It has been some time since we have seen Derek Stingley Jr suit up and take the field for the LSU Tigers.
Not since the game against the Central Michigan Chippewas. In that very game back on Sept. 18, Stingley registered four tackles and forced a fumble. Despite dealing with injuries all throughout camp and most of the 2021 campaign, could he still be the first cornerback off the board?
The latest mock draft from Luke Easterling of Draft Wire predicts precisely that scenario.
No. 4 Overall: New York Jets
What Draft Wire Says…
As a former defensive coordinator, Robert Saleh can’t be loving the performance his defense has given him in his first year as the Jets’ head coach. They need help across the board, and their best bet in this scenario is to take the top cornerback in this year’s class.
Without question, the New York Jets need a lot of help on both sides of the ball. The team and head coach Robert Saleh have two selections in the top five according to the latest draft order. The team could and should use one of those selections on LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.
Defensively the team is giving up close to 31 points per game, which is dead last in the NFL. On top of having the worst scoring defense in the NFL, you can add the worst total defense as they give up 396.8 yards per game. The Jets also lack the ability to create interceptions. While the argument can be made that Stingley hasn’t intercepted a pass since 2019, how can he help?
The former five-star recruit hasn’t exactly been healthy but perhaps a new venue and an NFL staff and nutrition would help him stay healthy on gameday. They also have a bottom-five defense in passing yards allowed and bottom 10 in passing touchdowns given up.
Derek Stingley Jr and the New York Jets seem like the perfect marriage in 2022.
