2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

Analyzing the golf odds to win the 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational, with PGA Tour picks, predictions and best bets.

Heading into Sunday at last weekend’s Honda Classic, it looked like Daniel Berger was going to run away with the victory. But he stumbled in the final round and Sepp Straka swooped in for his first PGA Tour win at PGA National.

This week the stars are out for the second leg of the Florida swing as Bay Hill in Orlando hosts the Arnold Palmer Invitational, one of the marquee non-majors on the PGA Tour schedule. Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau won’t be in the field after withdrawing Monday with a hand injury. Below, we look at the 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

World No. 1 Jon Rahm comes in with the best odds to win at Bay Hill. He’s also No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, maintaining his status as the world’s best player. But he’ll face some stiff competition from Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Scottie Scheffler, Sungjae Im and others.

After clawing their way through the Bear Trap at PGA National, players will face the challenge of Bay Hill. It’s a par 72 and plays to 7,466 yards, one of the longer courses on the schedule. Like PGA National, there’s water on many holes, requiring accuracy off the tee and to the greens. The thick rough will punish anyone with wayward tee shots.

Rory McIlroy (+1200)

Based on his track record at Bay Hill, there’s no bigger horse in the field this week than McIlroy: T10, T5, T6, 1st, T4, T27, T11 in seven career appearances. He’s not necessarily playing his best right now, but he tied for 10th two weeks ago at The Genesis Invitational and finished third in the Dubai Desert Classic on the European Tour at the end of January.

At a course where ball-striking is so critical, it’s hard not to love McIlroy this week. He’s first in SG: Tee-to-Green in his last 24 rounds at Bay Hill, according to DraftKings.

That’s good enough for me.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout (+6000)

A third-round 75 did Bezuidenhout in at The Honda Classic, his worst round of the week by four shots. He bounced back with a final-round 66 to finish T25, his fourth top-25 finish this season.

In two starts at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Bezuidenhout finished seventh last year and tied for 18th in 2020.

A steady player who’s been in contention a few times this season, I like Bezuidenhout at +6000 to potentially make a run.

2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational picks – Long shot

Troy Merritt (+10000)

Long shots are long shots for a reason, right? Merritt missed the cut at The Genesis Invitational and tied for 38th the week before at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, but he also has four top-25 finishes this season, including a tie for 4th at Pebble Beach.

With an emphasis on ball-striking this week, Merritt looks like a solid pick, ranking 41st in SG: Tee-to-Green this season and 40th in SG: Off-the-Tee. He tied for third at Bay Hill in 2016 and was T24 in 2020.

Providence at Villanova odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Providence at Villanova odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets in a Big East battle.

The No. 8 Providence Friars (24-3, 14-2 Big East) visit the Pavilion Tuesday to take on the No. 11 Villanova Wildcats (21-7, 14-4). Tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET (FS1). Below, we look at the Providence vs. Villanova odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Providence is coming off a huge 21-point win (72-51) over Creighton Saturday. The Friars have won 3 straight games since losing at home to Villanova 89-84 Feb. 15. They’ve only lost to Virginia, ‘Nova and Marquette.

Providence is 16-11 against the spread (ATS), 3-2 ATS against ranked opponents and is a conference-best 6-2 ATS on the road.

Villanova is 7-5 ATS at home, only behind DePaul (12-5) in the Big East. The Wildcats are 14-13-1 ATS overall and 6-4-1 ATS against ranked opponents.

They are led by fifth-year senior G Collin Gillespie’s 16.6 points per game this season.

Providence at Villanova odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Villanova 68, Providence 64

Money line

PASS.

At +380, Providence has good value. The Friars are 7-1 straight up on the road, but having been inconsistent offensively at times this season, I can’t fully get behind them.

Taking the points below has value though.

Against the spread

BET PROVIDENCE +9.5 (-105).

The Friars have gotten quite a bit of flak this season for winning close games and not putting it on weaker opponents, but they have a mere three losses. As mentioned, one of the losses was to the Wildcats by just 5 points.

The three times the Friars were underdogs by 5 or more points this season, they not only covered, but they went 3-0 straight up (SU). Those 3 times were at UConn, at Xavier and at Wisconsin. Providence is 5-0 SU/ATS as a road underdog.

In the season’s first meeting between these rivals, ‘Nova shot 50.9% from the field and 47.8% from deep (11-for-23), while Providence shot 48.4% and 21.7% from deep (5-for-23). If those averages return to normal, Providence wins the game.

The Friars have shown few weaknesses and have been able to hang with close teams. I’d take them to cover in this position.

Over/Under

LEAN to the UNDER 134.5 (-107).

Villanova made it rain the first time these teams met. Assuming that doesn’t happen again, there should be fewer points as both teams rank outside the top 200 in possessions per game.

Villanova sits 334th out of 358 programs in possessions per game. Basically, the Wildcats play an ultra-slow pace. The Friars don’t pick up the pace much either, ranking just 224th.

Villanova averages 66.4 possessions per game, while Providence averages 69.4. The Wildcats defense ranks 61st in opponents’ field-goal percentage, while the Friars rank 49th.

The ‘Cats are 14-14 O/U this season; the Friars are 14-13 O/U.

Rookie Report: Jonathan Kuminga’s double-figure scoring streak comes to end vs. Mavs

On Sunday against the Mavericks, Warriors rookie Jonathan Kuminga’s stretch of nine consecutive games with double-figures in scoring came to an end.

Heading into Sunday’s contest against the Dallas Mavericks, Jonathan Kuminga was riding one of the best scoring stretches of his rookie campaign. The No. 7 overall pick from the 2021 NBA draft notched nine consecutive games with double-figures in scoring.

During his impressive run, Kuminga was averaging 15.4 points on 58.8% shooting from the floor and 33.3% shooting from long distance in 26.5 minutes per game.

However, similar to the rest of the Warriors rotation, Kuminga struggled to find the bottom of the net against the Mavericks on Sunday night at Chase Center.

In 17 minutes off the bench in Golden State’s loss to Dallas, Kuminga tallied nine points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field with four boards and two steals. The G League Ignite product was in foul trouble for most of the contest, recording five fouls against the Mavericks. After scoring five points in the third quarter, Kuminga failed to register a bucket for the rest of the game. The 19-year-old led the Warriors with four turnovers —his second-highest mark of the season.

Via @NBCSWarriors on Twitter:

With Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala all missing time, the Warriors will need Kuminga to bounce back at the start of their upcoming four-game road swing.

Injury Report: Warriors’ Klay Thompson (general illness) out vs. Timberwolves on Tuesday

Warriors guard Klay Thompson will miss his second consecutive game on Tuesday against the Timberwolves due to a general illness.

The Golden State Warriors will open their four-game road swing without a starter in the backcourt on Thursday against the Minnesota Timberwolves. For the second consecutive game, Klay Thompson has been ruled out for the Warriors due to a general illness.

Thompson was ruled out with the same illness during the Warriors’ loss on Sunday against the Dallas Mavericks at San Francisco’s Chase Center.

Via @anthonyVslater on Twitter:

Steve Kerr is ruling Thompson as “day-to-day” with his illness. Kerr told reporters Thompson could join the Warriors on the road in Dallas for their contest on Thursday.

Without Thompson, Kerr opted to start Moses Moody in the backcourt against the Mavericks. The rookie played 25 minutes, scoring five points on 2-of-6 shooting from the field with five rebounds.

Jordan Poole came off the bench against the Mavs, tallying only four points on 0-of-7 shooting from the field with six boards and an assist in 19 minutes. Sunday’s contest was the first game this season Poole didn’t record a field goal.

The Warriors are slated to meet Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves on Tuesday at 5 p.m. PT at the Target Center.
