Spring practices are just wrapping up and Saturdays in the fall are still several months away, but it’s never too early to start thinking about the season ahead. The prognosticators have opinions from conference champions to a national champion and everything in between. Part of that conversation will be trying to predict who will be named the best player in college football.
Last year’s Heisman winner, Caleb Williams of USC, is returning and will be a leading candidate. But Urban Meyer thinks there will be a new name called at the Downtown Athletic Club this year … one who wears Scarlet and Gray. The former Ohio State coach said Marvin Harrison Jr. is his odds-on favorite to take home the coveted trophy.
Meyer sat down with Tim May on the “Urban’s Take” podcast and discussed a variety of different topics. When the subject of the Heisman Trophy came up, Meyer didn’t mince words about the OSU receiver.
“I think he’s the best player in college football even last year,” Meyer said. “I don’t think it’s going to be close this year. Now, it’s can we get him the ball? Can he stay healthy and still prep the way he is? I think he’s a unique individual. I think he will be the No. 1 draft pick.” Urban Meyer on Marvin Harrison Jr.

Urban not only believes Harrison can win the Heisman Trophy, he believes Marv is setting himself up to be the best receiver in college football history. May went on to ask Meyer about how good Harrison can be bringing up the name Cris Carter from when Meyer was a grad assistant at Ohio State.
“It’s still hard to say that he’s (Carter) not the greatest receiver of all time,” Meyer said. “I’ll tell you what. Marvin Harrison Jr. is knocking on the door. I think at the end of the year, he’ll be right with Cris Carter as the best to ever play in the Scarlet and Gray.”
Buckeye fans everywhere can see the special talent that Harrison possesses, but is it possible that he’s even better than we can imagine? Both Tim May who’s covered Ohio State football for 40 years and three-time national championship coach Urban Meyer seem to think so.
Assuming Harrison can stay healthy and a new starting quarterback can get him the ball, we may be in for something special this season.
