No. 2 – Sam Ehlinger and Keaontay Ingram, Texas
Coming in slightly above the Oklahoma State’s duo is Texas Sam Ehlinger and Keaontay Ingram. Like Sanders and Hubbard, this duo has dual-threat ability across the board. Ehlinger and Ingram averaged 5.0 yards per carry last season and found the endzone 14 times.
As a stand-alone quarterback, Ehlinger is the best returning player at the position. The senior is entering his third full season of being the starting quarterback, taking Texas as far as a Big 12 Championship game in 2018. In order to reach those heights once again, Ehlinger must continue to show up in the big games as he did against Oklahoma State and Utah last season but eliminate the occasional horrible game like he had against TCU.
Running back was a huge question for the Longhorns going into 2019 and for now, Keaontay Ingram has sewn up the starting role. Playing and starting in all 13 games last season, the junior finished sixth in the Big 12 in rushing yards and fourth in yards per carry (5.9). He is also a weapon out of the backfield, having 242 receiving yards and three touchdowns. All of this while sharing snaps with Roschon Johnson, Ingram’s production was crucial for Texas.
Mike Yurich is taking over as the offensive coordinator in Austin and is going to bring a new dynamic to this Longhorns’ offense. While he does love to air the ball out, Yurich has also had elite running backs who are able to pull off explosive plays in the spread offense. Ehlinger will be just fine throwing the ball over the field, while Ingram should thrive in 2020.
