Three things we learned from Oklahoma’s loss to Iowa State

OU is now 0-2 in the Big 12, something that has only happened twice since 1996. Here are three things we learned from the loss to Iowa State.

Oklahoma’s defense is still Oklahoma’s defense

In Year Two of Alex Grinch as defensive coordinator, Oklahoma’s defense was supposed to take a step up and push the Sooners towards a national championship. Based on the Iowa State game alone, Grinch’s defense still has a long way to go.

To begin, Cyclone running back Breece Hall was able to average 5.0 yards per carry. He totaled out at 139 yards on 28 carries with two touchdowns and a long of 36 yards. Texas was not able to use its running backs as much as wanted against TCU and should be looking to feed Keaontay Ingram and Roschon Johnson.

Moving into pass coverage and Iowa State’s wide receivers averaged over 20 yards per reception. Quarterback Brock Purdy only had 12 completions but finished with 254 yards and a touchdown. Sam Ehlinger has faced Oklahoma four times now and knows he can have success in Dallas.
