best game of the year.
Beasley led the Bills with nine catches for 130 yards… Both Beasley and Knox had touchdowns as well. Knox added four total catches with his score, a season-high. Allen does typically spread the ball out well, but week in and week out, the tight ends are typically excluded from that and this was a perfect opportunity for the Bills to put extra emphasis on the middle of an opposing defense… a very much depleted one at that.
