Each morning Longhorns Wire shares the top stories from around the Big 12 Conference. Here are today’s top articles provided by 247Sports and Arizona Sports.
Why the Big 12 is struggling in New Year’s Six era
OU Insider of 247Sports discussed why the conference is struggling in the major bowl games. The Longhorns are the only team to have won a New Year’s Six game as of late.
Simply put, it’s the worst record among the Football Bowl Subdivision’s largest leagues. Inside those numbers is another issue: the idea that re-instituting the Big 12 Championship Game in 2017 would help the conference place more teams in the New Year’s Six. Well, that hasn’t happened either. In fact, the conference’s record is 1-4 in New Year’s Six games, including 0-3 in the playoff, since the conference title game returned from a seven-year hiatus. Of course, Oklahoma is the only Big 12 team to reach the playoff with an 0-4 record in the new era, but a 3-3 record in non-playoff games in the New Year’s Six hasn’t changed the landscape for the better, either.

In 2018, Kliff Kingsbury predicted Patrick Mahomes’ record contract
According to ArizonaSports.com, former Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury predicted the huge contract that his former quarterback signed.
Joining an April 2018 episode of the ThomaHawk podcast, the then-Texas Tech head coach made a bold call: Kingsbury said Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who to that point had thrown 35 passes in the NFL, would become the highest-paid pro football player ever.
“His arm talent is as good as, I mean, the best I’ve ever seen as far as just being able to throw from different platforms, different angles, off-balance so I think the sky’s the limit,” Kingsbury said.
