Urban Meyer ranks SEC as best conference in college football, says this one thing separates it from the Big Ten.

Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer thinks the SEC is a better football conference, and one thing has everything to do with it.

If there’s anyone that can speak to the differences between the SEC and the Big Ten, it’s former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer. Before he spent seven seasons in Columbus, he was the head coach of the Florida Gators for six seasons. He won two national titles in Gainesville and added another on the banks of the Olentangy.

So yeah, Meyer has inside knowledge on both conferences, and what separates the two. He weighed in on that very topic during a segment on FOX’ Big Noon Kickoff, The Offseason and he ranked the SEC as a better conference than the Big Ten that he helped elevate. He says there’s one thing that’s the main separator.

“The word is attitude,” said Meyer. “When I was in the SEC, the attitude was how to dominate. When you talk about college football, it’s about recruiting and that’s all they talked about in the SEC. It’s about players, it’s about national championships, it’s about getting to the show. They didn’t care about anything else other than themselves. You kind of admire that. When I went to the Big Ten, I was kind of shocked. Everyone kind of recruited in their footprint. They didn’t step out and say national recruit and let’s talk about national championships. I was shocked by that. I think by 2014-15, the Big Ten — if not the best conference, they’re right there with the SEC. I think the Big Ten at the top can play with any team in the SEC. But top to bottom, the SEC is best, why? Attitude. They don’t apologize for being great and I have a lot of respect for that.”

The numbers and titles also prove it out. The SEC has won three of the six College Football national championships, with two teams getting it done. Clemson has two for the ACC, and Ohio State has just one for the Big Ten.

We could go on and on with all the success in big-time games for the SEC but it kind of speaks for itself. Yes, the gap has closed, and while the Buckeye program plays second fiddle to nobody, the rest of the league needs to close the gap even further.

It also wouldn’t hurt for all the monster Ohio State teams to take better advantage of some of the opportunities it has had.
