BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN: Stat leaders from Alabama’s Week 5 win against Mississippi State

Breaking down the stats leaders from Alabama’s Week 5 win over Mississippi State.

Alabama did not have much trouble on Saturday night against Mississippi State. The Crimson Tide defeated the Bulldogs 40-17.

Overall, Alabama performed at a high level on both sides of the ball for the entire tonight. On defense, Alabama was without its starting WILL linebacker and signal-caller, Deontae Lawson.

Altogether, it was an impressive performance from the linebacker core as well as the rest of the defense. On offense, Alabama seemed to click on all cylinders. Quarterback Jalen Milroe was efficient and the supporting cast was very impactful for the Crimson Tide in Week 5.

Big Ten power rankings after Week 5: A new No. 1 again?

Is the conference pecking order more clear after this week?

It wasn’t an incredible slate in the Big Ten, but it was an entertaining one.

Michigan football had its first road game of the season, one Urban Meyer envisioned would be a difficult one. It wasn’t.

Penn State thought it would have a breeze of a game at Northwestern. Despite the lopsided score, it also wasn’t.

Michigan State fired its coach officially, and yet nearly came up with the upset victory in Iowa. However, the Hawkeyes prevailed thanks to — you guessed it — defense and special teams.

Maryland rolled Indiana. Purdue surprised Illinois with a blowout. Minnesota held on in nonconference play, and Rutgers destroyed a Football Championship Subdivision team. Ohio State and Wisconsin were off this week.

Here are our latest Big Ten power rankings.

Vikings elevate WR from practice squad

The Vikings have elevated a wide receiver each of the last two weeks

Ahead of Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, the Minnesota Vikings elevated N’Keal Harry from the practice squad.

Before last week’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Vikings placed wide receiver Jalen Nailor on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. He has been battling a hamstring injury since the first week of training camp.

Harry signed with the Vikings shortly after the first time Nailor injured the hamstring in training camp. He didn’t make final cuts but signed on the practice squad shortly after.

Last week, the Vikings elevated Trishton Jackson from the practice squad to be the fifth wide receiver and play on special teams.

This is Harry’s first elevation of the season. He has two more elevations before having to be placed on the active roster.

How social media reacted to Notre Dame-Duke: Blue Devils side

Heartbreaking night in Durham.

It looked like Duke was going to pull off the upset of Notre Dame in the final minute. But one long [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag] first-down run and one [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag] touchdown run later, the Blue Devils found themselves behind, 21-14.

Already faced with a long shot of scoring a touchdown after starting their final possession deep in their own territory, the Blue Devils’ chances were snuffed out. Riley Leonard was strip-sacked by [autotag]Howard Cross[/autotag], and [autotag]Marist Liufau[/autotag] recovered the fumble. The raucous crowd that had been in Durham all day was silenced.

More concerning was that Leonard injured his leg on the strip-sack and came off the field without putting any weight on the leg. Hartman even left his ABC postgame interview to check on him. The injury undoubtedly was one of many things on Blue Devils fans’ minds as they wondered what could have been.

Here are some of the reactions to the game by Blue Devils fans on social media:

Alabama knocks off Mississippi State in first conference road game of the season

Alabama defeated Mississippi State on Saturday night by a final score of 40-17. The Crimson Tide have now beaten Mississippi State in each of their last 16 contests.

Alabama knocked off one school from the Magnolia State last weekend after knocking off the No. 15-ranked Ole Miss Rebels. In Week 5, the Crimson Tide cruised to a 40-17 victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Alabama has now won in 16 straight contests against the Bulldogs.

Offensively, the Crimson Tide were led by quarterback Jalen Milroe. The sophomore signal-caller finished the game 10-of-12 passing for 164 yards. He also had 11 carries for 69 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense, the Crimson Tide forced three turnovers. In an interesting series of events, edge rusher Chris Braswell reeled in an interception for a pick-six. It was the first of Braswell’s college career.

In Week 6, Alabama will travel to College Station to take on the Texas A&M Aggies. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 EST / 2:30 CST.

Five takeaways from the Iowa Hawkeyes’ gutsy win over Michigan State

It wasn’t pretty and it wasn’t easy to watch, but it was an Iowa win. And a very gutsy one that tested the Hawkeyes. Takeaways from the win.

If there ever existed a game to show the world how the Iowa Hawkeyes win football games, tonight is your example. After an unfortunate injury to starting quarterback Cade McNamara, the Hawkeyes went to backup quarterback Deacon Hill against the Michigan State Spartans.

Iowa displayed a masterclass in winning the field position battle, playing elite-level defense, and relying on their always reliable special teams unit. While there were plenty of good things and a win is a win, this game did not come without its’ fair share of items that need fixing.

Iowa’s wide receivers and offensive line play were well below an acceptable level tonight and it nearly cost Iowa the game. While the boo birds came out in Kinnick over some playcalling, the offense was a bit handcuffed with their backup thrown into the fire on primetime. More time is needed before we pass judgment on that.

Nonetheless, the Hawkeyes found a way to win courtesy of Cooper DeJean coming to the rescue with his punt return touchdown that will go down in Iowa lore.

Here are five takeaways from the Hawkeyes’ gutsy win over Michigan State to move to 4-1 on the year.

Urban Meyer embarrasses himself again re: Michigan football

What a clown. #GoBlue

“I believe Ohio State will stop the run.”

“‘We all agree Penn State will shut down — or slow down — the Wolverine run game.”

Is Urban Meyer ever right about anything when it comes to Michigan football?

Meyer, the former Ohio State head coach who’s now an analyst on Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff,” was at it again on Saturday, this time believing something particularly incredible: Nebraska (2-2) was poised to give the Wolverines a game.

One 45-7 final score later, Meyer was embarrassed yet again.

In case you missed it, while Meyer didn’t call for an upset, he predicted it would be a closer-than-expected contest and noted the maize and blue wouldn’t just walk away with the game — literally the exact opposite of what happened.

Let the hate flow through you, Urban. Let it flow through you.

Notre Dame-Duke: Reaction to Sam Hartman’s incredible run

A run for the ages!!!

Notre Dame was dead to rites Saturday night.

After a 4-0 start the Irish were seconds away from falling for the second week in a row.

Forget College Football Playoff dreams, the New Year’s Six was one play away from being taken out of the picture.

4th and 16 at the Duke 47-yard line with just 51 seconds to play and Sam Hartman delivered a run that will go down in Fighting Irish history.

To me it wasn’t the same stage obviously, but it brought back memories of John Elway in Super Bowl 32.

Hartman made it 17-yards and kept the Irish alive.  Here is how the college football world reacted to the incredible run below.
