Washington releases Jace Sternberger, signaling the impending return of Logan Thomas

Washington released tight end Jace Sternberger, meaning Logan Thomas should be back soon.

The Washington Football Team released tight end Jace Sternberger on Tuesday, which means Logan Thomas should be back soon.

Sternberger signed with Washington on Oct. 6, days after Thomas injured his hamstring in a Week 4 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Sternberger was never active for Washington as Ricky Seals-Jones has been Washington’s No. 1 tight end in Thomas’ absence.

Thomas expects to join Washington for practice next week when the team returns from its bye week.

This is great news for Washington.

The red-zone offense has been punchless without Thomas. It was especially bad in the loss to the Packers in Week 7. Thomas is a big target with strong hands, making him the perfect red-zone weapon. He was outstanding in the red zone last season, not only making plays but opening things up for Terry McLaurin, J.D. McKissic and others.

As a team, Washington is ranked dead last, tied with the Houston Texans, as the NFL’s worst team in the red zone. Washington averages 1.2 red-zone scores per game, per teamrankings.com.

The return of Thomas will be welcome news for quarterback Taylor Heinicke.
