The Seattle Seahawks were responsible for one of the more surprising picks of the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Shockwaves were sent through the nation when they announced the selection of Texas Tech linebacker Jordyn Brooks with the 27th pick.
The selection was met with mostly negative reviews, but we’re here to tell you why the Seahawks should be excited about Brooks.
Brooks was the heart and soul of the Red Raiders defense throughout his time in Scarlet and Black. He leaves Texas Tech for the pros after posting a ridiculous 360 tackles in four seasons, including 32 tackles for a loss. It’s tough to find that sort of production.
What allowed Brooks to make so many plays for Texas Tech? Turn the tape on and it’s easy to see why he was so productive. Brooks is a super active linebacker that reads the game at an incredibly high level. He’s extremely physical, and his wrap-up tackling ability is uncanny for a collegiate prospect. He understands how to read his keys, showing the patience and instincts necessary to fire downhill towards his target at the opportune moment.
While Brooks was a solid player all throughout his college career, he really took a big step forward in 2019, showing the kind of maturity you hope to see out of a prospect in his senior season. The Seahawks are banking on him to continue his upward projection at the next level.
The Seahawks defense isn’t currently as feared as it once was, and they’re hoping that the selection of Brooks will help get them back on track.
