Team Area and Coaching Box
In an effort to promote social distancing, the area designated for the team will be extended 20 yards. From the 15-yard line on either side rather than the 25-yard line. Teams will be encouraged to spread out and not congregate around the area nearest the line of scrimmage. Coaches will be encouraged to stay in the coaches box.
Pregame Toss
Previously four team captains were allowed to meet at midfield for the pregame coin toss. Due to COVID-19 that will be limited to just one team captain from each team, the referee and the umpire.
Uniform Attachment / Medical Mask
Cloth medical masks will now be allowed and attached to the facemask below the eye shield/visor. Any players wearing the mask must be of same color, design and bear no insignias. However, they can have the team logo.
Playing Rules Changes Related to Commemorative/Memorial Uniform Patches
- As authorized by the institution or conference, allow a commemorative/memorial patch (e.g., names, mascots, nicknames, logos, and marks intended to celebrate or memorialize persons, events, or other causes).
- The patch must not exceed 2¼-square inches and must be placed on the front or sleeve of the uniform and may not interfere with any required markings.
- While not all team members are required to wear the patch, the patch must be identical for those who choose to wear the patch.
- As authorized by the institution or conference, allow other names/words intended to celebrate or memorialize persons, events, or other causes on the back of the jersey/uniform where the player name is traditionally located. The names/words may vary by team member.
2020 Officiating Protocols

- All officials will be tested weekly in accordance of conference guidelines.
- Officials must conduct their Friday night film sessions and pregame meetings virtually. Even if they are in the same hotel.
