There’s plenty of excitement and nerves heading into the 2020 Valero Alamo Bowl matchup between Texas and Colorado.
Perhaps the biggest storylines center around Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger and head coach Tom Herman. This could be the last time that Ehlinger suits up in the burnt orange if he decides to declare for the 2021 NFL Draft.
Many believe it’s the most likely option considering Ehlinger has accepted the Reese’s Senior Bowl invite. Herman is in a similar situation, except the fate of his future is beyond his control at this point.
The coaching rumors and speculation have been apparent throughout the season, but began to heat up after back-to-back losses to TCU and Oklahoma. Texas had the fifth-most talented roster in the country this year and weren’t able to compete for the Big 12 title.
It appears the Longhorns struck out on landing their top choice in former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, but it clearly shows the lack of confidence that the administration has in Herman’s ability to consistently compete for championships.
If Herman had as good of a track record throughout the regular season as he does in bowl games, it’d be a different story.
Texas will be without several key starters on each side of the ball against Colorado. However, the Longhorns have won their last three bowl appearances against tough competition.
