Chris Paul began online class at HBCU on the same day playoffs began

While Chris Paul was battling James Harden on the court, he was also tackling his online courseload at Winston-Salem State.

As LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers prepare to square off against Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat in the 2020 NBA Finals, it’s easy to forget that, not too long ago, the NBA season was in jeopardy.

Thanks in part to the efforts of NBPA President Chris Paul, we’re here. He’s received positive press for how he pulled double duty in performing for the Thunder and leading the NBA’s players through their protests of the death of George Floyd and the shooting of Jacob Blake.

Apparently, though, unbeknownst to the masses, the “Point God” was wearing another hat at the same time: college student.

During his time in the bubble, Paul made headlines by wearing clothing items that paid homage to different historically black colleges in the South. Paul would eventually reveal that he enrolled at Winston-Salem State. What we didn’t know until Paul joined Russell Wilson on his DangerTalk podcast, however, is that Paul began his college course at Winston-Salem State on the same day as Game 1 against the Houston Rockets.

Paul explained (at the 21:30 mark):

Yea, so It’s crazy, so I’m born and raised in Winston… So for me, even though I went to Wake Forest and I went for two years, everybody in my family went to HBCUs. So, for me, obviously I’ve been championing HBCUs for a while now, and nobody even knew, my first day of class for the semester was the first day of the playoffs. My first day of class of the class that I’m in right now, was my first game of the playoffs.

Paul spent about an hour with Russell, so their conversation was rather wide-ranging. At about the 21-minute mark of the podcast, however, Wilson asked Paul about his educational pursuit.

“You’re going back to Winston-Salem State, right?” Russell asked.

Little did he know that Paul had long begun his course load.

He continued to tell a funny story about some interactions that he had with his classmates, which all took place during the postseason.

It’s funny, cus everybody on your class, they see your name, and one of the assignments, our teacher said we had to comment on what she had put in as the assignment and we had to reply to two other people in our class. So, of course, I replied to people in my class and next thing I know, I look at my inbox and people are like “Are you Chris Paul? Are you really…?”

It turns out he was.

From all accounts, it does not appear that Paul is pursuing a degree, but rather trying to promote HBCUs, encourage people to vote in the presidential election and further educate himself. Bravo on all accounts.

And in case you’re inclined to wonder whether Paul’s educational pursuit had any adverse effect on his performance in the playoffs, it’s probably a losing argument. Paul averaged 21.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game on 49% shooting from the field. He admirably led the Thunder to and through a seven-game playoff series with the Houston Rockets and put forth such an inspiring effort that there are likely to be a few teams making offers to the Thunder for his services.

One year ago, that didn’t seem likely.

Despite his season ending earlier than he would have liked, somehow, Chris Paul is still inspiring. It’s unclear when the podcast was recorded, but it was released on Wednesday. As of the time it was recorded, the course had not yet ended.

Still, we’re willing to bet that CP3 — just like he’s done elsewhere — aced it.

After going 1-1 in the opening weekend of the season on the road, the Irish begin a four-game homestand that will occur over the next few weeks. Thursday’s match will be the second nationally televised game for the Irish, as the game will air on the ACC Network.

KNOW THE OPPONENT: BOSTON COLLEGE EAGLES

  • The Irish will renew acquaintances with a conference foe that they have not faced since 2015 in Boston College.
  • The Irish own a 12-1-1 record all time against the Eagles and in their most recent game against Boston College, Notre Dame came away with a 2-0 win at Alumni Stadium on Oct. 11, 2015.
  • The two goals from the Irish came from twin sisters Taylor and Kaitlin Klawunder for Notre Dame’s 10th win of the season.
  • Notre Dame holds a 7-0 record at home against Boston College and four of those games ended in a shutout for the Irish.

  • It was also the biggest conference win since the Irish have joined the ACC in 2013.
  • It is the largest margin of victory in a conference game since 2012 when they were in the BIG EAST and defeated Cincinnati 7-0 on Sept. 16.
  • The six goals marked the most scored in a road game since 2008 when the Irish defeated Cincinnati 6-0 on Sept. 28.

HATS ALL AROUND FOR VAN ZANTEN

  • The Buffalo Grove, Ill. native came off the bench and scored three goals for her first career hat trick in the 6-0 win.
  • Van Zanten scored all three goals in just 34 minutes of game action for the second straight hat trick for the Irish against Miami after Sammi Fisher tallied one last season against the Hurricanes.
  • It is the 70th hat trick of all-time for the Irish and she is the youngest player to record a hat trick since Cari Roccaro in her sophomore year in 2013 against No. 21 Maryland.

IRISH RETURN TO FRIENDLY CONFINES OF ALUMNI STADIUM

  • The Irish return home to Alumni Stadium for the next four games of the 2020 season where they had a lot of success in 2019.

  • Eight of the 10 shutouts for the Irish came at home last season, including the first three home games of the season.
  • The Irish clinched a berth in the ACC Championship with a 3-2 2OT win at home in the regular season finale against Wake Forest.
  • In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Kiki Van Zanten’s goal in the first half secured the 1-0 win to advance in the tournament for the 23rd time in program history.

Oklahoma still the favorite to win Big 12 despite loss to Kansas State, per BetMGM

A loss isn’t enough to drop Oklahoma out of the driver’s seat of the Big 12 Championship in 2020. Well, at least according to oddsmakers.

A loss isn’t enough to drop Oklahoma out of the driver’s seat of the Big 12 Championship in 2020. Well, at least according to oddsmakers.

The Sooners have won five-straight Big 12 Championships and should be expected to win their sixth-straight until they are counted out. Oklahoma suffered an unexpected loss in its Big 12 opener in a 38-35 loss to Kansas State.

But Lincoln Riley and the Sooners have lost at least once since he arrived in 2015. This isn’t uncharted waters, but it is a lot sooner than Oklahoma typically loses. That, though, hasn’t changed the odds. The Sooners are -105 and the favorites still, with Texas closing the gap as +130 chances to win the Big 12 according to BetMGM.

Odds courtesy of BetMGM Sportsbook.

The Longhorns won a wild one in their Big 12 opener against Texas Tech on the road, pulling out an overtime win after being down 15 points with about three minutes left in the game. Texas is 2-0 after also beating UTEP.

Oklahoma State has the third best odds (+800) and are also 2-0 to start 2020. Iowa State is fourth (+1600) and the Cyclones are 1-1.

Oklahoma goes on the road this week and are seven-point favorites against Iowa State. The game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. CT in Ames, Iowa.

One of the top Big Ten LB’s decides not to opt back in

A top Big Ten LB will head to the NFL

Despite a number of top Big Ten studs deciding to opt back in to a 2020 season that will now begin in October, a Penn State star has gone the opposite route.

Nittany Lions LB Micah Parsons will not be opting back in to the 2020 season, and will prepare for the 2021 NFL draft. Parsons originally made the decision on Aug. 6, and has spent a significant amount of time away from the program. The time spent away over the past few months made this situation, “a little bit more complicated,” according to Penn State coach James Franklin.

Parsons had an incredible two-year run at Penn State, culminating in a 2019 year where he was the Big Ten linebacker of the year and recorded 109 tackles in 12 games.

He was also named Cotton Bowl MVP after Penn State’s win over Memphis. This is a massive loss for the Nittany Lions in a year where they look to contend for a Big Ten East title.

Vikings Week 4 injury report: Wednesday practice report estimate

See the Minnesota Vikings’ Week 4 injury report so far!

The Vikings didn’t practice Wednesday, so the injury report is an estimate conducted by the team.

However, it’s still important to look at, considering how much it affects Minnesota’s defensive back group.

Cornerback Cameron Dantzler is listed as limited in practice due to a rib injury on the report. He hasn’t played since Week 1, so him being listed as limited is a good sign. Dantzler started the first game, so having him back on the field might help the defensive back corps.

Cornerbacks Mike Hughes and Kris Boyd were both given the did not practice designation. Hughes has a neck injury, and for Boyd, it’s his hamstring.

The Vikings are not playing a great Texans team, but a strong suit for Houston is quarterback Deshaun Watson. The Vikings new-look secondary will have to improve in order to shut down the Texans offense. It would help to have Dantzler, Hughes and Boyd in order to do so.

2020 Finals is producing the most repeated matchups in 50 years

With the Heat and Lakers facing off in the NBA Finals, LeBron James and Andre Iguodala will meet yet again with a title on the line.

After the Los Angeles Lakers’ Game 5 victory over the Denver Nuggets and the Miami Heat’s Game 6 win over the Boston Celtics, the 2020 NBA Finals are now set: Lakers-Heat for the first time ever, in a series that will be filled with fascinating storylines and elite players going at it.

One of the more underrated storylines coming up involves LeBron James and Andre Iguodala, two players with Finals MVP on their resumes who have a ton of history in the postseason.

As members of the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers, James and Iguodala faced off in the Finals four straight years, from 2015 through 2018, with Golden State coming out on top in three of those showdowns.

Now, as members of the Heat and Lakers, James and Iguodala will face off for a record fifth time in the NBA Finals, making them the duo to face off in the league’s championship series most frequently (five times) out of any in NBA history since the merger in 1976.

What’s more, if JR Smith gets minutes in the upcoming championship series, he’ll join LeBron and Iguodala in the history books, as that would mean Smith and Iguodala would have also played each other in a record five Finals.

However, considering Smith didn’t see the floor in the last four games of the Western Conference Finals, it’s not a lock he’ll play against Miami.

In second place for that record, LeBron, Smith and Tristan Thompson have faced Stephen CurryKlay ThompsonDraymond Green and Shaun Livingston four times each in the Finals.

And in third place, a bunch of Lakers – like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Michael Cooper, Kurt Rambis, Byron Scott and James Worthy – matched up with a bunch of Celtics – Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Dennis Johnson, Robert Parrish and Danny Ainge – three times in the Finals.

Tied with them are LeBron vs. the San Antonio Spurs and Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili as well as James Jones vs. Curry, Thompson, Green, Iguodala and Livingston.

Overall, the record for most Finals matchups between two players actually belongs to Bill Russell and Sam Jones vs Elgin Baylor, who faced off seven times in the late ’50s and throughout the ’60s. Russell came out on top every single time.

There were far fewer teams in the NBA back then, however, and the talent wasn’t anywhere near the level it’s at today, so Iguodala and James’ feat is more impressive.

Report: LaMelo Ball withdraws from remainder of 2020 NBA Draft combine

After taking part in the interview sessions with both the league and the media this week, LaMelo Ball has withdrawn from the draft combine.

After taking part in the interview portions of the 2020 NBA Draft Combine, LaMelo Ball has withdrawn from the remainder of the combine, as reported by Sports Illustrated’s Jeremy Woo. The move comes after Ball took part in a media interview on Monday, a rarity, but before he could speak to any teams.

Ball had an eventful interview session with the media on Monday. Taking place in an empty weight room, the most notable comment saw LaMelo distance himself from his father LaVar, stating he had his own opinions separate from LaVar. Specifically, LaMelo’s comments were about his father saying he would not be a good fit with the Warriors.

Ball also fielded multiple questions about which teams he has and hasn’t spoken to. After a string of denials of speaking to a number of specific teams, Ball did acknowledge that he spoke with the New York Knicks, which does fly in the face of Woo’s report, though, that could be the only team Ball spoke with.

North Carolina State at Pittsburgh odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s North Carolina State Wolfpack at Pittsburgh Panthers sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and best bets.

The North Carolina State Wolfpack (1-1) and Pittsburgh Panthers (3-0) tangle at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, for a 12 p.m. ET kickoff Saturday. Below, we analyze the NC State-Pittsburgh college football betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

The Panthers are the No. 25 team in the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

NC State at Pittsburgh: Betting odds and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 6:10 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Pittsburgh -625 (bet $625 to win $100) | North Carolina State +450 (bet $100 to win $450)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Pittsburgh -14 (-110) | North Carolina State +14 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 47.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

NC State at Pittsburgh: Three things to know

  1. Defense hasn’t been a hallmark of the Wolfpack through two games, as NC State has coughed up 43.5 points per game, good for 67th in the country while failing to post a takeaway. Of course, the good news is they haven’t turned the ball over on offense, either.
  2. Pitt has posted a 3-0 SU record while going 1-1-1 ATS after a push last week in a 23-20 win against Louisville. The defense for the Panthers has been sound, as they’re second in the nation in total yards (177.0), rushing yards (56.0) and takeaways (six). They’re also third against the pass (121.0 yards) and seventh with 10.0 PPG allowed.
  3. The Wolfpack is just 5-15-1 ATS in their past 21 vs. ACC and 3-12-1 ATS in the previous 16 on the road. Of course, the Panthers are 8-20-1 ATS in the past 29 as a home favorite, and 0-3-1 ATS in the past four conference battles.

North Carolina State at Pittsburgh: Odds, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Pittsburgh 38, NC State 20

Money line (ML)

Backing the favorite Pittsburgh (-625) will cost you more than six times your potential return. That’s a hard pass for me, as I won’t play a money line over -180 under any circumstances unless I am tossing a game into a six-team parlay or more. And even then, my limit in that situation is -275 to -300 tops. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

PITTSBURGH -14 (-110) covered against FCS Austin Peay in the opener, 55-0, but that didn’t really tell us much about the Panthers. The first two ACC games against Syracuse, a 21-10, and especially the 23-20 win over Louisville really showed the D is for real. If the Panthers handled Cardinals QB Micale Cunningham and WR Tutu Atwell last weekend, they’ll be able to shut down the inconsistent Wolfpack.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 47.5 (-110) is the best play in this game. I’ve mentioned Pitt’s sturdy defense ad nauseum above, but on the flip side, NC State’s defensive showings in the first two games are ridiculously poor. QB Kenny Pickett will be able to pick them apart, and we’ll see Pitt’s best offensive performance since the opener against the FCS Governors.

LeBron James buys new Beverly Hills estate for $36 million per report

LeBron James and his family appear to be moving on from Brentwood and into Beverly Hills, per a new report from TMZ.

The James Estate has a nice ring to it. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James hasn’t been home in L.A. for over three months now since leaving with his team for the NBA Bubble at Disney World. However, whenever he does get home, “home,” will mean something different and probably something a little bit better.

TMZ reported on Wednesday, just a few hours before the NBA Finals, that James has officially closed on a new home in Beverly Hills that was previously owned by the creator of the soap opera “The Young and The Restless,” Lee Phillip Bell, for a price of $36 million. The Real Deal, which reports on L.A. Real Estate, reported that the previously listed price on the home was $39 million when initially reporting his interest on the Beverly Hills estate. It’s pretty fitting that the star of the “Real Lakers of Los Angeles” is taking over the home of a soap opera legend.

James has been busy leading the Los Angeles Lakers to the NBA Finals over the past few months, but whenever he does return to L.A., he will have an upgrade with his new digs.

Oklahoma is only a touchdown favorite on the road at Iowa State, per BetMGM

Oklahoma is in a peculiar place, but not one it isn’t used to. After a loss to Kansas State, OU is a touchdown favorite at Iowa State.

Oklahoma is in a peculiar place, but not one it isn’t used to.

The Sooners first loss of 2020 is the earliest Oklahoma has lost a game in a season since 2016 when Houston and Ohio State handed the Sooners losses in two of the first three games. Oklahoma was upset for the second-straight year by Kansas State last Saturday in a shocking 38-35 loss.

Lincoln Riley and Oklahoma have suffered losses in each season since his arrival to the Sooners in 2015, but have prevailed. They’ll be looking to do the same this week on the road at Iowa State.

The Cyclones are 1-1 after suffering a loss to Louisiana in their first game and then bouncing back in their Big 12 opener against TCU in a 37-34 win. Iowa State will be a home underdog on Saturday, but it won’t be by much—Oklahoma is a seven-point favorite according to BetMGM.

Odds courtesy of BetMGM Sportsbook.

The Sooners have been this low of favorites in a game before, but it was a good while back. The last time was Nov. 23, 2018, on the road at West Virginia. Oklahoma closed as a three-point favorite and won 59-56.

Before that? Oklahoma was a seven-point favorite in 2018 OU-Texas part I when it lost 48-45. The Sooners were also a seven-point favorite in the 2017 Big 12 Championship game against TCU and a six-point favorite in the regular season game that year against TCU. Oklahoma was a two-point favorite against Auburn in 2016.

In the last 30 games of being a seven-point or fewer favorite, which dates back to 2008, Oklahoma is 20-10 in those games and are 17-12-1 against the spread. Since Lincoln Riley arrived in 2015, the Sooners have played in 11 such games. OU is 9-2 in those games and 8-2-1 against the spread.

Oklahoma beat Iowa State in 2019 on a game-winning interception on a two-point conversion on one of the last plays of the game to escape 42-21.

The Sooners and Cyclones kickoff at 6:30 p.m. CT in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday.
