In each of the past two seasons the Baltimore Ravens have been “one-and-one” in the postseason, and while during his rookie year the Ravens were playing on Wild Card Weekend against a very talented Los Angeles Chargers team, last year the Ravens were the top-seed in the conference and Jackson was the league MVP. Still, they were home on Championship Weekend.
Sure, Baltimore needs to get into the dance first, and that is no given with their upcoming schedule and what needs to happen for them. But the biggest thing they – and their quarterback – need is that first playoff win, to get that box checked for the future.
While it might be an obvious gift, it really is the best one. Baltimore has quite a lot of talent and while they should have done more with their opportunity last season, they might just be in a better place overall right now.
Last season, the Ravens entered the playoffs with a ton of swagger . . . Maybe a little too much, in fact. Baltimore had rarely been tested as a team, dispatching opponents left and right by pretty wide margins. And when they got into the postseason, the Tennessee Titans punched them square in the jaw and the Ravens folded.
This season, Baltimore has taken quite a few of those blows. Not only have opponents pushed the Ravens to the final seconds of a few games with tough and physical play but injuries and a COVID-19 outbreak that lasted nearly a month before they cleared their list forced the team to rise up and show far more grit than we’d seen at any point last year. They might still be really beat up and have more question marks than they did at this time last season, but Baltimore is in a good spot to claim their holiday gift . . . as long as they can earn a playoff spot to begin with.
