New York Liberty and Breanna Stewart make individual and franchise records

Stewart became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 5,000 career points (242 games).

The New York Liberty faced off against the Atlanta Dream on Monday, with the Liberty defeating the Dream 81-75. In the process, the Liberty continued their best start in franchise history while Breanna Stewart smashed a WNBA record.

Stewart became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 5,000 career points (242 games), passing Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi (243 games). Stewart led the Liberty with 22 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block and had her 83rd career double-double. With that effort, Stewart passed Rebekkah Brunson for the ninth-most double-doubles in history.

Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu reached 2,000 career points after finishing with 10 points, four assists and four rebounds. She also hit two 3-pointers, extending her streak of at least one 3-pointer made in a regular-season game to 44, the longest active streak in the WNBA.

Additionally, Liberty guard Courtney Vandersloot became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 2,750 career assists (407 games). She joined Sue Bird (496 games) as the only two players in history to record at least 2,750 career assists.

The Liberty will face the Commissioner’s Cup champion Minnesota Lynx on July 2 at 7 p.m. ET at Barclays Center.

Lakers’ JJ Redick on Bronny James: ‘Bronny has earned this through hard work’

Bronny James was introduced by the Lakers on Tuesday, and earned high praise from newly hired coach JJ Redick.

Bronny James was introduced by the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, and the eldest son of LeBron James earned high praise from newly hired coach JJ Redick.

James was selected with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA draft on Thursday after playing one season at USC. He was one of two draft picks by the Lakers last week and came highly touted, given his background, skill set and potential.

Bronny has been the subject of much conversation from the outside about the reasoning behind the Lakers’ ultimate selection. However, the organization, led by president Rob Pelinka and Redick, is high on his potential on the court and his character off of it.

“Rob and I didn’t give Bronny anything,” Redick said. “Bronny has earned this. Bronny talks about his hard work: Bronny has earned this through hard work. For us, prioritizing player development, we view Bronny as case study one. His base level of feel, athleticism, point of attack defender, shooting and passing, there is a lot to like about his game.”

https://www.youtube.com/live/HUaiohuMJZs?si=wGNfXnn7I2K9v45Q

James averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists on 36.6% shooting from the field in 25 games as a freshman with the Trojans. Despite an inconsistent campaign, he was still considered a potential second-round pick as a talented player.

He helped his draft stock at the combine after measuring in with a 6-foot, 7 1/4-inch wingspan. He averaged 8.5 points in two scrimmage games and also went 19-of-25 in the 3-point star drill while registering the sixth-best max vertical (40 1/2 inches).

Teaming up with his father, Bronny has said, wasn’t his goal. But through careful work by him and his agent, Rich Paul of the Klutch Sports Group, who also represents LeBron, the first-ever father-son duo came to fruition on Thursday.

Bronny has always felt the pressure of being the son of the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. He revealed that pressure has since ratcheted up even higher, but he believes he can handle it.

(Joining the team) has for sure amplified the amount of pressure. I’ve already seen it on social media and on the internet talking about how I might not deserve an opportunity, but I’ve been dealing with stuff like this my whole life. It is nothing different but it is more amplified, for sure. I can get through it.

The 19-year-old was one of 13 players listed on the Lakers’ roster for the California Classic and NBA Summer League, along with first-round pick Dalton Knecht and roster players Maxwell Lewis and Colin Castleton, among others.

Bronny will debut on Saturday at the Chase Center in San Francisco against the Sacramento Kings. The team will play three games there before starting a five-game campaign on July 12 versus the Houston Rockets in Las Vegas, Nevada (7:30 p.m. EDT, ESPN).

He is eager to get started and showcase himself.

“I feel like I know how to play the game already and the right way but just being more aggressive on offense and creating my shot because I know that is what I can do,” James said. “Just being more aggressive.”

2025 running back sets Ohio State visit

2025 running back sets Ohio State visit #GoBucks

Ohio State may have missed out on Jordon Davison, but it is moving onto its next target in three-star prospect, Shekai Mills-Knight. The Tennessee product is set to visit Columbus, Ohio, on July 29 and the Buckeyes will now no doubt be in the mix for his commitment.

The consensus top 35 running back in the country recently cut his shortlist down to eight and Ohio State made the cut along with Alabama, Auburn, Miami, Michigan, Missouri, Ole Miss and of course, Tennessee. Most are viewing the Volunteers as the favorite, but as we have seen before, the Buckeye recruiting class can pull of miracles once a recruit is on campus.

How will Notre Dame use Northwestern transfer Rod Heard II?

How will Notre Dame use Rod Heard II? A little bit of every way it seems…

Notre Dame spent their spring short a starting safety as transfer [autotag]Rod Heard II[/autotag] was finishing up his time as a Northwestern student down the street.

Heard II follows the same path [autotag]Brandon Joseph[/autotag] took a couple years ago, starring at Northwestern before ending up in South Bend.Ā  So what does Heard bring to the mix for Notre Dame’s already talented secondary?

ā€œBeing able to maximize and make plays in all different phases of the game, I think thatā€™s what makes me a special player,ā€ the grad transfer said in late June. ā€œI want to maintain that.ā€

ā€œAll these (interior) spots are kind of interchangeable now anyway,ā€ said Heard, listed at 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds. ā€œI think thatā€™s why they wanted me here, because I still have the ability to play the nickel, play safety, play zone coverage, play man coverage and all that.

It seems to be a little bit of everything is what Heard will bring.

Takeaways from Brent Venables’ comments during first day of the SEC era

Oklahoma’s head coach had plenty of positivity on ESPN with Paul Finebaum on SEC moving day in Norman.

Oklahoma Sooners head coach [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] was adamant about the past, present and future of the OU football program as the Sooners were becoming official [autotag]SEC[/autotag] members on Monday.

Venables joined ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum on SEC Network live from Norman, as the SEC celebration festivities were in full bloom. If anyone needed selling on the Oklahoma football legacy, Venables made an extremely compelling argument.

ā€œWeā€™re one of the top five legendary, iconic, winningest programs in the history of college football,ā€ Venables said on “The Paul Finebaum Show.” ā€œThis is a program, whether itā€™s the 47-game winning streak or the most conference championships in the history of college football. The national championships, all the Heisman Trophy winners. The countless players that are now in the Hall of Fame, both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame. The consensus All-Americans, you start going through all the draft picks, things of that nature, this program stands on its own two legs.”

But Venables wasn’t only excited about what has already happened in Norman. He exuded the promise that the Sooners have in the here-and-now as well as down the road.

Venables began with his offense, speaking on his new quarterback, sophomore [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag].

ā€œI love where weā€™re at,ā€ Venables said. ā€œWeā€™ve got tremendous experience coming back at the skill positions. Certainly Jackson, thisā€™ll be his first full season. Jackson is as talented a player as there is in college football. Heā€™s a winner. Heā€™s won his whole life. Smart guy, great instincts, heā€™s got tremendous skill, heā€™s got great toughness to him. He can run it, he can throw it. Again, this is a game of development … wherever he ended the season in his first collegiate start, heā€™ll be on another planet. My expectation of where we start at the beginning of the year, heā€™ll develop and get better. Heā€™s tough, heā€™s got great self-awareness to him. Heā€™s got all the traits that allow you to have to kind of go through it, both the good and the bad, and he responds to adversity. Just a tremendous leader and players play hard for him.ā€

Venables was then asked about his calling card – the defense.

ā€œWeā€™ve made steady improvement,ā€ Venables said. ā€œItā€™s been incremental. It canā€™t ever happen fast enough. Youā€™re never satisfied. But this will be year three. First time that weā€™ve had third-year players in our system, give or take seven or eight starters back, so we have some experience within our schemes.”

The third-year head coach lauded the attitude of his players and the attention to detail that is becoming the culture at OU.

“Weā€™ve developed in the weight room, thisā€™ll be going on our third year, so thatā€™s the weight room, thatā€™s nutrition, thatā€™s recovery – all those areas that are incredibly important. But I love our buy-in, the investment that our players have in that locker room. This is a very highly invested team. Several guys chose to come back. They wanted to help lead us. Thereā€™s multi-layered reasons guys want to come back, but one of the reasons is to leave your mark. They have an opportunity to do that going into the SEC with a group of guys that are tough, hard-working guys. Really exciting.ā€

Venables also didn’t bite when questioned about the public perception that the rival Texas Longhorns are ahead of OU leaving the [autotag]Big 12[/autotag] and entering the SEC.

ā€œThis is a program thatā€™s been established for a very, very long time. We donā€™t look at other programs to try to compare ourselves. Doesnā€™t do us any good. We focus inside out. Thatā€™s what we need to do to be an SEC championship-caliber football program. So thatā€™s where our focus is,ā€ Venables said.

These comments, and others, show the alignment of the football leadership at Oklahoma, firmly invested in preserving the rich history of the Sooners. They also show that, though nationally the Sooners aren’t predicted to make a run this year, their head coach isn’t focused on the outside noise.

Venables may finally have enough of the right pieces in place to make another leap in 2024. He’s also building up the future of the program, and the folks in charge are dedicated to doing whatever it takes to win at a high level in the SEC.

Venables has seen what a national championship program looks like in the [autotag]College Football Playoff[/autotag] era, winning two national titles as the defensive coordinator at Clemson in 2016 and 2018. The Tigers went toe-to-toe with the SEC’s biggest bully (Alabama) and have the hardware to show a couple of victories. He’s also seen what it can look like in Norman, as the defensive coordinator on the 2000 national title team. His statements to the frontman of ESPN’s SEC coverage illustrate the mindset and the culture that he’s obsessed with building at Oklahoma.
