Seahawks fire OC Ryan Grubb after one year

Seahawks fire OC Ryan Grubb after one year

Black Monday is here, and coaches around the league are starting to lose their jobs. The Seattle Seahawks are participants this year, as they made the decision to part ways with offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb after one season. This comes on the heels of the Seahawks defeating the Los Angeles Rams 30-25 in their Week 18 season finale.

Seattle’s offense was wildly inconsistent this season, enjoying legitimate success while suffering from large stretches of ineptitude. It felt as if the Seahawks always started games slow, but they would often find their groove after halftime and get back on track. Unfortunately, this unit struggled in the red zone all season long, and never quite figured out a sustainable fix.

It wasn’t all bad, of course. Grubb did bring creativity to the role, which was sorely lacking under Shane Waldron. Grubb also deserves credit for unlocking Jaxon Smith-Njigba into the 100-reception, 1,130-yard monster he turned into this year. However, the biggest issue, and what likely led to Grubb’s ouster, is the fact his unit was wildly unbalanced. Seattle was No. 6 in the league in passing, but No. 30 in rushing. That simply is not going to cut it in this league, nor with Mike Macdonald, who clearly wants to make a physical ground attack a key component of his team’s identity. The separation likely stems from a philosophical difference.

Multiple times this year, it felt as if the Seahawks abandoned the run entirely. What sticks out the most was the Week 5 loss to the Giants, where a healthy Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet combined for only seven carries in the 29-20 defeat. Inexcusable lack of usage. Unfortunately, this is a trend that would frustratingly continue, such as the loss to the Vikings where Walker and Kenny McIntosh only had eleven total carries.

We at Seahawks Wire wish Grubb the best wherever he lands, but this divorce feels necessary. Seattle needs an offensive coordinator more in line with head coach Mike Macdonald, and now the search for one can begin immediately.

Sam LaPorta continues to set NFL records with Detroit Lions

Just two years into his NFL career, former Iowa Hawkeye and current Detroit Lion tight end Sam LaPorta is already setting records.

It has not taken long for former Iowa Hawkeyes tight end Sam LaPorta to come into his own in the NFL and take over the league by storm.

Through just two regular seasons in the NFL with the Detroit Lions, Sam LaPorta has already put himself among the elite group of tight ends across the league and has an argument to take over the throne as the best soon.

LaPorta has notched a record that shows how important he is to the Lions’ offense and quarterback Jared Goff.

Sam LaPorta has set the record for the most receptions by a tight end in their first two years in NFL history.

Through two seasons, Sam LaPorta has reeled in 146 receptions for 1,615 yards and 17 touchdowns. He is essentially a walking first down as he averages 11.1 yards per reception up to this point in his career.

The best game of the 2024 season came against the Buffalo Bills when he reeled in seven receptions for 111 yards.

This is a continued success from his time at Iowa where he was able to put up outstanding numbers despite questionable quarterback play.

At Iowa, LaPorta had 153 receptions for 1,786 yards and five touchdowns as the go-to wide receiver for Iowa.

Transfer portal action continues as Florida pulls former UAB safety

Florida gets its fifth transfer portal addition in the form of safety Adrian Maddox, a former UAB Blazer.

Billy Napier added another player to the 2025 Florida football roster on Sunday according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, marking the fifth commitment through the transfer portal for the Gators this offseason.

Former Alabama-Birmingham Blazers safety [autotag]Adrian Maddox[/autotag], a 6-foot-3-inch, 200-pound junior originally out of Conyers, Georgia, officially entered the portal on Dec. 10 — a day after it opened — and made a trip to Gainesville before the start of the recruiting dead period. After visiting other schools, including the Georgia Bulldogs, he decided on the Orange and Blue for his next destination with one year of eligibility remaining.

Maddox spent the 2024 season in Birmingham after transferring there from the Alabama State Hornets. He recorded 44 tackles (30 solo, two for a loss) along with eight defended passes, two forced fumbles and a pick-six last fall; Pro Football Focus assigned him an 83.9% coverage grade stretching over nearly 400 snaps.

The defensive back originally committed to the Hornets during the 2022 recruiting cycle and played 21 games over two seasons in Montgomery. Maddox finished with 90 total tackles — 9.5 tackles for loss — along with three sacks, and two interceptions plus All-Conference mentions both seasons; he was named a Jerry Rice Award finalist in 2022.

Maddox joins former Michigan Wolverines punter Tommy Doman, former UCLA Bruins wide receiver J.Michael Sturdivant, former Charlotte 49ers quarterback Deshawn Purdie and former UMass Minutemen edge defender Kofi Asare as Florida’s transfer portal newcomers.

Wisconsin in contention to land top 2026 running back, brother of recent transfer commit

A big recruitment to watch over the coming weeks and months

Wisconsin is one of five programs in contention to land class of 2026 four-star running back Amari Latimer, according to On3’s Chad Simmons

The Badgers were listed along with Tennessee, Miami, Michigan and Texas. Simmons writes that Latimer is nearing a decision.

Related: Tracking Wisconsin football’s transfer portal offers, visits and commitments

Wisconsin recently joined the mix for the four-star running back. Part of its inclusion is due to landing a transfer commitment from Jacksonville State cornerback Geimere Latimer, Amari’s older brother.

Geimere is poised to be a multiyear starter for the Badgers after two productive years at Jacksonville State, the latter a breakout campaign (42 tackles, three interceptions and five pass deflections).

Amari, meanwhile, could theoretically overlap with his older brother for one season. He’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 233 overall player in the class of 2026, No. 17 running back and No. 27 recruit from his home state of Georgia. The recruiting service has a prediction logged for him to choose the Longhorns, though that prediction is five months old.

Latimer’s recruitment could be a big story as official visits are scheduled this summer. Even if he commits in the near future, his recruitment may not be fully resolved until the early signing period.

Wisconsin’s class of 2026 has two players committed: three-star offensive lineman Benjamin Novak and three-star quarterback Jarin Mock. Coach Luke Fickell is looking for another strong class after finishing the 2024 and 2025 cycles ranked No. 25 and No. 28, respectively.

USC rout of Rutgers enables bench players to get extended minutes

USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb was able to give her reserves 79 minutes. JuJu Watkins played only 30, Kiki Iriafen only 27. That will keep this team fresh for Maryland.

Winning a game by 50 points is fun removed from any additional layers of context or explanation. However, one very tangible benefit a blowout offers is the chance to rest starters and make sure they don’t get overworked over the course of the season. USC women’s basketball picked a really good time to give its starters a lighter night. The Trojans’ 92-42 win over Rutgers on Sunday in New Jersey — in which USC led by 35 points early in the third quarter — gave the backups a lot of minutes and enabled JuJu Watkins to save some fuel for a big game later this week.

Basketball has five players on the court at all times. In a college game, which lasts 40 minutes, that means a coach has to account for 200 game minutes. Let’s do some quick math: If all five starters have to play 35 minutes, that’s 175 game minutes for the starters, leaving only 25 minutes for the bench. If all five starters play 30 minutes, that’s 150 minutes for the starters, leaving 50 for the bench.

Against Rutgers, the decisive win enabled coach Lindsay Gottlieb to hand out 79 minutes to the bench. The starters played only 121 minutes. JuJu Watkins regularly plays 35 to 38 minutes in important games. She was able to get more rest on Sunday, playing only 30 minutes. That’s a short night for her. No other USC starter played more than 27 minutes (Kiki Iriafen), and three starters didn’t play more than 23 minutes.

All of this matters in the big picture. USC giving starters shorter nights over the next two months will leave this team physically and mentally fresh for the NCAA Tournament.

All of this also matters in a much shorter and more immediate context, too. USC’s very next game is a huge one, on Wednesday night at undefeated Maryland, which is ranked in the top 10. USC getting a light night of work against Rutgers, with zero stress or drama, will have the Trojans fresh for the Terrapins in a major Big Ten women’s basketball showcase.

DeForest Buckner on Colts’ defensive issues: It’s “ego”

There are a number of factors that contributed to the Colts’ issues on defense, but a big one according to DeForest Buckner were the egos.

To state the obvious, a lot went wrong for the Indianapolis Colts’ defense this season. But if you ask defensive tackle DeForest Buckner what one of the biggest contributing factors were to the inconsistent play, he says it’s egos.

“Ego,” said Buckner on Monday when asked about the defensive woes. “There’s times where ego gets in the way. And I feel like, especially in our business, playing in the NFL at a high level and as a team, everybody needs to check their ego at the door.”

Buckner would go on to say that he ego problem he would feel it and see it on tape. It also wasn’t just one or two players, but “a lot of guys” that contributed to the issue. And as a leader, Buckner takes responsibility for that.

“I take part ownership of that and serving in a much better way next year,” said Buckner.

The Colts defense will finish the 2024 season ranked 24th in scoring defense, 28th in yards per pass attempt surrendered and 26th in run defense.

The tipping point for this unit, however, came in Week 17 against the New York Giants. In that game, the Colts defense surrendered 38 points to what had been the lowest scoring offense in football. This performance came on the heels of the defense giving up 30 points to a Tennessee offense that ranked 27th in scoring this season.

Has had been the case all season, missed tackles and assignment breakdowns resulting in explosive plays for the offense plagued the Colts defense in those two games.

“It’s not like we haven’t called things out throughout the season,” said Buckner. “I feel like as leaders in the locker room, holding guys accountable and one of those things, and that’s one of those things you can ask any one of my teammates that I do on a weekly basis. We just gotta do a better job with eliminating that stuff and we just gotta win.”

Following the game, defensive coordinator Gus Bradley called the play from the defense “embarrassing,” adding that while there may be accountability within the building, there’s a need for greater individual ownership over the results. These are sentiments that Buckner then echoed on Monday.

“You can hold guys accountable and all of this, but part of it is taking ownership and taking that personal accountability,” said Buckner. “You can call guys out and you can take ownership of your own stuff, but you can’t force someone to take ownership of their own stuff. That’s something we need to do a better job.”

As of Monday morning, when Shane Steichen met with the media, he said that a decision about Bradley’s future with the team hadn’t been made at that time. However, moving on from seems like a move that is inevitable at this time.

But having said that, a new defensive coordinator may not be the cure-all that the Colts hope it can be if the ego issues that Buckner described aren’t corrected.

“We all have egos but the great teams those guys they sacrifice that ego and check it at the door,” Buckner said.

Are Zendaya and Tom Holland engaged? Speculation runs wild after Golden Globes.

The actress sparked speculation with a stunning diamond ring.

Sunday night was a big one for the celebrities of both television and movies as the 82nd Golden Globes took place in Los Angeles.

It was a big event for Zendaya as she was up for an award for her phenomenal work Challengers, and both Challengers and Dune: Part Two were nominated for Best Picture awards. While the talented actress didn’t take home any statuettes this year — she won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Drama for Euphoria in 2023 — there was a shiny object that got a lot of attention.

MORE GOLDEN GLOBES: The best red carpet looks from the night

Zendaya wore two gorgeous dresses over the course of the night — a beautiful orange gown and a sparkly golden one — but also donned a stunning diamond ring on her left hand ring finger. The Spider-Man: Far From Home actress has been dating co-star Tom Holland since 2021, and the ring stood out for folks following at home immediately.

Los Angeles Times writer Amy Kaufman said the starlet was asked directly, and Zendaya didn’t deny the engagement. “She kept showing her ring, smiled coyly and shrugged her shoulders mysteriously,” the Times said. Additionally, the ring was not included in the listed jewelry Zendaya would be wearing as a Bvlgari ambassador.

A post from TMZ cited a source close to the couple confirming the engagement, but neither actor has directly announced the life event.
