Georgia cornerback returning for 2024 season

Georgia Bulldogs cornerback, who missed the Orange Bowl with an injury, returning for 2024

Georgia Bulldogs cornerback Julian Humphrey is returning for the 2024 season. Humphrey, a redshirt freshman, played in nine games for the Bulldogs in 2023.

Jan. 2 update: Julian Humphrey has announced that he is entering the transfer portal.

The 6-foot, 190-pound defensive back had a breakout game against the Missouri Tigers in 2023. Humphrey, who has excellent speed, announced his intentions to return via social media (Warning: Strong language is used in post).

Humphrey suffered a shoulder injury against the Ole Miss Rebels on Nov. 11 and has not returned. Humphrey missed the Orange Bowl, but should be able to return in time for the 2024 season.

Humphrey is arguably Georgia’s top returning cover cornerback. He recorded 11 tackles and two pass deflections in 2023. Humphrey and Daylen Everette are projected (way-too-early) to start at cornerback for Georgia in 2024. The Bulldogs are also returning cornerback Daniel Harris.

Good, bad and ugly from Vikings 33-10 loss vs. Packers

The Minnesota Vikings lost to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football 33-10, all but ending their hopes at making a playoff run. Chris Spooner looks at the good, bad and ugly from a disappointing performance.

Just like that, the Minnesota Vikings 2023 season is all but over. Last week’s loss against the Detroit Lions removed all possibility of taking home the NFC North title. This week, with a 33-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football, the Vikings have been all but eliminated from the NFC playoff picture entirely.

Minnesota isn’t mathematically eliminated. There is still a scenario in which they can make the playoffs, but it’s far-fetched. Minnesota would have to win next week against the Lions. They would also need the following to happen.

  • Packers to lose against the Chicago Bears
  • Seattle Seahawks to lose against the Arizona Cardinals
  • Either the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or New Orleans Saints to lose their game.

It’s not impossible, but the loss makes a playoff berth highly improbable. But Minnesota even being in this spot at all was highly improbable, after losing Kirk Cousins for the season and the quarterback carousel that followed.

That carousel played a major role in the Vikings’ ultimate demise, as starting quarterback Jaren Hall was benched for former starter Nick Mullens. The move provided a little bit of a spark, but not nearly enough, as Minnesota got blown out at home against their division rival. Here’s the good, bad and ugly from a disappointing performance on Sunday Night Football.

Former Texas A&M stars Donovan Wilson and De’Von Achane deliver big Week 17 performances

Two former Aggies who starred at Kyle Field during their college days are now excelling in the NFL on the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins.

Two former Texas A&M football players who starred at Kyle Field during their college years are now excelling at the next level.

Dallas Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson and Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane each had performances in Week 17 that would make the 12th Man proud.

Wilson and America’s Team led Detroit 17-13 with just over two minutes to go on Saturday night at Jerry’s World. Lions quarterback Jared Goff targeted tight end Sam LaPorta on 1st-and-10 and Wilson made a diving interception to essentially seal the victory for Dallas.

Following the win and a 35-31 Philadelphia Eagles loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, the Cowboys are now the No. 2 seed in the NFC and can clinch the NFC East next week with a victory in the nation’s capitol versus the Commanders.

Achane has had an impressive rookie season in the Miami backfield alongside veteran RB Raheem Mostert. The Dolphins were dominated by the best team in the NFL, the Baltimore Ravens, 56-19 on Sunday but Achane had an impressive individual performance.

The rookie halfback led Miami with 137 all-purpose yards. He tallied 14 carries for 107 yards rushing and 4 receptions for 30 yards receiving and a touchdown. Achane scored his 10th tuddy of the year on a 1-yard completion from former Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa to begin the fourth quarter.

Next Sunday, Achane and the Dolphins host the Buffalo Bills at Hard Rock Stadium with the AFC East title and No. 2 seed on the line.

Report: Panthers inquired about Lamar Jackson in offseason

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Panthers were one of two teams to inquire about Ravens QB Lamar Jackson this past offseason.

Well, maybe Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer really is in on every deal — even if he’s not always “overly aggressive.”

In continuing his case for this season’s Most Valuable Player award on Christmas night, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson reignited the conversation about his availability this past spring. Numerous passer-needy teams were, once again, criticized for their lack of serious interest in the electric game-changer.

Among those teams were the Carolina Panthers — who, according to a report Sunday morning by ESPN’s Adam Schefter — showed interest in acquiring Jackson this past spring. Schefter writes:

The two teams known to have inquired about Jackson’s services were the Las Vegas Raiders and Carolina Panthers, according to league sources, but neither team got overly aggressive with Jackson, and neither came close to signing him to an offer sheet that the Ravens would have had a chance to match.

Even if the Panthers had gotten Jackson to agree to a deal, the Ravens would’ve had the opportunity to match it and bring the 26-year-old superstar back. And if the Ravens decided not to match — which was an unlikely prospect, anyway — the Panthers would’ve had to relinquish a pair of first-round picks as part of the deal.

In the end, Jackson and the Ravens landed on a five-year, $260 million extension. The Panthers, not too long after, landed on Bryce Young with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 draft.

NFL Power Rankings Week 18: Ravens tighten grip, Cowboys and Bills climb as season end nears

The final week of the regular season has arrived, and the pecking order is coming into focus.

There’s just one weekend of football left for 18 NFL teams. While there are still a myriad of clubs hopeful they’ll be invited to the dance, they all aren’t going to make it. Only 14 teams will make the tournament, single-elimination style. As of now, the No. 1 seeds have been determined but everything else is pliable.

With Baltimore and San Francisco running both their respective coasts and conferences, the rest of the country is jostling for position. The Dallas Cowboys returned to the win column, while the Buffalo Bills have a chance to either be the No. 2 seed in the AFC or miss the playoffs entirely. Here’s a look at which teams have the most credibility heading into the final game.

Brian Daboll’s curious late-game decisions cost Giants, Tyrod Taylor

In the final moments of a game they could have won, the New York Giants’ coaching staff added to what was a comedy of errors in Week 17.

When New York Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor missed a wide-open Saquon Barkley on a two-point conversion attempt that would have put his team up late, all he wanted was an opportunity at redemption.

That came with 1:08 remaining on the clock when the Giants got the ball back at their own 35-yard line.

On the first play of that drive, Taylor hit Barkley right in his hands — he wasn’t going to miss twice — but the running back dropped the ball.

Sensing he had to create some magic of his own, Taylor took the second-down snap and scrambled for 31 yards, setting the Giants up at the Los Angeles 34-yard line. A quick spike on first down stopped the clock with 42 seconds remaining.

The Giants were still breathing and they had a shot, but they had to chew up more yardage. The aging Mason Crosby had already missed an extra point earlier in the game and neither kicker was finding any success on the day.

That’s when things got weird.

Whether it was head coach Brian Daboll or offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, someone called a run up the middle with no timeouts. Barkley was taken down two yards in the backfield.

“Yeah, I’d like to have it back,” Daboll told reporters after the game.

Daboll repeated that same line three times, refusing to provide any additional context to the decision-making. And while the Rams did call a timeout to stop the clock, the damage had already been done and the Giants couldn’t recover. Crosby eventually missed a 54-yard field goal wide left.

“I don’t make that decision. I don’t call the plays,” Barkley said. “That’s not to diss the coach or coaches. They probably had a situation, they knew what we needed to get to—the line that we had to get to for the kick—and that’s the decision that they made and the Rams made a good play. The defense made a good play.

“I kind of look at it as you don’t really know what’s the right call. If it works, it’s the right call. If it doesn’t, it’s a bad call. However you want to look at it. If we run the ball, we throw the ball, we call that play and I break and I get 20 yards and we spike it, it’s a great call. That’s the NFL. They made a good play. We still had an opportunity to win the game and we fell short, but a lot of opportunities, a lot of plays left on the field.”

No one in the Giants’ locker room was without blame on Sunday but it could have all been forgotten if the coaching staff just made the right calls in the final moments.

Game time for Panthers’ Week 18 matchup vs. Buccaneers revealed

The Panthers and Buccaneers officially have a game time for their regular-season finale.

Luckily, the Carolina Panthers’ 2023 season will come to an end as soon as possible.

The NFL has officially announced the game times for its 18th and final week of regular-season action. And the Panthers, who will be welcoming in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this upcoming Sunday, are set to kick off at 1 p.m. ET.

Carolina’s clash with Tampa Bay will, of course, coincide with the other NFC South matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints. Entering Week 18, the division remains up for grabs between the 8-8 Buccaneers, the 8-8 Saints and the 7-9 Falcons.

If the Buccaneers beat the Panthers, the NFC South is theirs. If the Panthers win and Saints win, the crown goes to New Orleans. And if Panthers and Falcons win, the title settles into A-Town.

But as far as the Panthers are concerned, they probably don’t care who wins the South. They’re just trying to close their most embarrassing season in franchise history on a victorious note.

2024 NFL draft: Giants currently slated to select 5th

If the regular season were to end today (and it doesn’t), the New York Giants would select fifth overall in the 2024 NFL draft.

Following their 26-25 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, the New York Giants are slated to pick fifth overall in the 2024 NFL draft, per Tankathon.

Of course, the debate continues over whether the Giants should draft a quarterback in April.

With the rarity of picking as high as the Giants are projected, it may be wise to target a QB. On the other hand, general manager Joe Schoen seems to be focused on a plan around Daniel Jones and it would be a questionable decision to move off Jones after just six starts into the contract Schoen and the Giants gave him.

The Giants’ roster needs improvement and has plenty of positions to address if they go in a direction other than QB.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears (via the Carolina Panthers) clinched the first overall pick while the Giants’ division rival, the Washington Commanders, moved up and are now slated to pick second overall.

It’s an odd draft where the only team surely targeting a quarterback would be the New England Patriots (currently 3rd overall). Once the season concludes, you can bet Schoen and the Giants will look at all the options, no matter where they are picking.
