CBS CFB analyst predicts Alabama to go 12-0 in regular season in 2020

CBS Sports analyst Barrett Sallee decided to go ahead and break down the SEC for 2020, and share how he sees each team doing this fall

Everyone is hoping that the college football season will not be cancelled like so many other sporting events in 2020 due to the coronavirus. The NCAA cancelled all spring sports, ended winter sports early, and many professional sports such as MLB, NHL, and NBA are in standstill as well since the coronavirus has taken the world by storm. But college football fans all over the country are hoping that the 2020 football season will not be affected.

At this point, there’s no certainty on what will happen this fall, but as of right now, the hope, planning, and desire for college football is there. And CBS Sports analyst Barrett Sallee decided to go ahead and break down the SEC for 2020, and share how he sees each team doing this fall.

Before we break down the entire SEC, let’s start with the Alabama Crimson Tide who is looking to showcase an epic comeback after finishing the 2019 season 11-2 after beating Michigan 35-16 in the Citrus Bowl. But Alabama started the 2019 season with strong hopes and potential to win it all. Led by juniors Tua Tagovailoa, Jerry Jeudy, and Henry Ruggs III, Alabama was the easy favorite, until they weren’t. Tua Tagovailoa’s season ending injury last November was the nail in the coffin for the Tide’s hopes of winning a national championship. But Alabama QB Mac Jones is looking to prove he’s the guy for the job, and with him returns RB Najee Harris, wide receivers DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle.

Here’s how Sallee sees Alabama doing this fall:

“The season sets up well for the Crimson Tide to make a run back to the College Football Playoff. Sure, there are several roster spots to replace. But the opener against a reeling USC program and a Week 3 home game against a Georgia team with plenty of roster shakeup itself sets up well for the Tide to gain plenty of experience heading into the thick of the season. They get a bye week before traveling to LSU — a team that just lost 14 players in the NFL Draft — and have home games against Texas A&M and Auburn to close out the regular season. In an SEC that is loaded with question marks, a schedule with tough games at home is crucial. Alabama has one.”

Simply put, Alabama could be even better this season than last year.

But Sallee broke down the entire SEC, so let’s go over his SEC East standings first:

SEC EAST:

  1. Florida (11-1, 7-1) their only regular season loss? To Tennessee.
  2. Georgia (10-2, 6-2) losses to both Florida and Alabama
  3. Tennessee ( 9-3, 6-2)  losses to Oklahoma, Alabama and Georgia
  4.  Missouri (7-5, 3-5) losses to South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi State, and Florida
  5. South Carolina (6-6, 3-5) losses to Florida, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Georgia, LSU, and Clemson
  6. Kentucky (6-6, 2-6) losses to Florida, South Carolina, Auburn, Missouri, Tennessee, and Georgia
  7. Vanderbilt (3-9, 0-8) losses to Missouri, Kansas State, Georgia, Ole Miss,  Kentucky, South Carolina, Florida, Texas A&M, and Tennessee

SEC WEST

  1. Alabama (12-0, 8-0)
  2. Auburn (10-2, 6-2) losses to Alabama and Georgia
  3. LSU (9-3, 5-3) losses to Alabama, Auburn, and Florida
  4. Texas A&M (9-3, 5-3) losses to Alabama, Auburn and LSU
  5. Ole Miss (6-6, 3-5) losses to Baylor, Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Florida, and Texas A&M
  6. Mississippi State (5-7, 2-6) losses to NC State, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Kentucky, and Ole Miss
  7. Arkansas (3-9, 0-8) losses to Notre Dame, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Missouri

Could we really see an Alabama vs, Florida SEC Championship matchup? It would be the first time Saban has faced the Gators under Dan Mullen in Atlanta.

That would be incredible to watch. So let’s keep hoping there is college football this year.

Replay of 2014 Sugar Bowl between Oklahoma, Alabama to be aired Saturday

Oklahoma football has provided its fans something to do during the final weekend of the stay-at-home orders across many states.

Oklahoma football has provided its fans something to do during the final weekend of the stay-at-home orders across many states.

The Sooners have played replays of the alumni games of the teams from the 1950s and 60s, the 2000 national championship game and most, if not all of the OU-Texas wins since 1999. There have been plenty of memorable games since, but Oklahoma has gotten around to one of the most memorable and impactful wins in program history.

On Saturday at 6:00 CT, a replay of the 2014 Sugar Bowl between Oklahoma and Alabama will take place on SoonerSports.tv, which is free through the end of May.

Trevor Knight threw, Eric Striker sacked and the 2013 Oklahoma football team found a way against Alabama in New Orleans. It kept the Sooners amongst relevancy from average years in 2011 and 2012 in relative terms to Oklahoma football. The Sugar Bowl win was also the catalyst to the new renovations to Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium which bowled in the south end zone and became much more fan friendly.

Oklahoma would go on and have one of the three less than 10-win seasons since 2000 in 2014. Trevor Knight went from Heisman hopeful to backup to Baker Mayfield. Offensive coordinator Josh Heupel and wide receivers coach Jay Norvell would eventually be fired and paved the way for Lincoln Riley and Dennis Simmons to come to Norman, Oklahoma.

LaVar Ball says LaMelo’s deal for Illawarra Hawks ‘is not dead’

Despite a lack of news in recent weeks, LaVar Ball insists LaMelo’s potential deal for the Illawarra Hawks is not dead.

After a flurry of news and reports in the first weekend of the franchise being up for sale, everything has gone quiet around the Illawarra Hawks, the NBL and LaMelo Ball’s consortium. But that delay is not due in part to Ball and his camp. In an interview with AAP’s Peter Mitchell, LaVar Ball talked about the status of the sale of the franchise.

Ball’s father, LaVar Ball, said on Thursday the 18-year-old is “ready, willing and able” to purchase the team.

“We are just waiting to see what they (NBL) say,” LaVar told AAP on Thursday.

Initially, it appeared LaMelo and his consortium had quickly swooped in and bought the franchise days after the NBL took control of the team. But Jermaine Jackson, LaMelo’s manager, jumped the gun on the news as the NBL was still fielding offers.

LaVar noted in the interview that the current COVID-19 situation has delayed matters with regards to the purchase of the team and reiterated the deal is not dead. While the current situation has slowed matters, though, it also means there is no rush from either side on the situation as well.

Oklahoma LB target Danny Stutsman says he will announce commitment next week

Is the first week of May finally the start of OU’s recruiting momentum? Linebacker target Danny Stutsman to announce commitment next week.

Is the first week of May finally the start of Oklahoma football’s recruiting momentum?

The Sooners were able to land rangy defensive back Jordan Mukes from the 2021 recruiting class in early April. They haven’t had a commitment since despite a lot of teasing by Oklahoma coaches and recruits on Twitter over the last month.

That could be changing as three-star linebacker Danny Stutsman will be announcing his commitment next week, he posted on Twitter on Thursday.

Stutsman, a Winter Garden, Florida, native, was offered by Oklahoma on March 2. He is listed as a three-star on Rivals and 247 Sports, but has garnered attention from the likes of Utah, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech since the start of his junior season in 2019.

The 6-foot-3, 215 pound linebacker released a top-6 on April 21 of Minnesota, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State, West Virginia and Oklahoma.

The Sooners currently have four commitments in the 2021 recruiting class. Two reside on the defensive side of the ball and the other two on offense. Another major target, wide receiver Christian Leary, has a commitment date coming in June.

UNLV Will Officially Be Playing Games At Sam Boyd

Rebels to split home games.

Raiders really do own the stadium

Being a tenant of a stadium instead of owning comes with a lot of pitfalls and UNLV football is going through issues right now. There have been reports about some of their home games will be pushed back to Sam Boyd Stadium and now that is official.

The Rebels will be back at Sam Boyd Stadium on Sept. 5 to play Louisiana Tech and there is a chance that the Sept. 12 game against Arizona State could be back at the old home, yet details on the Sun Devils game is not yet finalized.

https://www.facebook.com/ESPNLasVegas/videos/577180883153589/

The Raiders have every right to do this as they own the stadium and they know they can fill a concert or event at Allegiant Stadium and will draw more than what the Rebels will bring in.

The lure of the Raiders to Las Vegas was to boost UNLV football which really could use one and gain some traction or long term success in Sin City. Going back and forth between Sam Boyd and a shiny new NFL stadium has to be tough on the team and new head coach Marcus Arroyo.

Playing in an amazing stadium was a way for UNLV to attract a better opponent in non-conference play but if there is a possibility of playing at Sam Boyd, opposing teams will be hesitant to sign a deal to play at UNLV.

The only cure for this is to win and fill up the stadium and outperform what other events could potentially be held over Rebels football. Outside of that, there is nothing the Rebels can do because it is in the contract that the Raiders can do as they wish its own stadium.

However, an argument can be made that since there is so much public funding toward the stadium that UNLV football should be able to play six or seven times in Allegiant Stadium.

The Rebels just need to take on the mantra of the Raiders: “Just win baby!”

UFC’s COVID-19 pandemic safety protocol: Jacksonville fighters receive company’s plan

The UFC has implemented a protocol for fighters competing on the three upcoming cards in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 9, 13, and 16.

The UFC has implemented a protocol for fighters competing on the three upcoming cards in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 9, 13 and 16.

The trifecta of events, starting with UFC 249, will mark the first time the promotion has held an event since March 14. Since then, all events have either been postponed or canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

In an email sent to the participating fighters and their teams on Thursday, the UFC detailed what should be expected during fight week – from fighters’ arrival on the premises until fight night.

Staff, fighters, cornermen only

The UFC notified fighters only designated UFC staff members, on-card fighters and their licensed cornermen will be allowed on site.

Mandatory daily medicals and testing

Upon arrival at the host hotel, the fighters and their cornermen must take part in mandatory medical screenings and a series of tests. This process will be repeated daily as long as the fighters and teams remain at the hotel. Further testing details will be provided in person upon arrival.

Weigh-in procedure run-through, credential distribution

Teams will then be informed of the weigh-in procedure and given credentials that are required to be worn at all times on the hotel premises.

Individual workout rooms

Each fighter will be provided with an individual workout room. Mats, mat sanitizer and a personal sauna will be provided.

Hotel staff will be on the premises

The host hotel’s housekeeping staff will be on the premises taking extra precautions to sanitize rooms and provide 24/7 room service.

The UFC Performance Institute will provide support, as needed

The UFC Performance Institute will be providing nutritional and Trifecta culinary support for all of the athletes.

Medical staff will be on the premises

“Performance-related matters,” defined as injury or illness, can be treated by the onsite medical staff, but massages and flushes will not be.

Why Matt LaFleur was a big winner of Packers draft

The biggest winner of the Packers draft? Coach Matt LaFleur. Here’s why.

No one individual should feel better about the Green Bay Packers’ draft than coach Matt LaFleur.

The second-year coach not only got specific players fitting his vision of the offense, but he should have rare job security and an opportunity to build his Packers legacy along the same path as Mike Holmgren and Mike McCarthy.

First, it’s clear LaFleur’s fingerprints are all over this draft class. Running back A.J. Dillon looks and moves just like Derrick Henry, the Titans star who nearly powered LaFleur’s offense to the playoffs in 2018. Tight end Josiah Deguara is headed for a role resembling what Kyle Juszczyk does for Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco. GM Brian Gutekunst was clear that Dillon and Deguara were picks made from the top of the draft board, but it’d be foolish to think their individual fits in LaFleur’s offense – a run-centered scheme based in deception and playaction – didn’t influence their selections in some material way. LaFleur clearly has full control over the vision of the offense. It has shifted his way in a major way this offseason.

The first round brought LaFleur an incredible piece of job security. Jordan Love is a long-term developmental quarterback. In the current setup in Green Bay, he’ll get at least one or two years to sit behind Aaron Rodgers and learn, providing LaFleur with a talented but raw player to groom at the game’s most important position.

LaFleur gets the best of both worlds. Rodgers gives him a chance to win now. Love provides a long-term future. Even if the Packers have to transition to Love sooner rather than later, LaFleur is going to get a real chance to work with his hand-picked quarterback. The Packers are as patient a franchise as there is in football. Love’s arrival has probably bought LaFleur – now fresh off a 13-win season – at least four more years in Green Bay, assuming Rodgers plays at least another two years and LaFleur gets at least two years to work with Love as the starter. Four years is an eternity for a head coach in the NFL.

A young quarterback to groom and strong job security provides LaFleur with an awesome opportunity to join a rare group of coaches in Green Bay. In the early 1990s, Holmgren developed Brett Favre into a multi-year MVP and a Super Bowl winner. After Favre left, McCarthy turned Rodgers into a multi-year MVP and a Super Bowl winner.

LaFleur could win a Super Bowl with Rodgers and forever cement his legacy in Titletown. He could also help pull the winning lottery ticket for the third time in 30 years and turn Love into the next great Packers quarterback. LaFleur’s history developing the quarterback is strong. Stops in Washington, Atlanta and Los Angeles all show clear development of a young, talented quarterback. The former college quarterback will be under great pressure to develop Love, but if he does, and Love keeps the Packers competitive for another 10-15 years, LaFleur will be revered. All coaches crave that opportunity. LaFleur has it. Now, he must make the most of it.

The flipside to all of this: LaFleur’s offense could bomb, driving Rodgers out of town, and Love could flop, sealing LaFleur’s fate. That’s the worst case scenario.

The guess here is that’s not how LaFleur is seeing it. He’s likely viewing the 2020 draft as a major win for his short-term and long-term viability as the head coach of the Packers. His offense is gaining vital pieces. He’s about to enter Year 2 with a future Hall of Fame quarterback. And now he has a talented player to groom at his favorite position and a major piece of the future.

LaFleur is in an incredible spot, with a chance both move his offense forward and win now, while developing Love over several years – not just months – in the relative comfort of rare NFL job security. He remains under pressure, but he’s the big winner of the Packers draft.
