NFL sets kickoff time for Ravens-Steelers season finale in Week 18

The NFL just announced that the Baltimore Ravens will host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday in the season finale

The Ravens are division champions and the top seed in the AFC, and now John Harbaugh’s crew will spend the next few days trying to figure out how to keep the Steelers out of the playoffs.

The NFL just announced that the season finale at M&T Bank Stadium will be played on Saturday afternoon as part of a double-header.

The Texans and Colts will face off on Saturday night, with both teams having a shot at the AFC South title, depending on what happens with Jacksonville.

Baltimore could rest critical starters and contributors while knowing that the Wild Card Weekend bye would mean the team may go almost a month without any significant game action.

The last time John Harbaugh’s group took that approach, they were upset at home by the Titans in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Packers’ season finale vs. Bears to be played at 3:25 p.m. on Sunday

The Packers will host the Bears at 3:25 p.m CT on Sunday, Jan. 7. A win at Lambeau Field would clinch a playoff spot for the Packers.

The season finale between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field will be played at 3:25 p.m. CT on Sunday, Jan. 7 and will be broadcast by CBS, the NFL announced on Sunday night.

The Packers cruised past the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium, setting up a scenario where a win over the Bears at Lambeau Field next Sunday will clinch a playoff spot for Matt LaFleur’s team.

The Bears are 7-9 after winning four of the last five games but are mathematically eliminated entering the season finale. Chicago beat the Atlanta Falcons 37-17 on Sunday.

The Packers and Bears will be one of eight games played in the 3:25 p.m. timeslot. The primetime game — the final regular season game of the year — will be the Miami Dolphins vs. Buffalo Bills, or the AFC East title game.

The Packers were in a similar spot last year — needing a win at home to clinch a playoff spot — but lost to the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field in the season finale.

Lions schedule set for the Week 18 matchup with the Vikings

Lions schedule set for the Week 18 matchup with the Vikings

The NFL doesn’t set dates or times for the final weekend of action until the Week 17 action concludes. When the Packers domination of the Vikings was near its merciful end on Sunday night, the league released the full slate for Week 18.

The Lions will host the Vikings in Ford Field at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, January 7th. With the Lions locked into the No. 3 seed, barring losses by the Cowboys and Eagles, and the Vikings in need of considerable assistance to sneak into the No. 7 seed in the NFC, their Week 18 finale isn’t deemed one of the games worthy of juicier time slots on Saturday or Sunday.

Last year, the Lions prevented the Packers from making the playoffs with a win in Green Bay in the final regular season game of the 2022 season.

Jaguars’ Week 18 finale vs. Titans scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday

The NFL announced the full schedule for Week 18.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ regular season finale will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday, the NFL announced near the end of a Sunday Night Football game in Week 17.

The Jaguars will be the AFC South champions if they beat the Tennessee Titans in Nashville on Jan. 7. But a day before Jacksonville gets that chance, the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans will play Saturday night to take temporary control of the division.

If the Jaguars lose to the Titans, they can still get in the playoffs. Jacksonville would need the Baltimore Ravens to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday and the Las Vegas Raiders to beat the Denver Broncos later in the day Sunday.

Anything less than a win against the Titans would be a massive disappointment, though.

Tennessee lost by 20 in its Week 11 game at EverBank Stadium and dropped to 5-11 on the year with a 26-3 loss to the Texans in Week 17.

Last season, the Jaguars beat the Titans in a Week 18 primetime game to secure the AFC South title.

Dolphins-Bills for AFC East title to close out ‘SNF’ regular season

The AFC East title will be on the line in Game 272 of the NFL regular season

The “Sunday Night Football’ game to close out the 2023 regular season will have the AFC East title on the line.

It was announced toward the end of ‘SNF’ that the Buffalo Bills’ visit to the Miami Dolphins in Week 18 will be Game 272, the one that closes out the regular campaign.

The Dolphins will come into the contest after being shellacked by the Baltimore Ravens, 56-19. They currently lead the AFC East at 11-5.

The Buffalo Bill are 10-6 and have won their last four in a row.

Kickoff is on Jan. 7 at 8:20 p.m. ET.

ESPN CFB experts share betting tips for the New Year’s Six bowls

ESPN CFB experts make their predictions for New Years Bowls

While there will be a lot of people emotionally invested in the College Football Playoffs from a fans perspective, there are a lot of people who want to get in on the action but have no horse in the race. One fun way to enjoy the New Years Bowl games is by gambling responsibly.

With the games set to take place tomorrow, Michigan is currently a two-point favorite over Alabama while Texas is a four-point favorite over Washington. Alabama and Texas have seemed to be where the money has been leaning this far, but there is still plenty of time until both games kick off for that to change. ESPN’s Matt Miller and Kevin Pulsifer made their predictions for all of the New Years Days bowls.

When Miller was asked his favorite bet of the day he said,”Alabama +1.5. Picking the Crimson Tide to cover after watching them dismantle Georgia is the easiest pick of the games. In fact, I think Alabama wins by at least one score thanks to a punishing defense the likes of which Michigan has not seen this year.”

Miller and Pulsifer both agreed that the Tide were there favorites to win this years Playoffs saying, “I’ll go Alabama. The defense doesn’t get enough love, as we all obsess over offensive football. But let’s be real — Michigan hasn’t wowed anyone offensively, and Alabama has more defensive talent (four potential NFL first-rounders) and a better scheme than anyone in the nation. Giving Nick Saban a month to prepare for your offense is a bad idea.

With Nick Saban’s experience and the SEC’s dominance over the Big Ten during the Playoff era, it is hard to bet against the Crimson Tide. This is definitely Jim Harbaugh’s best Michigan team to date though. A meeting under the Rose Bowl lights is guaranteed to be an epic day for football.

LeBron James warns the Lakers ahead of home-heavy schedule

The Lakers have lots of home games coming up in January, and while it is an advantage, LeBron James said it could also breed complacency.

Over the last few weeks, the Los Angeles Lakers have been playing most of their games away from Crypto.com Arena, and it has been a factor in them losing eight of their last 11 games. With a 17-17 record, they head into 2024 in ninth place in the Western Conference and in need of a pick-me-up.

Their resulting lack of energy was evident on Sunday when they lost, 129-109, to the New Orleans Pelicans. Los Angeles was outrebounded by 12 and gave up 25 second-chance points, while it was outscored by 21 points from behind the 3-point line.

Luckily, the team will have 11 of its next 12 games at Crypto.com Arena. That will allow players to sleep in their own beds without having to catch any late-night or early-morning flights and use the team’s facilities to train and rehab.

But LeBron James warned his troops about the complacency that could result from having so many games in succession at home.

For the Lakers to revive their championship aspirations, they will have to win almost all of their upcoming home games. If they do so, the confidence they gain will help them when they head out on the road again.

NFL reveals Week 18 schedule, time of Rams-49ers game

The NFL announced the dates and times of every Week 18 game, including the Rams-49ers finale at Levi’s Stadium

The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers don’t have much to play for in Week 18, but it’s still a rivalry game between two teams that don’t like each other very much. The Rams can clinch the No. 6 seed with a win, while the 49ers can rest their starters after already locking up the top seed in the NFC.

With very little playoff implications, the NFL decided to put Rams-49ers in the late afternoon window in Week 18. Kickoff will be at 4:25 p.m. ET from Levi’s Stadium next Sunday, a rematch of their Week 2 battle that was won by the 49ers, 30-23.

The game will be broadcast on FOX Sunday afternoon as both teams wrap up their regular-season schedules.

Kyle Shanahan already said the 49ers will rest some of their players in this game against the Rams, and it’s possible Sean McVay will do the same with his top contributors.

Player grades: Thunder extends winning streak to four with 124-108 win over Nets

Player grades for the Thunder’s 124-108 win over the Nets.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Missing a ferocious dunk, Lu Dort sent the crowd into a different frenzy with a second-chance 3-pointer to hit the exclamation mark in OKC’s double-digit win.

On New Year’s Eve, the Oklahoma City Thunder collected a 124-108 win over the Brooklyn Nets. The win extends OKC’s winning streak to four games.

“I thought there were a couple of moments where we — I wouldn’t call it sticky — but I just thought we didn’t make the early play in transition,” Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault said. “I thought we had a lot of opportunities tonight to do that. But when we did, we got really, really good stuff.

“The game was fun when we did that. We did it enough obviously to have a really good offensive night but definitely had to course-correct a couple of things during the course of the game.”

After quickly trailing the Nets 8-0 in the opening minutes, the Thunder ended the first quarter by closing the gap and only trailing by three points. A 26-point second quarter helped OKC enter halftime with a 59-56 lead.

Coming out of the break, the Thunder continued to throw their best punch in the third quarter with a 30-point period that saw OKC enter the final frame with a double-digit lead.

The fourth quarter was much of the same story as OKC grew its lead to as high as 21 points before Brooklyn eventually waved the white flag in the later portions of the final frame.

It was another excellent offensive outing for the Thunder. They shot 54% from the field and went 18-of-33 (54.5%) from 3. They also dished out 31 assists on their 45 buckets.

“A lot of it is just creating advantages,” Daigneault said on their ball movement. “It’s hard to move the ball if you can’t move an advantage… Our guys have done a great job at working together to get those.”

All five Thunder starters scored 17-plus points. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 24 points and Josh Giddey had 20 points. Chet Holmgren collected an 18-point double-double.

Meanwhile, the Nets — who’ve lost eight of their last 10 games — shot a lowly 38% from the field and went an even worse 12-of-46 (26.1%) from 3. The jump-shooting-happy team shot 46 of their 100 attempts from outside.

“We were a little flat early and then amped it up pretty good,” Daigneault said on their defense. “A lot of switching. We downsized and were able to switch them and it stopped their drive and kick.”

Despite a significant advantage in volume, Brooklyn only went 20-of-31 (64.5%) from the free-throw line. OKC was 16-of-20 (80%) from the charity stripe.

The duo of Mikal Bridges and Cam Thomas led the Nets as their sole 20-point scores. Bridges had 22 points on 8-of-20 shooting and Thomas had 20 points on 7-of-18 shooting.

The duo got off to a hot start, combining for 25 points in the first quarter. After that though, OKC did an excellent job at limiting both scorers the rest of the way with 17 total points.

As mentioned, this win also marks OKC’s 16th consecutive New Year’s Eve home game. The Thunder continues to add chapters to its Dec. 31 contests.

It was a mundane win outside of an early scare, but the Thunder continue to take care of business against the bottom of the barrel in the league. Wins continue to pile up for OKC as it enters the 2024 calendar year with a 22-9 record.

Let’s look at Thunder player grades.

Twitter reacts to Vikings fans turning on Brian Flores’ defense

Fans have reacted strongly to the Vikings poor performance on defense against the Green Bay Packers

Pretty much everything that could go wrong for the Minnesota Vikings has in the Sunday Night Football matchup against the Green Bay Packers. With their playoff lives on the line, the Vikings have come out and laid an egg on both offense and defense, and Vikings fans on Twitter have seen enough.

Through three quarters against the Packers, the Minnesota defense has given up 30 points, including 23 points in the first half — their worst performance all season.

The defense has been the strong point for the Vikings all season, but it has faltered in a big way in the biggest spot, and the fans on Twitter have not been shy about voicing their displeasure.
