The Detroit Lions have selected Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Sewell is a well-built offensive tackle prospect who brings a nasty edge to his game. Powerful at the point of attack and thick in his anchor, he excels against power rushes and has the strength needed to overwhelm edge rushers upon contact.
He has the grip strength needed to seal off defenders in the ground game, and he’s also athletic enough to explode coming out of his stance and take precise angles in his pass sets.
Detroit decided to retool this offseason, letting Kenny Golladay walk in free agency and trading Matthew Stafford to the Rams. As they look to rejuvenate their roster with youth, getting a blue-chip offensive tackle like Sewell should help them out in the long run, perhaps even more so than taking a wide receiver in the first round.
