Watch: Mike Brey responds to chants calling for firing

Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey had a rough Wednesday night as the student body chanted to fire him as the Irish exited the court.

In the 21 years Mike Brey has led the Notre Dame basketball program it’s tough to find a more difficult night than Wednesday was for the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame dropped yet another ACC contest, this one an 8-69 decision to NC State as the Irish now sit just 9-14 overall and 6-11 in ACC play.

As the clock wound down and the teams exited the floor Wednesday night, Notre Dame students who were allowed to attend their first game this season were none too pleased with the result.

Brey handled it with class, accepting all of the blame and not running from the issue.

Does the program need a hard reset, or does Brey deserve another year?

2020 saw Notre Dame very much on the bubble when college athletics were shutdown and no NCAA Tournament was held.

It’s hard for me to sit and call for Brey’s job considering all he’s done for a basketball program that flailed in the wind, missing the NCAA Tournament ten-straight seasons before his arrival for the 2000-01 season.

The Irish haven’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2017 after making the tournament in nine of the previous 11 seasons under Brey.

Strange circumstances certainly don’t appear to have helped anything in Brey or Notre Dame’s case this winter and are worth noting, but at the very least this conversation has grown into something most Notre Dame fan’s never would have expected to ever dream of just a few short years ago.
