Texas surpassed expectations in their season opener against UTEP.
Offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich couldn’t have had a better debut. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger looked crisp and poised, therefore Yurcich was able to spread the ball around at ease to numerous different receivers.
If that’s just a glimpse of the type of play calls and uptempo offense that Texas will deploy this season, imagine what it could look like against quality conference opponents.
On the defensive side of the ball, there weren’t any glaring weaknesses or mistakes under new coordinator Chris Ash. Joseph Ossai carried the momentum over from last season and led the team in tackles. Defensive backs Chris Adimora and Josh Thompson each flashed promising potential, while several young faces were able to receive playing time.
In summary, it was an impressive showing against lesser competition considering the limited offseason work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For several months, these players were preparing for the upcoming season in their own hometowns, not knowing when — or if — they’d be able to step onto a field this year.
Their hard work and discipline was awarded after a 59-3 dominating win over UTEP. On Thursday, Texas’ social media department released a hype video and highlight reel of the players and coaches return to the football field.

After watching this video, there’s no denying what playing football meant to this team. It’s bigger than a game, it’s a brotherhood of teammates working towards one common goal.
While their blood, sweat and tears paid off in Week 1, Texas must find a way to be consistent throughout conference play in order to reach their first stepping stone — the Big 12 Championship.
