Many believe Texas has already found Sam Ehlinger’s successor.
Hudson Card took a very similar path to Texas. Ehlinger and Card were both homegrown Austin standouts that were highly sought-after recruits coming out of high school. Card was also an early enrollee at Texas, hoping to participate in spring workouts to get a jumpstart on the competition and solidify a role moving forward.
Ehlinger enters his senior season as a Heisman Trophy candidate, hoping to groom Card into become the starting quarterback in 2021. Although it won’t be an easy role to obtain due to four-star prospects Ja’Quinden Jackson and Jalen Milroe making their way to the forty acres the next two years, it seems to be Card’s job to lose.
A video of card working through quarterback drills surfaced on Twitter recently that demonstrated good size, footwork, and accuracy.

The video caught the attention of Ehlinger, who clearly has high hopes for his potential successors future. Card was a four-star prospect out of Lake Travis and the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the nation according to 247 Sports composite. He received offers from Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan, Oregon, and many other well-respected programs.
Before enrolling at Texas on January 21, Card participated in the Elite 11 and the Under Armour All-America game.
Ehlinger’s successor will have big shoes to fill, but it’s clear the Longhorns will have the personnel to do it.
