WATCH: Haskell Garrett’s mom gets memorable phone call

This had to be one special phone call to receive as a parent.

A mom is always proud of her son, but when there are some really cool things to make that heart flutter, it’s even more special.

We’ve been sharing the various phone calls to the Ohio State football captains’ parents breaking the news of their captaincy, and the latest is a special one. Haskell Garrett almost didn’t play last year. Heck, he almost lost his life when he was shot in the face after breaking up a skirmish between a man and woman near campus during the offseason last year.

Not only did Garrett come back and end up starting on the defensive line, but he had a breakout year as an All-American. After the season ended, he then decided to put off dreams of NFL grandeur and come back to be a part of the Buckeye brotherhood as a super senior taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fact that he was voted one of six captains by the team is even more special, and he and assistant coach Larry Johnson couldn’t wait to break the news to his mother.

Watch as Johnson and Garrett place a very memorable phone call to his mom, breaking the news of him forever being known as an OSU captain.

That had to be one whale of a phone call to get after all that the family has gone through. Here’s to hoping Garrett makes good on that extra year and has a special kind of year in 2021.
