Jayden Gibson and Nic Anderson and Jaquaize Pettaway, WR
All three of these young receivers made plays in Oklahoma’s opener but saw limited, if any, action in game two.
Again, the question is why?
Sure, they weren’t likely to see much activity in the passing as Oklahoma took a conservative approach. They threw the ball downfield just once in the win over SMU.
Still, did they not deserve the opportunity to see if they could make plays on the short and intermediate routes?
Oklahoma’s top four guys look set in Drake Stoops, Andrel Anthony, Gavin Freeman, and Jalil Farooq. The Sooners will need guys like Jaqauaize Pettaway, Nic Anderson, and Jayden Gibson to be factors at various points during the season. In their own ways, these three are scheme-beaters. Whether it’s Gibson and Anderson’s size and athleticism or Pettaway’s speed, they’re players who can win against whatever coverage the Sooners are facing.
They offer matchup problems for opposing defenses. If Oklahoma does opt to be more aggressive and use the passing game more, we’ll be watching to see if these guys play and if they make an impact if their number is called upon.
