On Tuesday, Auburn took on the Alabama State Hornets for their second meeting of the season. In their first matchup of the season, the Tigers came away with the win by a score of 13-7.
The scoring started early in Plainsman Park for the Tigers. In the bottom half of the first inning, a double from first baseman Sonny DiChiara brought home centerfielder Kason Howell. After one, Butch Thompson’s squad led the Hornets by a score of 1-0. Both teams went scoreless until the fourth inning.
In the top half of the fourth inning, Hornets shortstop Christian DeGuzman rolled into a double play, However, it did score designated hitter Corey King. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Auburn began to hit like the Auburn faithful were accustomed to seeing. The scoring started when right fielder Bobby Peirce hit a triple to score designated hitter Brooks Carlson. Third baseman Blake Rambusch singled through the left side to bring across both catcher Ryan Dahl and Peirce. At the end of the fifth inning, the score was 4-1.
The sixth was all Hornets. Catcher Hunter May drew a walk to bring across King. The next batter Christian Lopez walked which brought across yet another run. Center fielder Trenton Jamison was walked after Lopez. Three walks in a row led to three Hornets’ runs. As if three weren’t enough, try four walks. Left fielder Jabronski Williams drew a walk. When the sixth inning ended, it was a 5-4 in favor of Alabama State.
When the Tigers needed it, they came through. In the bottom of the ninth, Rambusch legged out an infield single with bases loaded to score Pierce. The Tigers sent it to extras tied 5-5. In the bottom half of the tenth, catcher Nate Larue hit a single to left field to bring across Carlson. In a mid-week matchup, the Tigers earned the win by a score of 6-5.
Auburn improved to 25-12 on the season. Alabama State dropped to 20-15 on the season. Pitcher Blake Burkhalter took the win adding to his impressive pitching record of 4-1. The Tigers will return to conference action on Friday in a three-game series with the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Prior to the weekend set, Auburn will take on Kennesaw State at Plainsman Park at 6 p.m. CT on Wednesday night. The game can be seen on SEC Network+.
