How Tennessee has fared on games contested on Sept. 14

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is looking at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in the program’s history.

The Volunteers have a losing record on this date, compiling a mark of 1-2-2.

Tennessee first played on Sept. 14 in 1968. That tilt was a Southeastern Conference contest against the Georgia Bulldogs at Neyland Stadium. The game ended in a 17-17 tie.

The Vols played UCLA in 1985 at Neyland Stadium and that game also ended in a tie with the final score being 26-26.

The Bruins, coached by Terry Donahue, came to Rocky Top as the No. 10 team in the nation.

Tennessee picked up its only win on Sept. 14 in 1991 when it knocked off Donahue’s Bruins, 30-16, on Rocky Top.

That was a battle of ranked teams with the Big Orange at No. 11 and UCLA ranked No. 21.

In 2013, the Vols made a trip to Oregon and lost to the second-ranked Ducks, 59-14.

The Vols last played on Sept. 14 in 2019. They hosted Brigham Young and lost a 29-26 overtime heartbreaker. It was the first-ever meeting between two schools, rich in football traditions.
