It was the worst nightmare for everyone — for Blake Corum, for Michigan football, and for Michigan fans — when he suffered a knee injury in Week 12 against Illinois last season. But Corum surprised by returning for his senior season, despite likely being an early-round NFL draft pick.
Now with his senior season on the horizon, how is Corum feeling? He’s rehabbed his knee all offseason, and he told 33rd Team that he’s nearly at full strength.
“I’ve been working really hard, working really hard, getting back and finally back,” Corum said. “Am I close to 100%? Heck yeah. I feel like I’m about 98. I need that last 2% that’s gonna come in camp. I still have 2% left.
“What does that last 2% consist of? It’s really just getting out there and putting the pads, putting the helmet on, feeling some contact. I’d say that’s the last 2%.”
Given what he said next, that might be a little demure.
Corum says that he’s not just feeling close to 100%, but what fans and his team can expect is to see a version of himself that’s even stronger and faster. As he says: ‘Old Blake, plus some.’ A scary proposition for opponents.
“I’m feeling stronger than ever, man,” Corum said. “I bumped up a little bit but it’s that good weight, feeling fast, faster than ever. It’s that old Blake plus some — that’s what everyone’s gonna get back. Old Blake, plus some.
“So the last 2% is gonna come through the camp. Just the feeling of putting on the pads, the way to move, things like that. But other than that, I’ve been working my butt off just trying to get back better than ever.”
Fans will get an opportunity to see Corum in action once again on Sept. 2 when the Wolverines host East Carolina for the season opener.
