Washington sets prospective date for name change, though it is still vague

Washington’s website announced that the potential name change will be coming sometime in 2022, giving us our first glimpse at a date.

For the past half of a year or so, we’ve been under the impression that the Washington Football Team would only remain the Washington Football Team for so long, and that a name change — or the declaration that the name is here to stay — is coming at some point.

Well, this week the team dropped a little bit of a hint as to when that name change might come, though it doesn’t give us much information that we didn’t already know.

On the team website, Washington declared that “the future of Washington Football arrives in 2022.” This is the first time that a date, even a year, has been given for the name change.

Of course, we always believed that the name change would come sometime within the next one to two years, which would leave it landing somewhere in 2022. Now, though, we know for sure that we won’t learn anything new about the new mascot or team name until next calendar year.

When will the announcement come in 2022, though? My guess is somewhere during the offseason, likely the spring or summer.
